While I was working on the car I decided I needed to make a down and dirty hood prop as my hood kept falling on me.
Thank goodness for PVC pipe and a dremel. https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...cf7f437f91.jpg I wrapped it in red electrical tape so I would remember to remove it. Plus it adds a little friction as it snaps over the shock rod nicely now. https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...a8430d65a2.jpg Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |
Are the hood struts worn out or did they never work great to begin with?

2nd Chance Camaro - Let the Project Begin

I’m on my second set of shocks so I would say that we haven’t found the correct set yet. For now I’m going to wait till the car is back on the road to start experimenting again. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |
Slick idea.

I need to do a little back posting so I can actually post pictures of some of the projects we did on the car this summer.
A few things I wanted to do on this version of the build was to clean up the brake lines and to powder coat the differential. Just trying to make it look nicer but not perfect as I enjoy having a car that isn't perfect. A few of these pictures are so I remember how these go back together. Soon, I will able to use the cool brake line bracket I purchased from Chris at JCG years ago. http://garagescene.net/_data/i/uploa...f246518-me.jpg http://garagescene.net/_data/i/uploa...06b04a6-me.jpg It's important to remember how the brackets go on. http://garagescene.net/_data/i/uploa...fc0c266-me.jpg http://garagescene.net/_data/i/uploa...3fae7c9-me.jpg http://garagescene.net/_data/i/uploa...772d009-me.jpg Did I ever tell you how much I dislike the smell of gear oil http://garagescene.net/_data/i/uploa...3dc5ef0-me.jpg http://garagescene.net/_data/i/uploa...2f5d873-me.jpg Simple the best $50.00 yes $50.00 I have ever spent. Now I won't have to worry about smelling up the inside of my truck when I bring the rear axle to my buddy Ben's so he can clean up the welds for me. http://garagescene.net/_data/i/uploa...9127e09-me.jpg http://garagescene.net/_data/i/uploa...6e74fea-me.jpg Before http://garagescene.net/_data/i/uploa...9a1e734-me.jpg After http://garagescene.net/_data/i/uploa...0fe5de9-me.jpg http://garagescene.net/_data/i/uploa...25eb48d-me.jpg Ben also figured he would grind down some of the other flaws from the 70's http://garagescene.net/_data/i/uploa...5cdd50a-me.jpg Dropped at Pro-Tek Powder Coating in Joliet. Looking forward to having a nice looking rear differential. http://garagescene.net/_data/i/uploa...0b42cc5-me.jpg |
So way back on July 3rd I picked up the rear diff from Jay at Pro-Tek and I couldn't be happier with how it turned out. It's
actually way nicer then I expected and it might actually be to nice for the car. Just Kidding I love this car. http://garagescene.net/_data/i/uploa...0d3819e-me.jpg remember that $50.00 it's really starting to pay off. http://garagescene.net/_data/i/uploa...bacee8e-me.jpg http://garagescene.net/_data/i/uploa...c6c993f-me.jpg http://garagescene.net/_data/i/uploa...bde9c39-me.jpg Time to take it outside and clean it to make sure there is nothing that would hurt the differential. http://garagescene.net/_data/i/uploa...5711533-me.jpg http://garagescene.net/_data/i/uploa...3a27049-me.jpg I opted to powder the Aluminum Diff cover as I didn't want to have to worry about cleaning it. http://garagescene.net/_data/i/uploa...20eb17e-me.jpg Ask Mike why we have one bolt that doesn't match an I am certain you will here some not so nice words as we had to break an ARP bolt because we didn't put enough anti-seize on the threads and it cold welded itself to the nut. I also had to order two longer bolts as the one's that I had were a little short. http://garagescene.net/_data/i/uploa...60a75d6-me.jpg http://garagescene.net/_data/i/uploa...1498ffc-me.jpg http://garagescene.net/_data/i/uploa...1a6dc17-me.jpg |
I needed to clean up the Moser C Clip Eliminator brackets, the axle flanges and install the wheel studs before handing it
off to the guys at Village Auto & Custom for final assemble. http://garagescene.net/_data/i/uploa...cef30cb-me.jpg http://garagescene.net/_data/i/uploa...1ce0399-me.jpg http://garagescene.net/_data/i/uploa...e63c5e4-me.jpg http://garagescene.net/_data/i/uploa...4e03943-me.jpg Good Enough http://garagescene.net/_data/i/uploa...9c6ec36-me.jpg More ARP hardware http://garagescene.net/_data/i/uploa...1298f1b-me.jpg http://garagescene.net/_data/i/uploa...d81cf3a-me.jpg http://garagescene.net/_data/i/uploa...1c89ccc-me.jpg http://garagescene.net/_data/i/uploa...c92d14b-me.jpg http://garagescene.net/_data/i/uploa...c16944d-me.jpg http://garagescene.net/_data/i/uploa...f2e2351-me.jpg http://garagescene.net/_data/i/uploa...2cfed25-me.jpg |

