Like everyone WOW.That is one of the most 'packed' 69 engine bays I think I've seen, but it looks amazing and really clean. Killer... looking forward to the road tests results.:woot:

"Can't wait to take it out tomorrow and tear some **** up..."
Congrats Todd. Excellent work. One of these days my clone will be right behind you...:) Ron |
Nice job Todd, All the hours paid off, Sounds great in vid.

Awesome!

 The .50 conical washer took me out of my race tomorrow. I called all over town and nobody has them. I'm working on getting the hood aligned to it's best spot and installing some hood pins anyway. Road test mid week.

Hey Todd,
Did you have to change your front spring rates with 150 lbs less in the front end? |

I suggest an aluminum handle for the tank ball valve, likely will need to be fabbed. Brushed aluminum would look right at home, not the yellow...:D
The car looks GREAT !!!! :hail: Jason |
X infinity
Todd,
I hate to sound unoriginal, but the car is, well, beyond any words I am able to come up with right now. I'd almost kill to see it in person. Larry |
LOL Larry, it's a nice car but I'd hate to see you sent up the river. :unibrow:
The canister is an accumulator. It holds 3 quarts of oil and is basically a cylinder with a piston. I start out by putting about 80psi of air in the gauge end and then bleed it off to 6psi. Once the engine is running it forces the piston all the way back to the gauge and if the engine loses oil pressure due to high g's the accumulator can supply up to 5 seconds of oil directly into the oil galleys. That's what the one way valve is for.(Causing my drip) I can also prime the engine by closing the valve with it running and opening it before the next start. It's probably over kill but it's to late now. |
Looks Great Todd. My hats off to you for the level of detail. I've seen a lot of cars with 10 lbs of crap stuffed in a 5lb bag and they look like it. You made it all fit very well. Brushed aluminum has always been my favorite look. I bet you never thought back in 2006 when you were planning the car out that you'd still be working on her or it would ever be at this level? You'll never really be done, but that's the fun of it all. Great Job!!
You should take those nice valve covers over to a good machine shop and have "Payback" or "ZL1" or even both engraved into them. |
Looks Fantastic!
What an ass load of work that had to be. LOL
Order up any pads for Carbotech yet? I have some miles on them now. Car has never stopped better. A little bit of noise when they are hot and a very, very light stop. I will be getting a set of their track pads soon |
Thanks guys, I did order a set last week. He recommended the AX6 out back and the 10's out front so I can mix street, autocross, and road racing. We'll see....
|
Looks great! I'm curious where you mounted the fuel regulator.
|
It's in the corner of this photo. If I had it to do over again:D it would be under the car near the passenger foot panel. I used two 180 and one 45 fitting to make it work. At the time I wanted it as close to the carb but not mounted on the inner fender. :unibrow: It works great but it wasn't fun making it work with fittings. Seems easy now......

telll me how that works
I have the AX6's on all 4 corners for street and autocross. Was going to go more aggressive for the track, but if the 10's work up front and I can leave the AX6's in the rear, that would be a quick swap.
On a seperate note, the brushed aluminum really looks great against the black. |
It's between the accumulator and and headers with heat wrap.
I'll let you know on the pads. I'm not sure I'll have the energy to put them on before my race Saturday since they won't be here until Friday and my folks will be in town. I will defiinitely have them on for the El Toro deal. |

Todd,
You mentioned racing on Saturday. Is that still the plan, if so, where? I'll be roaming around Southern Cal/Vegas this weekend and would like to see your handywork on the track. Pappy |
Hey Pappy, It will be out at the Bull Ring parking lot on Saturday from say 9-4.
|
The interior is complete and vaccumed. I'm still waiting on my conical seal. Should have it tomorrow. I bought a set of Ring Brother hood pins about a week before I pulled the old engine. The car is done minus the conical seal so I spent a bunch of time getting the hood on as square as possible. It's the best it's ever been. Drilling 1 1/4 holes through my hood and radiator support was a blast. :unibrow: I decided to install the hood pin where the bump stop is factory. I then made my own bump stops out of stainless allen head button bolts and moved themat a 45 degree angle. Turned out sweet! Last time I raced the hood popped and I don't want that happening again! Yep, that's a chip in the header panel.

The hood pins look great , that hood won't be going anywhere. I love that radiator. I'd like one for mine but I would need to put it on a loooooong lay away payment plan. lol. I hope that seal comes in for you. Its got to be killing you to not be able to drive it yet.

The car REALLY has turned out beautiful! I would love to be at El Toro to see it and all the other great machines but family must come first. And I have to ask, how many times over the years did you (if ever) screw something up before you got your fabrication skills to the point they are now? In my eyes you turn out the kind of work that comes out of the high dollar fab shops. "Where 'GOOD ENOUGH' isn't." Larry |
Larry, I'm no fabricator. I'm just decent at design, packaging, and making things work together. Parts like these Ring Bros hood pins and plates make me look great.
That chip happened with about 300 miles on the clock. It's go more than one.:D |
As usual, awesome job Todd.
(you really need to clean that car. lolllll....) |
Now I can't get the hood popping at the track thought out of my mind.... sounds BAD.
|
It just popped onto the safety catch but it didn't give me a fuzzy feeling. It happened for the first time in my best performance. More twisting and flexing the faster you go. How many race cars do you see without hood pins? ;)

The verdict is in, this mother facker is insane. I took Kelli out of town tonight and dropped her in 2nd at 2500 rpm, looked over and said are you ready? She's like yep, gunned it and it dead hooked all the way to 6700 and I can honestly say I've never accelerated that fast in anything. Planes, roller coaster rides, motorcycles, atv's,cars, anything. We both giggled like junior high kids hitting the bong for the first time. Kelli goes, "Can we do it again?" I thought this car was fast before but it's night and day. Yep, we did it again. The rear sway bar loosened the car up big time. 3rd gear at about 50-60 and 3/4 throttle in a sweeper getting on the highway and the rear end decided it wanted to help me around the corner. Loose is fast but it's a little to much for my liking on the road course. It' will be great for autocross and I'll move it u p a notch for the road course. The car feels a little more nimble now. Effortless cornering at any speed. I'm a very happy guy right now.
My conical seal fixed my leak. I've got some carb work to do. I put about 100 miles on today and reset the bowls, changed teh power valve and a couple primary squirters. The drivability isn't great. I think it's due to the stagger jetting from primary to secondary. I knew it would need some tweaking. Cruising is good and and the secondaries are great. It's the partial throttle to more load. I think it's to lean on the primary side. I"m going to throw 4 jet sizes in it tomorrow night. It's actually pulling more vaccum than the hydraulic cam did on 4 degrees less LSA. I'll get it figured out. |
That's so good to hear!! It's so much work - and so much expense - to not have it come out smokin' hot! Love it!
Re: Driveability -- could it be the pump shot is not fat enough - rather than the primary side? The speed at which it should wind up - might be too fast for the pump shot (as is) to catch up to... Just a thought. |

KILLER!!!! Sounds like a beast.
We need videos of some drive-by's and what not when you get a chance. CONGRATS!!  |
Thanks, I'm sure there will be plenty at El Toro. I'm also running an autocross Saturday.
|
Ahhhh, the day you've been waiting for.....:D Glad to hear that thing rocks!! Looking forward to seeing some video :unibrow: Congrats man
