Wow, that is some shine. Having big "guns" like yours sure helps! When that motor is in this car will be unbelievable.

zbugger 03-21-2008 07:21 PM

It's looking real good Jody. I can't wait to see it all together.

I'm still amazed that one can spend 40-60 hours sanding and buffing a paint job.. it's really sort of crazy...

Looks killer Jody.. Very nice!

clill 03-21-2008 08:52 PM

He's gonna get a rock chip and want to sell the car.

thanks Steve. We'll have every bit of that amount of time by the time we're done with the buffing. It's unreal.

ok, this will be the last paint update until the car is more completed. Today Jim and I finished off the passenger door, 1/4 panel, and trunk lid, along with some misc small stuff. Should be done buffing tomorrow...........

Here's the trunk; ignore the mess in the background, the shop is thrashed right now.

here's the door and 1/4 panel; the door is not fully closed but it's taped up so I didn't want to untape it to close it completely...............

Musclerodz 03-22-2008 08:42 PM

Looks great Jody.

It doesn't take long to get to 40 hours of buff time on a big car. I got 10 hours just in the shell of this '57 HT I am doing and will need a couple hours more to finish it. Still have every other body panel to go.

Nice thing about your color is if you used a dark primer and sealer, chips should not be easily seen.

Spiffav8 03-22-2008 09:12 PM

:wow: That's amazing!....now do mine.

VERY VERY nice Jody! You have only made a bad ass car even better.

Payton King 03-24-2008 06:47 AM

What grit paper did you use?

I have heard 600 then 2000. Also 800, 1000, 1500 then cut and buff.

Paint looks fantastic!

V8TV 03-24-2008 06:50 AM

I like how Jody says "ignore the mess in the background..." You're insane, man. If our shop was as clean as yours, we'd probably be too afraid to work in it! :hail:

we started at 600 on most the vertical panels and 1000 on the horizontal ones (clear lays smoother on them). Then 1000, 1500, 2000, and finally 2500 before buffing.

Thanks everyone.

Payton King 03-24-2008 07:51 AM

thanks for the info

Your car is really starting to come together. You have to be getting excited!

camcojb 03-24-2008 07:53 AM

yeah, I was up late last night cleaning up the sanding mess on the car, and putting emblems, mouldings, and taillights back on. Starting to look like a car.

:D It's thrashed for me. Kinda like the time Mr. Charley decides to bring a visitor over un-announced (Mark Stielow) and the shop is torn up............. kinda embarrassing......... :faint:

Im glad to see these results!! its perfect. I never started wetsanding with 600 grit,I read this in this months issue of HOT ROD and it makes sense. I always get that heavy wavey look with my base clear finishes, always wondering how these hi end finishes are so flat. I could never get a straight answer. I always start with 1500 and go up to 2500 but it always had that wavey finish no matter how much I blocked the car . So from what I understand now the 600 grit is cutting down the orange peel, not rounding the orange peel is this correct???

the 600 cuts the orangepeel faster, and gets the clearcoat much flatter than starting at 1200+. As you've noticed, if you start too high you'll never get it as flat; it will look flat looking straight at it, but wavy/bumpy from other angles and lights. The key though, you need to have enough clear on the car to pull it off.

Jody
