That thing turned out amazing Greg. Very classy style to it. Nicely done

Greg, car looks great. I like the old school look with the technology of the ls powertrain. The finned front drums with a disc brake! Sweet interior, and that grille,, they build that car from the grille back. Hope you have lots of fun with it!

Thanks guys!!!

I've been really really happy with the amount of builders coming by the booth - and they make a beeline to my (Gwen's) car... they skip over all the others (8 others) in the booth... and hang around mine (Gwen's).

Troy Ladd came down and asked me if I wanted to bring it up for AMBR judging... but it doesn't qualify because it has windows.

Today a group from the GoodGuys show came by and invited me to Del Mar for Street Rod of the Year competition.

Oh yeah -- I'm grinning from ear to ear.

Best part... Steve Frisbee's booth is directly across the aisle from the car. He's getting an eyeful all day long. I love it.

That car is so beautiful! So subtle, yet so wild! You're wife is one lucky lady!

RussMurco 01-24-2014 07:21 AM

Greg, this car is a knockout and I bet Gwen will love it! I wish I were there this year to check it out but scheduling ruled that out... :shakehead:

Now that's karma!

GregWeld 01-24-2014 08:03 AM

Thanks everyone!!!

It's funny --- This car is SO SIMPLE.... yet seems to appeal to everyone. I'm not sure I understand it. I love it. But don't really understand how such a simple hot rod can attract so much attention.

My red '32 --- NOBODY stops to look at it - or even turn their head to give it a glance..... This car -- people walking down the aisle... they just come to a dead stop -- and then soak it in.... and then do the slow walk around. IDK what the attraction is exactly. I mean -- I love it -- but I designed it so I should love it.

Couldn't be any happier with the way it turned out. And the doors...... they open and close like a Rolls Royce. OMG! These Speed '33 bodies are absolutely beautifully built.

GregWeld 01-24-2014 08:06 AM

I think chopping the grill an inch and a half ---- makes it look like it's going fast just sitting there.... That part really helped with my "traditional with ATTITUDE" I was going for.

Kinda like chicks at SEMA. Just because they buy a rack and put on a ton of makeup doesn't translate to being attractive.

I personally like the cars that draw you in and keep you there looking at the little things.

Ron in SoCal 01-24-2014 08:43 AM

Looks fantastic Greg! I'm hoping to see the car and you later today

That's the magic I used to go for with my model cars. It didn't have to be a fancy model, didn't even have to be a vehicle you'd normally be drawn too. I saw a 1950 GMC Pick-up model at a show once, it was a bone-stock build, light blue paint, but holy-cow, it was mesmerizing! I think it took honors at the GSL Championship (the model version of AMBR) that year, it was that good!

As a builder you know you've done a good job when someone walks by it on the table, glances at it, you can see the clicks going off in their head, then they'd come in for a closer look and end up spending 15 minutes looking over a 6" long model car. It's those little details... Stance, that "just right" look, proportions, symmetry, a totally cohesive package, details that pull you in and that make you look for more, and you keep finding more! The best part is when, without conversation, the looker starts smiling involuntarily just looking at the car!
When you start really looking at the little things you can really separate the amateurs from the pros really quickly. It doesn't need the latest this or that, doesn't need to be the most expensive, it just needs to be built with subtle details and craftsmanship that draw you in. I hope I can pull-off that same magic with my full-size Firebird! It's hard to describe the magic but when you nail it the response is pretty satisfying. Your car has it, Greg, no doubt about it!

Your car is just beautiful. Will it ever see a good burnout?

I am of the belief that side windows are used to see where we are going...

You're letter is in the mail.

Obviously a "good burnout" is somewhat crossed-up. :unibrow:

You're letter is in the mail.

I'm awaiting it's arrival.

As the lone Moron here, did that heap win an award? I saw the group shot, but I'm a bit slow on the uptake. Spot me one, Greg, for being so dim.

Che70velle 01-25-2014 07:45 AM

Does Gwen know how to do a burnout? After all, she's piloting this beauty.

No it did not. Bruce Meyer was taking that trophy somewhere... and then they were joking about me "winning".. and I grabbed my phone and took the hasty shot.

Jeeze, I can't keep something from my wife overnight. No way I could hide this beauty for 5 months.
