Have fun at the Roadster Show? You probably saw my buddy Jeff who was working the Roadster gate and let you in.

We had a great time! Great hot rods. Great people. The L A Roadster club is first class. My buddy John Kiley (Pres of the club) just runs it so smoothly. I heard there were 900+ roadsters..... My son Alex came up from redondo beach and spent the weekend. He's FINALLY gaining an appreciation for fine hot rods and now wants to build a '37 to '39 Ford pick up...

I (and you, actually) know someone who has a scratch-built fully custom truck cab/body that he's looking to sell. It will be a gorgeous one once it gets finished. ;)

940 roadsters, 2100 "other" cars. My first time and a great show. We had fun cruising down in Dad's '36 coupe.

Yeah I'd heard numbers like that. Crazy!

Glad you two had fun. Sorry we missed each other! But there's always next year.

GregWeld 06-20-2014 07:34 PM

So #1 -- Gwen LOVES her new '33 regardless of what Charley says... Maybe he'd be happier if he'd just go have his own built. LOL

So when I had the car at Laguna Seca for the USCA event (shake down miles before she got her first drive) --- on the tour portion of that event - we stopped for lunch at The Baja Cantina in Carmel Valley -- and I snapped off a couple of cell phone pics of the car sitting in front. I then commissioned Kenny Youngblood to do a painting of the pic I took. So this is a pic of his PAINTING.....

You guys that are on Instagram have already seen this - but I wanted to share with those that are not on there.

SSLance 06-20-2014 07:44 PM

Holey crap!! That is cool Greg. Nicely done...

He painted that from a cell phone pic? :hail:

GregWeld 06-20-2014 07:59 PM

So here's Gwen seeing the car at Brizio's for the first time -- of course she's moving so I couldn't get a decent picture...

http://i919.photobucket.com/albums/a...o/IMG_0073.jpg

She opens the door.... and she's IN!!

http://i919.photobucket.com/albums/a...o/IMG_0075.jpg

So this was all planned so that we could pick up the car - leave our normal car at the shop - and drive to the L A Roadster show with the Bay Area Roadster Club - and a group of Brizio built cars... about 35 of us all together. This really made the trip fun and we had some stops along the way which was all planned by the BAR group.

http://i919.photobucket.com/albums/a...o/IMG_5742.jpg

http://i919.photobucket.com/albums/a...IMG_5741-1.jpg

A SELFIE using the camera places Gwen on the wrong side in this picture - but that's her driving...

http://i919.photobucket.com/albums/a...o/IMG_5761.jpg

Parked at the show with the "group" in Brizio's booth....

http://i919.photobucket.com/albums/a...o/IMG_0084.jpg

And the very first L A Roadster Show -- a 50th Anniversary sticker on the headlight!! Yippppeeeeee

http://i919.photobucket.com/albums/a...o/IMG_0080.jpg

We left LA and drove up Highway 1 -- to Big Sur.... for a little R&R (it is HER birthday MONTH after all...)

http://i919.photobucket.com/albums/a...o/IMG_0095.jpg

Left there (Carmel and Monterey area) and headed back to the Briz's shop... after a stop at Canepa -- and Sid Chavers to have the seat rebuilt --- it doesn't fit HER at all... (what happens when you're just guessing!)....

Yep! No kidding! The man has some serious talent!

I posted the actual cell phone pic earlier in the thread -- he used the very same pic --- just cropped to place the car "bigger".

Well - to be perfectly honest - it makes it a hell of a lot easier when you don't have to shop the vacuum cleaner aisle. LOL

Track Junky 06-20-2014 09:05 PM

That's awesome Greg. Is this the first time Gwen has done a car thing with you? My wife is finally starting to get into it.

No -- we've been together for 42 years - and I've been doing car stuff even longer than that.... and she's done quite a few things car related. She's just never been into it that much. I have to make it "special" --- like this trip... where we did some car stuff - and then some Gwen stuff... Where most of us can just do all car and nothing else and be happy as little clams.

Or like racing at Laguna the day after Thanksgiving.... we did Thanksgiving with the kids there -- and it's a beautiful area - so a little car tossed in is fine.

Also makes it a lot tougher to nail a 4-bagger.

Lenie 06-20-2014 10:01 PM

Greg, the car's absolutely beautiful. Gwen looks like she loved the car and sounds like you two had a great time on the trip together, man that's all that matters! Great idea, chalk one up for Greg Weld.

Thanks Lenie! I feel the very same way -- this was all about her.... and we had a great time in a great car.

Sid will make it more comfortable for her to drive after we stopped by his shop for some consultation and fit up. And Briz is going to replace the Vega steering box... this one is punked (even though it's brand new)... which made Hiway 1 a lot of work... but cruising a nice hot rod up that Hiway ain't all bad regardless.

Not my fault.

I believe you've turned poor Doc Sawbones statement around just a bit... perhaps he more likely stated:

You are swimming in DEEP SH!T because you're from the SHALLOW END of the gene pool.

I still have absolutely no idea what The Siegymeister was trying to say. I think BEER may have played a part - on his part.

........all positive. I'm absolutely thrilled that your plan played out so well and Gwen appears to be wholeheartedly enjoying the car. Doesn't get much better than that IMO.

Regarding 4-bagger, reference your comment regarding GWPH.

As for the purple shirt comment I didn't want to come across as all teary eyed and jubilant........after all this is a manly car forum. :D

AH HA! Tough to tie in a personal email comment.... about a stock I bought - back a couple of weeks - then drag that into a car thread... and be able to make ANY kind of connection. That connection - thin as it is/was - was only made in your mind. LOL OMG... You must have been really spent after long days of cutting and welding to come up with that one! LOL

fleet 06-21-2014 06:51 AM

I like the baseball definition of '4 bagger'.

...and that is how I took your comment Sieg since the 33 is a huge (car) home run.

glassman 06-21-2014 09:01 AM

Congrats on the great trip Greg!!

Where was that pic taken in Big Sur? What a beautiful looking place....

Looks awesome Greg, I saw this car guys when Greg had it @ Laguna when it only had 100 miles or so in it...stared at it all day long!

I take it you guys were already here on the Peninsula and didn't call or write? Oh well, looks like you had fun and glad Gwen is enjoying her present...looks like you stayed at the Post Ranch, love that view, have got to get back.

Mine's still in paint jail, hope to have it out soon...I miss driving it.

We didn't stop to see any car buddies.... this trip was all about Gwen and HER birthday - so the only car part was the "excuse" of the Fathers Day show in Pomona.... after that it was just relax and cruise up the coast.

Thanks for the nice compliments on the car. I think it turned out just killer! It's exactly what I had in my head when I described it to Roy and Dave. The rest is just magic the way those guys build cars.

buickfunnycar.com 06-21-2014 06:43 PM

To say the car is stunning is an understatement...it's perfection personified...I just hope I didn't drool on it too badly!

Greg, Congrats on the build, that hotrod is phenomenal! That is awesome to surprise your wife and then take the car out on that trip like that!
The painting you had commissioned is also amazing! Talk about having one heck of a month...lol.

That looks like a beautiful drive up the coast, and I agree what an awesome view. I love the picture of the car in post 1371, perfect shot!
