Charley,

Not sure if this has been asked or not...why did you choose to do a Riv?

clill 03-08-2018 02:12 PM

I love 65 and 66 Riv's. With all the car tours we do the bigger trunk will be great.

Oh come on..... tell the real story behind the Rivi..... LOL

And yes -- so glad on the larger trunk -- I'm going to buy some larger, more comfortable chairs now that you've got space for them.

clill 03-08-2018 05:12 PM

Apparently I told Greg the story about wrecking my buddies Dad's new boat tail Riv one night while his parent were on vacation in Europe. Luckily my brother worked at a Chevy dealership an he loaned me the money to get it repaired before they got back. Had to hang a new 1/4 panel on it.

Chairs come in handy.

Now that’s a story!

Most of us just wreck our own parents’ cars...lol

The Quality of work that Matt has put into this project is hard to comprehend !!!...........Wow!!!!!

57hemicuda 03-09-2018 10:09 AM

First time I looked at this thread, probably because Riviera was in the title. LOL This thing is awesome, I am so digging somebody thinking outside the box. Quality of work under an original car, priceless. Where everyone seems to have gone racing, nice to see a cool cruiser/street brawler being built again. Kudos Charley

The East Bay Muscle Cars amazing Riviera build thread is here...if anyone else is getting the Riv itch.

You can tell real craftsman by the way they space their tacks -- they use TIG for their metalwork..... and their precise fit up.

gofastwclass 03-11-2018 08:55 PM

When you're OCD about your tack welds... :D

The day I started using a TIG welder my MIG began collecting dust.

RS6 heritage wheels with polished outers, matte black inners (instead of gold as seen here) and polished Flush-loc converted hex cap just like this. You're welcome.

CTX-SLPR 03-15-2018 07:08 AM

Hello,

Joined just to follow this (and the referenced older Riviera builds) since I've been working on my own less dramatic '64 Riviera project. I've also been relaying the pictures to the Riviera Owners Association board. We'd like to know if you weighted the original frame and floor pans and then the replacements?

Also here's my suggestion for wheels, though the Rushforth Salt Shakers are very good looking.

https://www.budnik.com/wp-content/up...HED.png?x48858
Budnik Muroc III's though with a blacked out web vs. the matte web shown. Any of the Muroc's look a lot like the original road wheels but I think the III's have the best balance of features vs. the II or the IV.

Welcome to Lat-G !!

I certainly hope your Rivi club isn't as bad about cutting up cars as NCRS is about a guy even changing a wire....LOL

If they are - Poor Charley might receive death threats! :D

Yeah, there are some over there who really enjoy pointing out why everything in the world is wrong. There are also some very nice and helpful people as well. Overall they are very polite, making for some fun discussion.

Thanks for the welcome. See below for the thread, the welcome a guy foreboded and how Charley is handling it.

These tours are usually 1500-2000 miles. Having something with a modern drivetrain makes these tours alot more fun. The engine is the same as i have in a camaro and it makes over 900 hp and tq on 93 octane. In the camaro i get between 17-20 mpg with the ac on. The ls engines are so good it makes road trips much less stressfull. I used to always be watching gauges etc. Now they are a non issue. Yes a stock riv will cruise just fine but won't perform how i want it to. My friend mark stielow is babysitting the project. If you google him you will see he is one of the top ride and handling engineers at gm. My plan is to keep the orig. White paint and black interior. I believe the orig drivetrain will go to a friend that wants to drag his dads 63 riv out of a junkyard and get it together to give his dad a ride in it.

I do appreciate stock condition cars also. Here is my 66 Bonneville...

Looks like he's jumped into the fray... I'm also CTX-SLPR over there. Obviously it's his car and he can do what he wants with it and I for one appreciate where he's going with the build. I've got my questions on some of the choices and am VERY interested to see how he puts the interior back in with the radically different floor pan setup.

It'll be easy when it's custom fabbed and in the hands of Sled Alley....

214Chevy 03-15-2018 03:46 PM

CTX-SPLR, I don't think the guys over there know who they're dealing with. Seems like a bunch of old farts over there who think 2019 is on the verge of not coming and the rapture of GOD is upon us because Charlie cut the floor and replaced the X-frame on "his" car.

The comments over there are priceless -- and just as I had expected.... I'm sure he'll watch his gauges from now on! LOL

I stopped restoring mid year Corvettes because of this very same "attitude".... Even though I won Top Flight awards - had many of them (one 28K mile original) - had been driving them since 1970.... and if you laid a bolt on a table - I could probably identify it...... but the people that judge them - and many that own them - just really aren't "car people" -- they are brand / year specific and nothing could possibly be more blasphemous than wanting to change ANYTHING.

I thought about posting some pics of Lillards "garage" --- with a few of his cars in there -- but it wouldn't change any minds - and my guess is - they'd start posting comments about whatever it was they saw that wasn't something they liked. Frankly -- to me -- this relates to my above comment about being "car guys" -- car guys appreciate anything automotive - I personally love a 1927 Cadillac as much as I love a hot rod. If it's on wheels and has a motor -- there's something cool about "it" whatever "it" is. Sad to me when the keyboard warrior in people comes out and all they can comment on is something negative.... I always envision that person as some "shut in" barely functioning and lonely....

I thought Charley handled the situation with utmost tact. It was great to see he created an account and replied to a group of "alternate" car fans.

This is anther reason Lat-G is the best, Automotive Enthusiasts who care about others...

I feel fortunate to be here, I've learned way more than I've given!

At least he’s using the stock radio and speakers...What? He’s not? Blasphemy! I have great memories of cruising with my 3.07 gears listening to Karen Carpenter. He’s ruined that car! :D

Don’t mention the sliding ragtop or lambo doors over there, heads will explode.

:flag2::thumbsup:

ps, don’t **** up the wheel choice

clill 03-15-2018 05:17 PM

Karen Carpenter ? Get out of this thread.
