Update 1/19

Been busy with this and that ... waiting on my SPI epoxy I started body working the trunk and the firewall (apita) and I found out the firewall closeout panel I welded on was warped and I couldn't get it straight so I cut it out and did a smaller patch.

The trunk wasn't so bad but my body work still needs refining as can be seen in the SPI black epoxy ...

So here's some pics for those that like visual aids ...

http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/102...922/8pFivN.jpg
Second time around mo better ...
http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/102...922/dcZNG9.jpg
Filling the tray here .... doing something different!
http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/102...923/tuwYtm.jpg
Getting some black w the new gun ... very little overspray!
http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/102...922/cij6mu.jpg
That'll do pig!
http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/102...923/S3qEK5.jpg
In between coats just cap the cup and clean the nozzle ... pretty cool!

And I started on the hood mods, found out I needed flexible urethane foam between the skin and the supports to replicate AMD's work so I got that today and then my 3M Accuspray gun came in and I just had to spray ... what I time saver in cleanup and the pps cups are just cool.

Thanks for looking ...

Mikael A 01-22-2017 03:24 PM

That looks great:drool: I might have to try that gun out.

jarhead 01-24-2017 06:42 AM

Nice work Chief, you are Kicking A.. and taking names!

I'm curious what the mods to the hood will be? Did I miss elsewhere in the thread?

Thanks, once you get used to the gun it shoots nice and easy clean up, that's a +++.

Thanks, I'm trying but sometimes my OCD kicks in and I have created more work for myself, lol!!

Well I thought I would be further along with the hood by now but after you spray a black epoxy the poor body work comes out in the shine and you have to keep going to get a flat reflection ....

OCD kicking in ... the black epoxy doesn't lie when it comes to a reflection, so more sanding and epoxy!

http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/102...921/SRRRVU.jpg
I think I got it this time!
http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/102...923/Fvowng.jpg
The firewall is APITA to get straight ... mulligan!
http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/102...923/qyzSBf.jpg
Got some bling in too!

Hopefully this is the last time ... paint tomorrow?

Thanks for looking ...

Sonar Chief 01-27-2017 01:28 PM

Done!

Early morning paint, check that off the list ... now it's time to cure before I can start making another mess, lol!

I have learned a great deal watching Jim do the work on my car. Seeing it in person really helped me appreciate the talent in all those hours of work.

Car is looking great. Always enjoy your thread!

Hey thanks, this bodywork is difficult, I redid the trunk 3 times and now the hood 3 times because in black epoxy it shows all the defects of my attempted body work, hopefully, it'll be the last go round!

Not much happened today, I got brushable seam sealer on the cowl and the side tulip panels ... waiting for it to cure and should spray color tomorrow. While that was drying I worked on my hood vent locations before I cut the hood.

And I used a clay bar on the truck cuz all this crap in the air, it's gonna be 67 here tomorrow, nice!

Thanks for looking ...

Thanks Mikael, it's been apita but rewarding knowing it's done correctly!!

Well they say it's all in the details ... considered this detailed!

http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/102...924/4UkD5p.jpg
Side cowl panels are ready for bonding!
http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/102...923/iYwIgj.jpg
This area will NEVER rust again!
http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/102...924/vLgMKn.jpg
And yes I had a run on the inside ... just like the factory, lol!

Now to let this cure and then bond the side cowl panels and then finish up the body and spray some black, that should be all the gray!

Thanks for looking ...

Sonar Chief 02-01-2017 09:26 PM

Good garage day!

Been a long day ... I hung the Ride tech cradle that I sprayed yesterday and finished the Millerbuilt axle installation and got the rear end hung today! Takes time when everything is painted and you are by yourself ...:confused59:

Well take a look ...

http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/102...922/byvrg6.jpg

http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/102...924/kdwR7e.jpg

http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/102...922/DGYKHS.jpg

I'll finish hanging the shocks and get the brakes mounted and test fit the front wheel ... hopefully the bs will be the same for the rear, we'll see!

Thanks for looking ...

My 1967

Looks very clean... thank you for posting up
I am thinking of doing the Ridetech system vs a
torque arm and this helps me see the clearances etc
I have my 3" exhaust running under my rear end and
with this system I would not have to modify anything

Keep at it

You still in California?? having a superbowl party at

I see you are running a Ford rear along with the RT 4 link set up. Just thought I'd pass along some info about a minor issue I ran into - the lower brackets on my rear end were off 1/2 outboard on each side. Sight along the lower trailing arm and see if it looks like it's running parallel.

This difference caused the lower coil-over eye mount to come in contact with the wheel rim.