So I dropped the rear diff off and plan to pick it up tomorrow. http://garagescene.net/_data/i/uploa...1222fdb-me.jpg http://garagescene.net/_data/i/uploa...2cbb746-me.jpg http://garagescene.net/_data/i/uploa...2b68680-me.jpg http://garagescene.net/_data/i/uploa...e0d24e3-me.jpg http://garagescene.net/_data/i/uploa...0795b7c-me.jpg http://garagescene.net/_data/i/uploa...b52283b-me.jpg http://garagescene.net/_data/i/uploa...4f899af-me.jpg That $50.00 is really paying off http://garagescene.net/_data/i/uploa...07bf602-me.jpg Did I mention it is starting to get heavy and hard to carry by myself. http://garagescene.net/_data/i/uploa...b456734-me.jpg http://garagescene.net/_data/i/uploa...8d73750-me.jpg |
Marty the rearend turned out great. Those ARP fasteners can get addicting.

So you know that problem us guys on these boards have. You know when we something really cool something happens and all of a sudden we feel like we need it even if we don't. Okay, if your not that guy I am very very happy for you and when you have time can you please sit down with me and "Help" me be more like you.
When I was at Sema 2017 I of course stopped by Ride-Tech just to say hi and to see what was new. First mistake I should have just said Hi. Darren of course showed me the new 2nd Gen Camaro stuff and I was blown away. The new stuff they offered for the 2nd Gen was way cool and there will be plenty of stuff for me to upgrade to in the future. http://garagescene.net/_data/i/uploa...ab2ea9c-me.jpg Fast forward to summer and a quick email to Darren and the new R-Joint Arms are on the way to me for my rear suspension. Yep, I am excited and can't wait. Nothing Like Christmas in the Summer http://garagescene.net/_data/i/uploa...c4e7667-me.jpg http://garagescene.net/_data/i/uploa...55e3081-me.jpg http://garagescene.net/_data/i/uploa...b8c1873-me.jpg Houston we may have a small issue here. Not to worry we are going to figure this out. Since we offset the lower spring mount it puts the arm way to close to the spring pocket. http://garagescene.net/_data/i/uploa...1bee590-me.jpg http://garagescene.net/_data/i/uploa...0b70371-me.jpg Upper Arms - No Problem Perfect Fit http://garagescene.net/_data/i/uploa...da88210-me.jpg http://garagescene.net/_data/i/uploa...c4e3ae7-me.jpg Looking at possible moving the the arms over. However, if I move the arms over I will lose the tire clearance for the 335 rear tire set up. http://garagescene.net/_data/i/uploa...24ce247-me.jpg http://garagescene.net/_data/i/uploa...9aaaee0-me.jpg http://garagescene.net/_data/i/uploa...8b8161f-me.jpg In order to use the arms as is I will have to make some billet shims. For now I just used a few washers to test the articulations to see if the arms hit the spring pocket. http://garagescene.net/_data/i/uploa...2bf2e41-me.jpg Bad news in stock location they hit and I am sure with the weight of the car they would move way more then I could get them to move on my lift. |

