I second this. We need documentation of the unadulterated awesomeness.

Vegas69 02-26-2010 11:24 PM

Thanks for the birthday wishes:cheers: I started a new thread on the ZL-1.:unibrow:

That is a great looking engine. Very clean looking. I really like the 'lack of' bling. Nice

Might be a stupid question, but what is you reasoning for going with a carburetor... versus FI?

Very nice Todd. Almost a shame to put it in the engine bay.:_paranoid

Thanks guys...

Money and I really like the look. I'd have to go to a hogan or similar intake to make me happy if it was injected. Doubt it will happen anytime soon. The drivability would be nice but I'm sick of spending money....

GregWeld 02-28-2010 04:13 PM

Todd --

With that kick-out pan - is the oil filter captured??

Vegas69 02-28-2010 04:20 PM

It's notched but tight. I'll have some photos up soon.

GregWeld 02-28-2010 04:29 PM

Take a break -- you've been going non-stop!

Have some birthday cake! You can blend it with some carrots or something...

XOXO
Greg

jr421 02-28-2010 04:41 PM

Todd-

The engine looks awsome and I really like the way it works with the all black car. The HP numbers are great too. Get that baby back together and go tear up some asphault! Us midwest guys have a few months before we can go out and tear it up enjoy!

chr2002ca 02-28-2010 04:51 PM

Happy Birthday Todd! That's a beautiful engine. And rare also. A wonderful choice in my (carbureted-big-block-biased) opinion. Mucho congratulations! :hail:

66LS7 02-28-2010 06:41 PM

Todd the motor looks awesome, nice detailing:thumbsup:

Vegas69 02-28-2010 08:53 PM

Thanks guys....I really like it alot better than round 1.

Greg, you aren't kidding. I've been going non stop since Friday at 5:45 AM. That includes two nights of beer drinking for my birthday and my buddy. :faint:

With new parts come new problems. :D (That's pretty good) I didn't have it off the truck for 10 minutes before I found problem number uno. The SFI aluminum sandwich plate wouldn't clear my crank throw and... the cam plug sticks out beyond the bellhousing mounting surface. Out comes the jig saw, it's not pretty but it's hidden. I considered having it water jetted....naaaah New engine means re dialing in the bellhousing. I found my high and low spot with the help of Kelli reading the dial indicator. It's only .010 off so new .007 dowels are on the list.

I dressed the engine not only for the photo but to work on new plumbing. I have two oil lines, oil sender, and Z bar in this area. To say it's 10 pounds of **** in a 5 pound box is an understatement. The headers are tighter than they look as well. I've got a solid gameplan together so I can still utilize the mechanical clutch and plumb it as planned. I planned to plumb the accumulator in the small plug but not going to happen. I'll have to get a one way check valve up by the radiator. The oil filter is close. Once the gaskets are in it will have 3/16-1/4. I'm going to put some insulation on each filter. The cermakrome coating really cuts down the heat. Jason seems to think it will be ok. I'm going to cut open the first filter and make sure it's not a problem.

I finally finished wiring the Vintage air, all that's left is two duct hoses to the center vent. It compromises the stock glove box quite a bit. I decided to cut a stock box and use the scraps to make a glove box. It turned out pretty decent. Good place for the Ipod.

I'll have the engine in by this time next week.

Aschle 02-28-2010 09:01 PM

Todd, that is a VERY good looking engine !!! :hail:

Jason

GregWeld 02-28-2010 09:12 PM

If it was easy -- anyone could do it...

The hole in the block plate... theres's a tool for that... :D

Payton King 03-01-2010 06:13 AM

Good work

you have been moving to get that much done and a little beer drinking too. Great time management. LOL

Check out the brake section for an update on those brake pads. PM me or email me any questions.

MarkM66 03-01-2010 07:07 AM

An AC Delco PF454 is shorter then that filter, and may give you the clearance you need.

mfain 03-01-2010 07:33 AM

Very Nice!! Did you get a chance to weigh the whole assembly?

cdushane 03-01-2010 08:27 AM

Todd, that's one SHARP looking motor

Vegas69 03-01-2010 08:59 AM

I wanted to weigh it but had no scale. Supposed to have been 500 lbs back in the day for a dressed big block ZL-1. I'd assume I'm a little heavier due to the AC compressor, larger oil pan, bigger headers... I'd guess in teh 525 lb range. Down from 675.

Thanks Mark, I was thinking about a shorter filter. Moroso also makes one that's a little shorter. We plugged the filter bypass so I need to make sure it's a good flowing filter.

Vegas69 03-05-2010 07:24 PM

I've been out in the garage for 18 of the last 24 hours. I've made some huge gains. Time for some beer and hot wings and a good nights sleep. I've cleaned up the mess completely twice. This is what I'm left with.....:_paranoid

Todd---how about a pic of it in the car bro? We don't care if you have everything hooked up or not---I wanna see all that aluminum against the black engine compartment---how long are you going to make us wait :willy:

Doug

Vegas69 03-05-2010 07:50 PM

Longer now....:D I'll have it presentable very soon.

Vegas69 03-09-2010 02:19 AM

Hey Tom, I've been burning the midnight oil quite a bit lately. Lot's of changes lead to lot's of work. It's 2 AM and I just came inside. I spent 18 hours in one day out there last week! When it's back together your welcome to take a look. Thanks for the kind words.

tomtuna1978 03-09-2010 10:05 PM

dude !!! ... thanks for the offer :) ... and hay ! if i can help ... let me know :) ive been a tech at verrious dealers here in town and can turn a wrench with the best of em :) .... let me know

Vegas69 03-11-2010 12:13 PM

I've been spending a little to much time in the garage lately. One day I spent 18 hours:_paranoid Couple nights until 3:30 or so. Anyway, this whole engine swap is about 15 times more complicated than it sounds. The new oil and cooling system certainly didn't help but I've basically reengineered most everything under the hood. From wiring harnesses underneath with heat wrap to all weather pack connectors. New clutch meant recentering the bellhousing. Minor fitment issues with the ac compressor brackets. Routing the AC and Heat hoses as cleanly as possible. Just a ton of work that won't look like much work when it's done. That's the key. My mind is so scrambled on the whole deal I'm just going to post up some photos I took. I've slacked on photos since I've been so busy out there. Once it's all done and polished up I'll take photos of all the changes and new look. It's going to be hot.
