2020 10-19 Holley Clipped Corner Tank

So I pulled the trigger and ordered the Holley Clipped Corner tanks and it was the right decision. It has solved my clearance issue with the tailpipe which will also allow me to have extra room if I ever decided to install wider tires on the rear and if I do will at least have the room to make new tailpipes.

Preparing for the Power Tour - Fuel Pump Access Door (( 10-21-20 ))

I know this is overkill but I really don't want to ever have to drop the tank when it has fuel in it.

http://www.garagescene.net/_data/i/u...90a221e-me.jpg

One of the benefits of the blue tape is I can write notes right on the tank.

http://www.garagescene.net/_data/i/u...651ca12-me.jpg

http://www.garagescene.net/_data/i/u...05ebe14-me.jpg

Talk about a tight fit.

I needed to open these up just a little bit so I could slide them in place.

http://www.garagescene.net/_data/i/u...f9c0a33-me.jpg

So this is how I tightened them back up. Anyone do this a different way as I would love to know if there is a better way.

http://www.garagescene.net/_data/i/u...90eaeb1-me.jpg

I put tape on the straps temporarily and once the tank is in for the final time I will install the rubber strips.

http://www.garagescene.net/_data/i/u...e18b102-me.jpg

Had to call the wife out to help me put the tank in for the first time. Once the straps are bent I can easily remove and install the tank by myself.

http://www.garagescene.net/_data/i/u...083adff-me.jpg

Tank is in and it looks so much better.

http://www.garagescene.net/_data/i/u...7950a1b-me.jpg

I had to shorten the lines just a little bit and I was even smart enough to lay the wiring on the top of the tank. This will allow me to terminate the wire at the sending unit and the fuel pump. I will also need to run ground wire which I forgot to install.

http://www.garagescene.net/_data/i/u...f2f2cd9-me.jpg

I quickly installed the tailpipes just to see how much of a difference the new tank would make.

Planning the Atomic 4L60E Transmission Coolant Lines (( 10-24-20 ))

Time to start planning the soft lines for the transmission.

I will need to order a few more fitting from Summit so I run soft lines from the transmission to the hard lines under the core support.

http://www.garagescene.net/_data/i/u...82db5bc-me.jpg

http://www.garagescene.net/_data/i/u...c580335-me.jpg

Having soft lines at the transmission will make it easier to remove the trans and i won't have to worry about trying to figure out how I would get a wrench on the fittings if i did a hard line.

Tanks Ink Fuel Pump Access Door Install (( 10-24-20 ))

In order for me to be able to install the access door I am going to have to remove all of the parts in the trunk. The good news is most of the parts have already left the trunk and have been installed on the car. So I am feeling like the car is getting closer to getting back together.

http://www.garagescene.net/_data/i/u...c4dd14c-me.jpg

Don't hate me as I went to Harbor Freight and bout a disposable panels saw.

4l60e - 700R4 Case Compare (( 10-27-20 ))

When we built version 1.0 of the car it had a 700R4. Version 2.0 is getting 4L60e built by Atomic Transmission in Villa Park, IL. What I have learned is that the mounting position on the tailshaft is further back and the top of the case is a little fatter. Which means there is a a whole lot less room on the sides for you to reach up and install the wiring and tighten the coolant line fittings.

http://www.garagescene.net/_data/i/u...cb4f404-me.jpg

For now the empty 700r4 case is going back in as I can't seem to find one. You can see I had to drill new holes in the G-Force Crossmember for the 4L60e which are currently hidden under the tape.

5th Gen Edelbrock Shorty Headers (( 10-31-20 ))

So Mike called me to ask what I was doing and I told him I was about to install the headers in the car and that I would call him back in 5 minutes. Every step of the way on this build I wanted to make a car that was easy to work on and fun to drive. Since I a very content with 468hp I didn't see a need for long tube headers and a 3" exhaust. So we took a set of Edelbrock shorty headers and the guys at High Speed Welding made a down tube to connect to the exhaust.

