This is looking awesome! That stripe is such subtle goodness!

Loving the colour and the stripe is just brilliant

Today I got the drivers door blocked and hung in the booth for final primer. Also both front fenders are now in final primer as well. In the next week I will finish up a couple minor spots on the passenger door and get it in final primer as well. Once all are that way I will do a final block sand and then seal, base and clear all four parts. Then it will be time to finish up a couple things on the body itself and get it to final prime too.
These parts should be in color in the next few weeks, then I hope to have the shell painted in September. Things are moving along nicely now. http://i266.photobucket.com/albums/i...psyspifo3v.jpg http://i266.photobucket.com/albums/i...pshrmdysf8.jpg http://i266.photobucket.com/albums/i...psgmzsdgvp.jpg http://i266.photobucket.com/albums/i...ps0smnzpdj.jpg And finally one of my favorite small touches. I wonder, when the car is all done, how many people will even notice this and not realize its custom and not OEM?? http://i266.photobucket.com/albums/i...pso4ikwjnv.jpg |
So with all the parts painted, I am now woking on the body. I finished block sanding it and got it all masked for another round of primer. Now that I see it in all one color, I can see a couple minor things I need to tweak, but all in all I am happy with the results. Hoping to be painting the shell Labor Day weekend, but not really sure I will make that date.
http://i266.photobucket.com/albums/i...psmpta74jt.jpg http://i266.photobucket.com/albums/i...psokdfewz4.jpg http://i266.photobucket.com/albums/i...psdpm9cuot.jpg [URL=http://s266.photobucket.com/user/hotrod-1947/media/IMG_1305_zpsdxwlypn3.jpg.html]http://i266.photobucket.com/albums/i...psdxwlypn3.jpg[/URLhttp://i266.photobucket.com/albums/i...pserr9wq0t.jpg http://i266.photobucket.com/albums/i...ps2wnr6zoo.jpg |
And while I have had some spare time, I painted the valve covers as well. I like something a little more detailed than just chrome or billet, this has become a bit of a thing for me as you will see in the last picture. I have done something like this on the last few cars I have owned.
Here is the new valve cover sanded and prepped for paint, then sealed grey, then based in the darker accent blue, then masked for the stripe followed by the blue that will be on the body. Once unmasked I cleared them and ran them thru a bake cycle. After that I sanded them all down and recleared them but this time used a matte clear. After another bake cycle I reassembled the billet trim. Looking forward to putting them on the engine soon. http://i266.photobucket.com/albums/i...psr1yc6jrz.jpg http://i266.photobucket.com/albums/i...ps7wmbygpu.jpg http://i266.photobucket.com/albums/i...ps6oc6vxfy.jpg http://i266.photobucket.com/albums/i...ps6oybs2a6.jpg http://i266.photobucket.com/albums/i...psbexuexi9.jpg http://i266.photobucket.com/albums/i...pssh322erc.jpg http://i266.photobucket.com/albums/i...ps3fvznfbf.jpg |
Now in final primer I was able to put the wheels on and roll her out in the sun for a little bit of a natural bake cycle to aid in fully curing the primer. This coming weekend I will start the final sanding and prep for paint. Spraying the body over Labor Day weekend.

Awesome work and attention to detail, love the FORD script in the door shell. It looks like you switched hood's or did I miss something? Keep up the killer work !!

I am staying with the already painted CF hood. I picked up the new steel Grabber hood to see how close it would fit. Actually a real nice piece, just would take too much to gap as tight as I would expect, and already have with the other hood. |
Your painting skills have blown our minds, sir. That sparkle blue is incredible!