You probably don't have that issue, but it may come in handy for some to check before getting too far along.

waynieZ 02-02-2017 01:03 PM

It looks good in there.

That may be the correct location, its not uncommon to have the rear end pickup points slightly wider than the frame pickups on the lower arms.

Tell me about it, I've spent the last 20 years building my car all by myself in a carport no less ! I'm always fascinated by those tv shows where multiple people are working on a car, much less helping each other.

Swinging in the engine, mounting doors, taking hoods on and off, not easy as a one man show. My wife/kids start complaining after even just 30 seconds of oscillating the steering wheel or pumping the brake pedal for me.

Sonar Chief 02-02-2017 03:28 PM

Yeah it's slower when everything is painted  One man show here too!

Bad news first ... won't be able to use the same wheel size in the rear, good news is I know what will work!!!

First, there is a difference of 3/16" stickout in width between passenger side and driver's side, what ?? ... measured everything again and all is square with the mounts and rear seems the passenger side quarter panel is 3/16" narrower than the driver's side (based on rear frame rails).... go figure.

Update ... it's not as bad as I stated, it's only 3mm or 3/32" difference between sides, still gonna need more bs than these fronts!
/
Second, I have plenty of clearance on the inside, 2" to top of tub and 1" to lower shock mount, so I just ordered a larger bs for the rear rims, no biggy! I would rather have plenty of clearance to the wheel lip than just enough!

For those that need visuals ...

http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/102...924/kOi8EK.jpg
Passenger side way too close to lip!
http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/102...924/UXQrh4.jpg
Plenty of clearance here ... so more BS!
http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/102...922/icgkte.jpg
1/2" to rubber!
http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/102...923/Dzbwl0.jpg
Almost 3/4" to rubber!
http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/102...924/ib6KDd.jpg
Those wheels just look cool!

I put the driver's side through compression and it would clear w a lip trim but the passenger side was a no go ... so I'll trim the lip some and have a different bs rims on the back, no biggy! Glad I did it this way instead of ASSUMING !

Thanks for looking ...

This is a known issue and only applies to a few of our members. This happens simply because you move slower though time than the rest of the world. If further proof is required, look no further than your closet. Cords, eight track tapes and VCRs are no longer in style, considered modern or even vintage for that matter.

:snapout:

Honestly this is the first I've heard of that. Is it just in this thread or in all of them?

That's too funny, might have some truth in though!

Well, you know what happens when you ASSUME ... yeah you end up pulling the whole rear end out from under the car to install the third member, grrrr. Seems the studs on the housing and the holes on the center section didn't line up and after 2hrs and lots of colorful words I had to pull it out and use the LFH to align the studs w the holes! Used gravity to install the 80+ lb center section and then more colorful words and some redneckery she's back under the car and I am going to see the chiropractor tomorrow, lol!

I hear ya!

Been doing a little of this and that ... after the rear was installed I test fitted the brakes with Jay Miller's hybrid floater kit and wanted to run calipers in the front and Jay suggested I could swap sides and that should work ... yep! Got some epoxy and paint on the hubs while I had them out, I have to do the fronts still, I hate to see rust start here!

Been raining for so long [again] but Sat was nice so I went over to Marina for the American AutoX series opener with Art, he brought his SS/RS and got 4 runs in. Mary was there with her Camaro, man she is fast and smooth!!!

So got the hood as straight as I could, OCD is a b***ch and the vents have a home now! You won't see the defects under a wrap anyhow!

I'm calling this good enough!

Passenger side ... gonna look like this!

The brake thing was bugging me cuz I know it's been done on all Mark's cars, granted he makes his own floater adapter, but I stared at pics of Mayhem and noticed the difference and off I went!!

Anyway, weather is good for now so I'm gonna finish some painting stuff and hopefully get the subframe under the car real soon!

Thanks for looking ...

Thought I'd share some pics of my rotor wash ... with zinc phosphate. I used POR15's Marine Clean first and then their Metal Prep with water rinse in between, and then a light scuff with a red scotch brite!

http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/102...922/1qJFUJ.jpg
A good scrubbing with Marine Clean!

Comes out kinda dark after the rinse ...

light scuff w scotch bright pad all better!
http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/102...924/PdqW5J.jpg
These vanes where filthy and were sure to rust ... not no more!

Figured I'd better get this done now before I bolt it together and then they start to rust, thanks for looking ....

WSSix 02-17-2017 05:58 AM

So the POR15 metal prep leaves a zinc coating on the rotors that won't rust or resists rust?

Coming along great with the car.