Nice work, as usual, Marty! I always enjoy reveling in your use of blue tape, lol. I’m interested in some info on your trans....I’ve gotta pull the trigger on one for my Nova build and with so many going T56, there’s not a lot of info out there for auto’s, not to mention it’s my first go around with an automatic outside of my daily driver. So interested in why you chose Atomic and if you have any experience? I’ve seen a lot of bad reviews on Monster and my body shop said they’ve not had good luck lately with TCI so I’ve been putting it off and looking around but they all start looking the same. Also love your use of the short flexible coolant lines that connect to the hard lines...I’m probably gonna plagiarize that but I’ll definitely give you the credit! Thanks:cheers:

Morning Shane,

What can I say i love my tape and I think i should give 3m a call and ask them to send me a few rolls.

As for the automatic transmission it goes back to my Syclone/Typhoon days. Bowler builds an incredible transmission and I would highly recommend them as know what it takes to build a transmission that can handle autocross and track use. I choose to go with Atomic Transmission for this build as they are local to me (12 miles) and they have built a bunch for the guys in the Syclone/Typhoon community and everyone loves them. They also build a bunch of drag race and pro-touring car automatics. These guys are car guys first and love building transmission for our cars. I have a bunch of friends that have there transmissions in their cars and swear by them. So I decided to go with them.

When I asked them for a empty case so I could powder coat it they ordered me a new case so it would be perfect. The best part is when I brought the case back they wrapped it in towels and the gentleman that assembled it was so excited to work on it that when I came back to pick it up. He actually helped me load it in my truck. He wanted to make sure no one scratched or even touched it. He also told me he kept it on his toolbox and told everyone not to touch it. With that being said you know he is a true car guy and I feel confident he went above and beyond to building my transmission.

I also like the feeling that if I have an issue I can drive the car over to them and have them help me. It's also why I use the guys at Village Auto & Customs as they are minutes from my house and if I need anything they will actually walk out the front door and look at the car for me.

My goal with this car is to have a fun reliable driver that I feel confident about jumping in the car and driving cross country. Similar to our daily drivers. If your afraid to drive your car or it's a hassle to drive it's just not worth owning to me. So as Greg Weld once told me build something that you can drive and drive daily so you can enjoy it. He also told me to by a Porsche and uhm that was a pretty darn good suggestion.

Holley PFT Fuel Line (( 10-31-20 ))

After talking with the guys at Holley I decided that I was going to skip making hard lines and just run soft lines front to rear. The benefit is there would only be two possible places it could leak and it would take a lot less time to run.

I started at the Filter/Regulator and plan to run up and over to the rear frame rail and use the OE mounting points for the line.

In order to keep the line above the frame I took advantage of this slot and ran the line through it.

http://www.garagescene.net/_data/i/u...8454247-me.jpg

I am also ordering some aviation wrap from Tech to put around the fuel line as it passes through this area.

Assembling the Holley Sniper Sheet Metal Intake (( 11-02-20 ))

The car is progressing nicely and it's time to address the one issue I have with the Holley Intake. I've been working with the guys at Holley and I explained to them the Fuel Log connecting the rails in the front is way to short. It's so tight that it actually bends the rails in when I try to install the Throttle Body.

http://www.garagescene.net/_data/i/u...e51a789-me.jpg

http://www.garagescene.net/_data/i/u...717afc5-me.jpg

http://www.garagescene.net/_data/i/u...b20275f-me.jpg

http://www.garagescene.net/_data/i/u...261b264-me.jpg

So I am going to plan "B" and ordering up a few more fitting and going to use the Black PFT line and I will add 1.5" to the length of the line so it fits neatly under the throttle body.

Today I am going to try to figure out a good way to run the transmission coolant lines. I started at the

to black so it blends in with the engine bay,

Not going to lie to you guys it's been 20+ years since I have bent brake lines (( 11-14-20 ))

So it has been years since I made brake lines and I figured what the heck I have nothing but time so why not give it a shot. I decided I
was going to make the mock up line in the 3 pieces and then come back and attempt to make the line in one piece.

So out comes the trusty metal coat hangers and I made my first pattern.

Then the next

2nd Attempt at the brake lines (( 11-15-20 ))

No one ever called me a quitter.