Ok, so it has been a very eventful week for me and my project!!
On Monday morning I loaded it up into a friends trailer and brought it to the booth. It took me 7 hours to fully mask it off. Lots of work for a car that the engine compartment and underside are already painted. Even in a down draft booth I wanted to keep the overspray at a minimum. Here is it about to go in the trailer..... http://i266.photobucket.com/albums/i...psuvtcfbxf.jpg http://i266.photobucket.com/albums/i...pstsmgf0vs.jpg And now in the booth on jack stands all masked up. A small fortune was spent on masking tape and plastic sheeting. Thank you 3M for the generous donation of products!! http://i266.photobucket.com/albums/i...pss5zwfbgy.jpg http://i266.photobucket.com/albums/i...psmmco0npp.jpg With sealer played down...... http://i266.photobucket.com/albums/i...psqe9ofdpe.jpg In basecoat..... As a reminder I am using PPG Envirobase HP waterbase system. Again, huge thanks to PPG for the donation of products. http://i266.photobucket.com/albums/i...pslsytvvsn.jpg And clear....... http://i266.photobucket.com/albums/i...psnutvqxar.jpg http://i266.photobucket.com/albums/i...psyzwz0c0p.jpg One of the very few selfies I will ever take!! http://i266.photobucket.com/albums/i...psfwcf39xs.jpg http://i266.photobucket.com/albums/i...psohfiqyue.jpg http://i266.photobucket.com/albums/i...psorjaybt5.jpg |
Funny how much darker the color looks in the booth for some reason. It really is a much brighter color than it shows here.
In any case, at this point I bagged the car and prepared it to spray the filler panel above the package tray. Grey sealer, black base and then matte clear. http://i266.photobucket.com/albums/i...pstlanbckp.jpg http://i266.photobucket.com/albums/i...psaqsr89hf.jpg http://i266.photobucket.com/albums/i...ps7a8f72rx.jpg http://i266.photobucket.com/albums/i...psvhqmo4mn.jpg after that dried I unmasked it, put the wheels back on and dropped it off of the jack stands. It was raining here today so didn't get it outside. Tomorrow is supposed to be nice, so I am bringing the truck and trailer to bring it home. Pics of it outside will come later this weekend. Love, love, love this color....... http://i266.photobucket.com/albums/i...psqvbo90no.jpg http://i266.photobucket.com/albums/i...ps15qrifrn.jpg http://i266.photobucket.com/albums/i...psnemjgbhp.jpg http://i266.photobucket.com/albums/i...pscpuaeilv.jpg http://i266.photobucket.com/albums/i...pshe759d5j.jpg http://i266.photobucket.com/albums/i...psbmfrrzif.jpg |

Love the blue, ... Congrats on all your hard work, it is paying off!

And the sun shined down and let the pearls sparkle.....................
So thrilling to see it out in the sun and be able to stand back and soak it all in. An amazing feeling after all these years in the garage. http://i266.photobucket.com/albums/i...psjclaomdf.jpg http://i266.photobucket.com/albums/i...pscyogswk8.jpg http://i266.photobucket.com/albums/i...psy6biziff.jpg http://i266.photobucket.com/albums/i...psr8ets07d.jpg http://i266.photobucket.com/albums/i...pswpyqvxft.jpg http://i266.photobucket.com/albums/i...psvdahnrbx.jpg http://i266.photobucket.com/albums/i...psjru4ukfm.jpg http://i266.photobucket.com/albums/i...psfgzxf67m.jpg |

This weekend was spent getting the interior sheetmetal prepped and black DP90 epoxied. Something I should have done a long time ago, but just kept putting it off until now. While I let it sit and fully cure, I tackled a few other things that needed to be done before I Dynamat the floors.
I started the day with figuring out where to mount to battery box and fuel vent from II Much Fabrication. I am happy with the placement. http://i266.photobucket.com/albums/i...pslckkcy7t.jpg After that was done, I drilled the holes and mounted the wire harness pass thru I am going to be using. Something a little cleaner looking than a regular grommet. http://i266.photobucket.com/albums/i...psuujukgmd.jpg http://i266.photobucket.com/albums/i...psekmqaaem.jpg http://i266.photobucket.com/albums/i...psfqowbowx.jpg Then I took care of drilling the holes and mounting the heater hose barbs. I had welded up the holes in the firewall where the factory hose would have gone. I will now be running the hoses thru the finer well and then into the cowl from the wheel side of the apron. http://i266.photobucket.com/albums/i...psbq0ca4xf.jpg http://i266.photobucket.com/albums/i...pssvunyiuu.jpg Also, mounted the Lokar shifter. I had drilled the holes for this a few years ago when the seats were in the car. Now i needed to reinstall the shifter so I can locate the console I will be running. I need to fab up mounting tabs for the console, and the shifter will locate where everything else mounts. http://i266.photobucket.com/albums/i...psydtsk2qm.jpg |
I like that billet pass through, who is that made by?
|
That battery box looks nice, but it seems the terminals sit awful close to the surrounding metal top part? We're sure that we are probably missing something in the equation.
|
Where the freak is the LIKE button.
This car is freaking awesome !!!!!! |
Very cool! Everything is great, miss the 1st rear spoiler but the car is so awesome I'll forget all about it.

