You doing the Birfields yourself? Upgrade on the shafts and joints?
Lemme know how tricky they are to rebuild. Jeff- |
Update
No Jeff, my mechanic is doing this work, I'm there every afternoon helping out where I can ... and watching and learning. Keeping shafts, these are built like tanks so we will see ... we made some good progress today

Now that’s going to be a fun ride!
|
drilling position
So looks like the engine has to go back approx. 1.5" to give us some extra space for the rad fan, and better for the intake tube as well. Guess this is the reason we pre-assemble everything ! Looks like this is the last of the clearance issues .. still have to place the front grill today and check for AC and oil cooler space

Holley
This new Holley bracket system is very nice and compact, very slick
http://i264.photobucket.com/albums/i...psg0hisfxp.jpg |
Where were the radiator and headers sourced from?
You made the engine mounts or adapted a stock mount? Jeff- |
Stuff
Hey Jeff ... hope all is well
Rad I sourced from Speedway, the motor mounts were already fabbed in the truck and we used them just as a reference point to where we want to be. I have new mounts from AA. The block headers I actually sourced from a local vendor ... stainless and I have to excellent quality The rad mounting kit I sourced for BTB Products ... had to be 'slightly' modified but will work perfectly for this application Cheers Steve |
Thanks Steve!
Watching close, trying to gather my courage for our LS swap. Ours is still in interior jail so the winter swap is looking more like a summer swap...:bang: Jeff- |
Jail
Say whaaaaat !! still at interior ... holy crap
Well buddy I can tell you that I've learned a LOT over the Padt month and can surely assist you anything/info you may need http://i264.photobucket.com/albums/i...pswwr9ax0o.jpg http://i264.photobucket.com/albums/i...psxt60kmwc.jpg |
Did you use the Holley pulley setup because you had to, or you just needed a pulley setup and theirs was compact?
I've got a '14 Camaro pullout that I planned to use as-is, thinking that arrangement would be as compact as they come.... Jeff- |
pulleys
Correct Jeff, I needed a front drive system and the Holley is a decent price and like your Camaro setup (I checked it out) is perfect for our application
Cheers Steve |
Wheels
Well its always an exciting day when you mount tires on wheels !!
These are 17x8.5 SCS wheels mounted with 35x12.5 Fallen Wildpeak M/T's Stance should be 'just right' ... LOL http://i264.photobucket.com/albums/i...psijbcpo9s.jpg http://i264.photobucket.com/albums/i...psqayt426o.jpg |

This thing is coming together fast! Very nice!
|
Going to be better than new, looking good.
|
awesome build(s)! I had an '84 FJ60 and 3 FZJ80s.
That Holley high ram probably isn't the best choice for an intake... especially below 5000rpm. http://www.hotrod.com/articles/20-ls...ifolds-tested/ Very curious to see how the Cummins 2.8 turns out. Read lots about them. |

Fully adjustable brake pedal height to suit your tastes. :happy23: |
Thanks
BIG thanks goes out to Jim and Paul that worked with me to build a new Hydroboost kit for the OEM FJ40's ...
Of course pics coming next week after I pick this up Fuel system complete - we used the fuel system from the Tanks-Inc. (pump/sending unit) and modified the top of the fuel cap to accommodate. Very easy and super clean setup http://i264.photobucket.com/albums/i...ps9uzy4oxh.jpg http://i264.photobucket.com/albums/i...psnbc7xbji.jpg Cheers Steve |
Steve,
Hydroboost is fantastic! no doubt there. Why choose that over conventional? (I ask because mine already has factory power brakes...) Jeff- |
Hydroboost
Jeff ... mmmmm
well 1st off I guess I was so pleased with the Camaro system that I basically replicated that for the FJ, big 6 piston wilwoods up front and 11's in the rear, and this one is the 'over the top' truck so it I kinda figured it needed the HB. This is the more 'pro-touring' version if thats even a thing for FJ's ... LOL Now the Diesel I have a new conventional setup with 4 wheel disc brakes Cheers Steve |
lights
Fabbed up some rear tail light housings .. well got 1 done anyway
http://i264.photobucket.com/albums/i...pskb2n40mu.jpg Stainless exhaust almost done http://i264.photobucket.com/albums/i...psdb4wna5x.jpg http://i264.photobucket.com/albums/i...pspzso4ry2.jpg http://i264.photobucket.com/albums/i...pstyctmfej.jpg http://i264.photobucket.com/albums/i...ps5q40l7oy.jpg |
Hubs
Front hubs completely disassembled and ready for powder coating
http://i264.photobucket.com/albums/i...pss30suudy.jpg http://i264.photobucket.com/albums/i...pswfxjh15c.jpg |
I like the tail lights. The Exhaust came out nice it will last a lifetime.

Wicked Custom 4 Door build (225k!) http://www.hydratechbraking.com/imag...TOM4DOORFJ.jpg http://www.hydratechbraking.com/images/TLCICONFJ.jpg http://www.hydratechbraking.com/images/TLCICONUNIT.jpg Being a previous customer on his Camaro build, Steve saw these images, and I could tell he could barely contain himself. After bouncing some images and dimensions around, all of a sudden this new OE FJ system exists (interesting that the ICON builds are different due to their own custom firewalls). We spoke with another gentleman about this system the other day that ran over a deer blazing down a trail because he couldn't stop properly (what a mess that made - yuck). He is now gathering his funds together to perform this upgrade on his FJ. Steve, what are you going to do to provide vacuum to the brake booster on your diesel build? I've got a feeling that we may be building you another system for that one. Especially with all of that diesel torque in low lock climbing around your favorite trails with lesser brakes at the wheels... The problem we have now is that we have to get with some FJ guru's to figure out what the year / model break points are for this new system we built for Steve. Of course we know it will fit a '73 FJ40 (and can do some basic part number investigation), but we now have customers inquiring about these systems and it's initially tough to say what will fit and what will not. Anybody got any feedback on this for me please? I have to admit I need a schooling on FJ's. I never thought we would be building systems for imports! I've interestingly never even sat in one before by some strange fluke. |
Brakes for the R2.8 diesel
Thanks Paul !!
I sent you a PM I will be posting pics of the system partially installed later next week so interested parties can see the system on the OE firewall Cheers Steve |

A good tech source for FJ40 info is over on the IH8MUD forum https://forum.ih8mud.com/ They have a FJ40 specific area and they've usually been pretty helpful to me. Jeff- |
Ih8mud
Jeff ... been over there for years
Here's my builds, obviously they are VERY conservative about tampering with originality LOL https://forum.ih8mud.com/threads/pro...tomod.1010734/ I've put a few guys in touch with Paul/Jim for Hydroboost info, and I know that they are getting some feedback now so we will see what comes out of all of this Steve |
tails
Spent some special 'Family Day' fun in the garage today ... :D
Very happy the way these Maxxima tail lights turned out http://i264.photobucket.com/albums/i...pscngzpglu.jpg http://i264.photobucket.com/albums/i...psbboa3f11.jpg http://i264.photobucket.com/albums/i...psflrhx9dy.jpg |
The lights look good.

OK ... put the 'Big Boy' wheels on
Nitto Trail Grappler's 35x12.5's http://i264.photobucket.com/albums/i...psmd1jis7g.jpg New MSD Airforce intake ... looks bad ass and should have much better low end torque http://i264.photobucket.com/albums/i...ps30lnuxqo.jpg |
Looking good, how much lift did you do to the truck.