I am going to skip most everything I did to get to this point.

http://www.garagescene.net/_data/i/u...49a2243-me.jpg

Love this tool from Eastwood.

http://www.garagescene.net/_data/i/u...44a3ea7-me.jpg

Looks like I will be doing it again as I miss-calculated where I needed to bend the lines so I straightened it and bent again so I could get closer on the next attempt.

http://www.garagescene.net/_data/i/u...67f2f8d-me.jpg

Thankfully brake lines are cheap.

syborg tt 12-30-2020 09:32 AM

Don't ever call me a quitter (( 11-20-20 ))

Since I am still not happy with the brake line it's off to Eastwood for a couple more tools.

Here we go again. As you can see I was practicing the bends that each tool was able to do and making reference marks on each piece so I would have a much better chance of bending the lines exactly where & how I want them to turn out.

I used the string to determine exactly how much brake line I will need to make the desired piece.

I am amazed at the work and quality you get done.

Few understand how much work it is to get this stuff done right. Humbled by your quality and drive.

Brake Lines Brake Lines Brake Lines (( 11-21-20 ))

Picking up where I left off I need to connect both front calipers to the master and my goal was to keep is simple and fairly
easy build. I plan to install a Knotchead line clamp under it to support it.

http://www.garagescene.net/_data/i/u...af5e9c7-me.jpg

Time to make the final line.

Since I made reference marks on the practice line I used those to make the new line all in one piece and it turned out exactly how I wanted it.

http://www.garagescene.net/_data/i/u...df0b308-me.jpg

Yep, I kept practicing with the scrap pieces to help me learn where to line up the tools so I can get the desired bends.

http://www.garagescene.net/_data/i/u...e4b2047-me.jpg

So I was feeling a little bit ambitious and I gave it another crack on the crossover line on the subframe.

http://www.garagescene.net/_data/i/u...54c9daa-me.jpg

I needed an extra hand so I put the brake line bender in my Grandfathers Vice and wow was this a total game changer it was like having Mike in the garage helping me.

I just realized the sweatshirt that I am wearing in this picture was the last gift I received from my Grandmother before she died
in 1989. It had moved with me many times over the years and I never wore it. A few years back I pulled it out and decided I would
finally where it.

http://www.garagescene.net/_data/i/u...f86dbaf-me.jpg

http://www.garagescene.net/_data/i/u...b5fd26e-me.jpg

Using the reference marks I made allowed me to duplicate the final line all in one piece. I also traced out the line with sting so I new exactly how much line was necessary. It would have sucked if I had started with a 60" line as this line turned out to be 62" in length.

http://www.garagescene.net/_data/i/u...1bc1f5b-me.jpg

The tape makes the line not look centered but it is actually almost perfect.

Not Going to lie bending these lines scares me (( 11-27-20 ))

As the title says I am a little bit nervous trying to remake these lines.

http://www.garagescene.net/_data/i/u...2cc673f-me.jpg

My plan is to take the existing line and straighten then bend it like it needs to be since I moved things around a little bit.

I wanted to link the lines together so I will be using the Knotchead line clamps. A quick trip to the local Ace Hardware to pick up
some hardware and while I was there I scored a couple Hot Wheels Syclones. I also stopped a Dairy Queen for a Blizzard.

Throttle Bracket - Still playing around a ((11-28-20))

Trying to make this bracket a little leaner.

http://www.garagescene.net/_data/i/u...0153920-me.jpg

I think if I trim it down to something like this and get it anodized black it will blend right in. Before I trim it down I need to get a new Lokar throttle cable.

Radiator ((11-29-20))

http://www.garagescene.net/_data/i/u...948692e-me.jpg

I want to hide as many wires as possible so the horn wire will sneak behind the core support. I used a piece of door edge guard to protect the wires.

http://www.garagescene.net/_data/i/u...7b352ba-me.jpg

http://www.garagescene.net/_data/i/u...ddf299f-me.jpg

little bit of an overkill to crimp and solder but what the heck why not.

http://www.garagescene.net/_data/i/u...430a983-me.jpg

I tried to make the trunk a little more comfortable for me back.

http://www.garagescene.net/_data/i/u...1aad6cb-me.jpg

I need to run a 3.5mm extension up to the center console and the cable for the controller which will be mounted in the lower dash or center console. I won't decide that till I figure where the cup holders are going to go.

The best tip ever is to secure a rubber band around the grips so you don't have to worry about holding them closed.