So today was an incredible day for me. After all these years of working away on the car I was able to, with the help of my wife, hang all the sheet metal parts. After that I bolted the taillights, fuel filler, grille and headlight bezels on. I did all this to make sure everything still fit as I had planned. It is amazing that no matter how many times you assemble and test fit it all when in primer, the second you take it apart for paint, boom, it does'y fit right anymore.
I am happy to report that other than a couple extremely minor tweaks everything still looks great! The first, and my most cherished picture is my daughters reaction to seeing it outside when she got home from horseback riding today. I already had it outside, the kid was bouncing in her seat as they came up the driveway. It was priceless. Good thing I have a year and a half before she gets her drivers license. I get to use it for a little while before turning it over to her. http://i266.photobucket.com/albums/i...psc8ygdx4x.jpg After that, I was able to get some pictures of it when the sun was shining........ http://i266.photobucket.com/albums/i...ps1i7511sk.jpg http://i266.photobucket.com/albums/i...psmu32cnbh.jpg http://i266.photobucket.com/albums/i...psg9a5xski.jpg I put the dash back in as well as I will need it to line up the stripes when I put the car back in the booth for the hood stripes. Also, this is the console I will be using, but recovering in black. http://i266.photobucket.com/albums/i...psacqmaq6t.jpg http://i266.photobucket.com/albums/i...psigjzn2np.jpg Don't know if the plate is a better description of the car or her!! http://i266.photobucket.com/albums/i...pskf2frwtf.jpg http://i266.photobucket.com/albums/i...ps2ujsozrj.jpg http://i266.photobucket.com/albums/i...psaq4ubgtb.jpg After seeing the car outside I have decided to black out the front of the radiator support. Too much blue showing through for me. Also, the headlight bezels will get painted black. http://i266.photobucket.com/albums/i...psrclryra3.jpg |
That car is just stunning! Your daughter is seriously lucky to get a sweet ride like that for her first car!

So I finally finished a 1940 Ford side job I was doing and now I can get back to the Maverick. In between working on the 40, I did get some stuff done though. Today I spent some time on it as well.
Heading back to the booth next week for the stripes and to reclear the entire car to burry the stripes. I used to work for a local paint supply jobber store and they sold this sound deadener, so I bought a bunch of it and used it on the inside of the Mav. It works quite well. I did the entire trunk floor, interior floor and firewall as well as the roof. http://i266.photobucket.com/albums/i...psikad6bab.jpg I then installed the bracket I made to mount the wiring harness I will be using..... http://i266.photobucket.com/albums/i...ps4gq1nzej.jpg http://i266.photobucket.com/albums/i...pskw6fcbmm.jpg http://i266.photobucket.com/albums/i...psm38udnla.jpg Steering column mount and brace I had sand blasted and powder coated a couple years ago.... http://i266.photobucket.com/albums/i...psi3sjydlb.jpg Finally got to install the Ididit tilt steering column in the car for the last time. As you can see I also got the Lokar shifter mounted as well. http://i266.photobucket.com/albums/i...psdhpsnre0.jpg http://i266.photobucket.com/albums/i...psg5m8a0gp.jpg http://i266.photobucket.com/albums/i...psajrox75z.jpg Close up of the lower brace/mount I made using the factory pattern and bolt holes for mounting. Also shows the upper mount I made to mount the column to the brace. http://i266.photobucket.com/albums/i...pspyh9rdyk.jpg http://i266.photobucket.com/albums/i...pstnktv0ll.jpg A view from the engine compartment of the column sticking through the firewall, also shows the Wilwood m/c. http://i266.photobucket.com/albums/i...psu4uokdzs.jpg http://i266.photobucket.com/albums/i...psgs3crzp5.jpg |

Got the mirrors and the quarter glass frames painted last week.
http://i266.photobucket.com/albums/i...psxkqapezg.jpg http://i266.photobucket.com/albums/i...pskobmqgda.jpg http://i266.photobucket.com/albums/i...pskhmchix8.jpg Mounted the Juliano's billet steering wheel. When they made it for me I had them Hydrodip it in the wood grain. Been sitting in a box for 5 years waiting, finally got to mount it to the column!! http://i266.photobucket.com/albums/i...psee3bnpyh.jpg http://i266.photobucket.com/albums/i...psaxmdym4u.jpg Installed the polished stainless Borgeson universals and shaft. http://i266.photobucket.com/albums/i...pspiklicst.jpg Because the stripes will be going onto the dash I had to reinstall it today to make sure when I hit the booth next week everything lines up...... http://i266.photobucket.com/albums/i...psdofagag5.jpg http://i266.photobucket.com/albums/i...psnsdeqw64.jpg http://i266.photobucket.com/albums/i...psmrph4z4n.jpg http://i266.photobucket.com/albums/i...pst6mt9azm.jpg Also mounted the heater hoses that pass through the cowl. On the other side they will run in the wheel well and go into another bulkhead. Then from that bulkhead another short whip will connect them to the engine. http://i266.photobucket.com/albums/i...psdqnpy97k.jpg Today started the wet sanding to get it all smoothed out and flat to go back in the booth for stripes and flow coat of clear...... http://i266.photobucket.com/albums/i...ps7ydfu5a8.jpg The flushed side lights are installed. The lens will be masked for color, then unmasked and cleared right over to burry them in the clear. http://i266.photobucket.com/albums/i...psfhlwfmmn.jpg |
Wow! I love this build, excellent work.