Okay, Since my goal was to have the rear differential back in the car by the end of the weekend it's going in today which is actually Saturday Sept 22. What I love about this set up is its simplicity. It's so darn simple and yet it works so well. http://garagescene.net/_data/i/uploa...5ae0e30-me.jpg http://garagescene.net/_data/i/uploa...8e152c1-me.jpg http://garagescene.net/_data/i/uploa...3cbe221-me.jpg Very important step...make sure you install the arms on the correct side so you can grease the them without having to take them out. http://garagescene.net/_data/i/uploa...c9b53cc-me.jpg Need to get the back of the car up high enough so I can slide it under the car since I am doing this by myself. http://garagescene.net/_data/i/uploa...475d192-me.jpg http://garagescene.net/_data/i/uploa...6cc8555-me.jpg |
Minor dilemma here i need to get the rear end from it's current location to behind the my car which is on the lift.
Reality is I have to carry this thing about 15 feet and gently set it down on my car cribs. http://garagescene.net/_data/i/uploa...f74ee2a-me.jpg Success, I guess all that working out I did when I as younger paid off. http://garagescene.net/_data/i/uploa...ea136d8-me.jpg Okay, this part sucked trying to get it on the lift while being hunched over. http://garagescene.net/_data/i/uploa...7f711b7-me.jpg Success !!! http://garagescene.net/_data/i/uploa...2b5e444-me.jpg In order to get the lower arms in I need to tip up the pinion http://garagescene.net/_data/i/uploa...c7ec9cc-me.jpg http://garagescene.net/_data/i/uploa...b1f1f47-me.jpg I moved the cribs which made the install much easier. http://garagescene.net/_data/i/uploa...5f39678-me.jpg http://garagescene.net/_data/i/uploa...6e9c61e-me.jpg http://garagescene.net/_data/i/uploa...3bc0d73-me.jpg |
Upper Arm Install should be simple right...Nope
http://garagescene.net/_data/i/uploa...335232c-me.jpg Now that the rear end is powder coated there is a little less room and because of that the upper arms will not slide in. Out comes the spreader which I have had for years and used so many time. It's perfect when you need to install a set of aftermarket lower control arms and they just won't slide in. http://garagescene.net/_data/i/uploa...75ac0ec-me.jpg http://garagescene.net/_data/i/uploa...0b2fc1b-me.jpg Finally http://garagescene.net/_data/i/uploa...febceed-me.jpg http://garagescene.net/_data/i/uploa...d2d0117-me.jpg Still not sure why I went to my hardware bin. http://garagescene.net/_data/i/uploa...ba09a0f-me.jpg I still can't believe I used all of these tools just to put the rear end in. http://garagescene.net/_data/i/uploa...111314b-me.jpg http://garagescene.net/_data/i/uploa...6c97cfe-me.jpg http://garagescene.net/_data/i/uploa...364448b-me.jpg |
Can someone tell me why I didn't put the freaking gear oil in when it was on the ground.
http://garagescene.net/_data/i/uploa...687182b-me.jpg Time to improvise http://garagescene.net/_data/i/uploa...3739220-me.jpg http://garagescene.net/_data/i/uploa...35e6d90-me.jpg Look really really close and you can see the make shift funnel. http://garagescene.net/_data/i/uploa...56ce906-me.jpg http://garagescene.net/_data/i/uploa...ca82e40-me.jpg and why does your wife call you when you arms are wrapped up around a rear end and the other one is pouring gear oil in. man does that not sound good. |
So right before Sema in 2013 Kenny had painted the BBT ground effects gloss black and we both agreed the gloss black
didn't work. So Kenny had a local vinyl shop wrap them with a carbon fiber vinyl. Fast forward to today they vinyl needs to get retired. I also need to thank the guys at Remes Autobody for painting these for me. http://garagescene.net/_data/i/uploa...987db10-me.jpg http://garagescene.net/_data/i/uploa...4072f1e-me.jpg http://garagescene.net/_data/i/uploa...f2e8e04-me.jpg http://garagescene.net/_data/i/uploa...ffa913e-me.jpg http://garagescene.net/_data/i/uploa...d0b39ec-me.jpg http://garagescene.net/_data/i/uploa...e481e3f-me.jpg http://garagescene.net/_data/i/uploa...c2669e7-me.jpg http://garagescene.net/_data/i/uploa...4f83790-me.jpg This time I went with a satin black which blends in well with the cars satin finish. http://garagescene.net/_data/i/uploa...d1d5419-me.jpg http://garagescene.net/_data/i/uploa...ae79a29-me.jpg http://garagescene.net/_data/i/uploa...db59a28-me.jpg Looks much better. http://garagescene.net/_data/i/uploa...475cfbb-me.jpg http://garagescene.net/_data/i/uploa...28bef08-me.jpg |

Need to shorten the exhaust by 1/4'' and also plan to to wrap the mufflers with the DEI Muffler Shield.
http://garagescene.net/_data/i/uploa...45bf47a-me.jpg Mike's pretty darn good making a straight cut with a Sawzall http://garagescene.net/_data/i/uploa...50094a0-me.jpg http://garagescene.net/_data/i/uploa...6c10432-me.jpg small learning curve here for both of us. http://garagescene.net/_data/i/uploa...a52bd15-me.jpg http://garagescene.net/_data/i/uploa...0aee9da-me.jpg http://garagescene.net/_data/i/uploa...6553f6c-me.jpg http://garagescene.net/_data/i/uploa...03ccd5e-me.jpg http://garagescene.net/_data/i/uploa...18dac18-me.jpg http://garagescene.net/_data/i/uploa...66180ff-me.jpg http://garagescene.net/_data/i/uploa...14acef8-me.jpg |

http://garagescene.net/_data/i/uploa...0de2379-me.jpg http://garagescene.net/_data/i/uploa...b28bda3-me.jpg Of course the inner fender is in the way. Enjoying seeing this one fleshed out MJ.

Still playing catch up from all of the work we did this summer on the car.
On Sept 30 I decided to bleed the rear brakes and since I was doing it alone I went out and bought another one man bleeder kit (I have one somewhere) so I could get it over with. I also picked up some Brembo Dot 5.1 Brake fluid which is what I use in my yellow Camaro. http://garagescene.net/_data/i/uploa...ce1d148-me.jpg First thing first need to get the kinks out of the supplied hose. http://garagescene.net/_data/i/uploa...ee408e3-me.jpg all better http://garagescene.net/_data/i/uploa...a4c88bc-me.jpg Did I tell you all how much I love this DSE Brake Booster set up. http://garagescene.net/_data/i/uploa...38020b6-me.jpg all done. http://garagescene.net/_data/i/uploa...f23537d-me.jpg Very nice kit and much better then the 10 year old one I have somewhere in my garage attic. Maybe when I clean it out next summer I will find it and donate it to someone else. http://garagescene.net/_data/i/uploa...0bf2bf0-me.jpg |
Installed new stainless steel gas tank straps with some rubber anti-squeak in between the tank and the straps.
The main goal was to reduce the noise from the fuel pump which is mounted to the front of the tank. Hard to believe how well it has worked and they look really nice. http://garagescene.net/_data/i/uploa...77f9355-me.jpg http://garagescene.net/_data/i/uploa...6bc96ae-me.jpg |
Looking very good Marty, detail is everything:thumbsup::thumbsup:

That is a highly detailed machine right there.

Next up - Install the new Ride-Tech R-Joint Upper Arms.
I can tell you that after installing just the upper arms the ride quality is significantly better and I am looking forward to actually getting out and driving the car a little harder to see what it actually can do. So back out to the Garage and it's empty this time. Just the Camaro. http://garagescene.net/_data/i/uploa...5a23a5a-me.jpg http://garagescene.net/_data/i/uploa...292b6a4-me.jpg http://garagescene.net/_data/i/uploa...3400675-me.jpg http://garagescene.net/_data/i/uploa...7aa32ee-me.jpg http://garagescene.net/_data/i/uploa...105d315-me.jpg The best part is adjusting pinion angle is super easy now. http://garagescene.net/_data/i/uploa...ee5e042-me.jpg |
Yes, I lost one of the Universal Joint Caps
No a new universal joint was not needed however I wanted to dust the driveshaft with a little paint as it got a little scuffed up in the garage and I dropped the cap somewhere between my garage and the kids swing set. http://garagescene.net/_data/i/uploa...bb9b62b-me.jpg http://garagescene.net/_data/i/uploa...e5efa07-me.jpg http://garagescene.net/_data/i/uploa...6bc262b-me.jpg http://garagescene.net/_data/i/uploa...78aa231-me.jpg http://garagescene.net/_data/i/uploa...f96dccf-me.jpg So while I was trying to install the driveshaft for some unknown reason I was unable to get one of the caps to seat and low and behold pulling the cap off I found out why. http://garagescene.net/_data/i/uploa...87595d6-me.jpg http://garagescene.net/_data/i/uploa...0c3fb8b-me.jpg |
Solving the Fuel Leak with Flaretite
I have been fighting a couple fuel line drips and I am hoping these solve the drips especially since I park the blue Cayman under the Camaro.
So I started pulling all of the lines off and I found a kink so I will have to remake this line before it goes back in. http://garagescene.net/_data/i/uploa...cd711db-me.jpg Opps http://garagescene.net/_data/i/uploa...8cd470f-me.jpg Please oh Please make the drip go away. http://garagescene.net/_data/i/uploa...5b54149-me.jpg I had Dennis over at High Speed Welding bend me up a new line. http://garagescene.net/_data/i/uploa...827ef98-me.jpg I installed the flaretite brass whatever you want to call them where ever there was a drip. http://garagescene.net/_data/i/uploa...575d864-me.jpg http://garagescene.net/_data/i/uploa...c9e36a4-me.jpg I put a piece of blue tape on the fitting as a reminder that I needed to tighten them. http://garagescene.net/_data/i/uploa...6fe3a23-me.jpg It has been a long time since I have seen these wheels and it's time to get them out of the shed. http://garagescene.net/_data/i/uploa...72fb014-me.jpg http://garagescene.net/_data/i/uploa...d04f76a-me.jpg I so wish BFG still made these tires http://garagescene.net/_data/i/uploa...d239205-me.jpg Hard to believe the wheels are back on and it's starting to look like a car again. It's been a long summer and I am happy to be working on it again. http://garagescene.net/_data/i/uploa...acde1ec-me.jpg |
I decided to wait till Mike came over to start the car plus I need to pick up some fuel from Winter Circle in Joliet
so I at least have some good quality fuel in the car over the winter. http://garagescene.net/_data/i/uploa...e3841e5-me.jpg Let's not forget to put the trans fluid back in the car. http://garagescene.net/_data/i/uploa...a2e5140-me.jpg Fire It Up - started right up which is awesome for a LS with a Carb. http://garagescene.net/_data/i/uploa...9bac5a1-me.jpg Checking for leaks http://garagescene.net/_data/i/uploa...b522d6b-me.jpg Pulled it out of the garage but I didn't get that far. http://garagescene.net/_data/i/uploa...f8aedc7-me.jpg Let's just say we didn't get that far. Yes we ran out of gas !!! http://garagescene.net/_data/i/uploa...06351cf-me.jpg |
Test Drive was fun and good news the car rode great. However, we had a minor tire rub issue which was caused
by me flipping a tailpipe hanger the incorrect direction. Simple fix however I did burn a little rubber off the sidewall. Opps http://garagescene.net/_data/i/uploa...26554d5-me.jpg Bummer I am going to have to rewrap this tailpipe. http://garagescene.net/_data/i/uploa...6a84692-me.jpg http://garagescene.net/_data/i/uploa...502c331-me.jpg The Rub http://garagescene.net/_data/i/uploa...32b1a83-me.jpg |
Prior to winter coming I wanted to have the paint protection applied and lucky me my neighbor does this in his garage shop
so a quick 30 second drive to his house and the car will be get a little paint correction on the gloss area's and the matte area's will get a Matte Ceramic coating to protect the paint. Day One. http://garagescene.net/_data/i/uploa...120eb13-me.jpg http://garagescene.net/_data/i/uploa...0904bfd-me.jpg http://garagescene.net/_data/i/uploa...cb6f7c6-me.jpg http://garagescene.net/_data/i/uploa...c4e3f0d-me.jpg Heading back to my garage for the night and I will be bringing it back tomorrow so he can coat the gloss area. http://garagescene.net/_data/i/uploa...9fd763d-me.jpg Day Two and yes it is 5am in the morning and yep I woke the neighbors and my wife. http://garagescene.net/_data/i/uploa...62bb6fe-me.jpg http://garagescene.net/_data/i/uploa...da5347c-me.jpg http://garagescene.net/_data/i/uploa...af07387-me.png http://garagescene.net/_data/i/uploa...a4a7026-me.jpg What is crazy after the paint correction the metallic is so noticeable. http://garagescene.net/_data/i/uploa...2b3507f-me.jpg |

Yes, I think wrapping the tailpipes is going to reduce the heat buy a bunch as it was pretty much hugging the gas tank. My tailpipes where Hi-Temp coated and I just wanted to go that extra mile as I am hoping to drive the car on part of Power Tour and drive to to Good-Guys Columbus next year. So I wanted a little extra protection. |
