Thanks, Greg. Well, let's just hope the Chassisworks G-Link gives it the stance it deserves. I've seen G-Bar Camaros that are pretty low, but I've yet to see a 67 or 68 Camaro with the G-Link at ride height. I'll be quite disappointed if it doesn't give me the stance I'm looking for.

Looking very good.. you've gotta love how a simple project seems to snowball into a full on re-build. lol

Your work looks very good, nobody would know that you're a "novice".. nice job!

Wheels look great! Let us know how the speed tech coil overs work out. Been looking at that option myself!

SO3's with a polished outer lip, brushed/cleared centers and the hidden bolt option. I can't wait to see them on the car.

Very nice job! I've been debating whether to minitub my 69 myself. I am 90% sure I will do it myself after seeing your build. Pics are worth a thousand words. Again great job. You should be very proud. You have learned a trade or at least make some extra bucks doing this for others in your area.

Thanks. Trust me when I tell you that it's not hard at all. Just take your time on your cuts and keep fitting until it just won't fit any better. Then weld and seam seal. Just think of the cash you'll save by doing it yourself.

ItDoRun 01-16-2010 02:08 PM

A little more progress made. The DSE sub frame connectors are in and tack welded. Pretty fun project. A little nerve racking trying to make sure the subframe was square, but overall, pretty straight forward. I plan to weld the inside of the car solid, then install the seat pans. I'll finish the underside when the car is on the rotisserie. One step closer!!!

I bet I measured that subframe 40 times making sure it was square.

Nice work Chris!! I can't imagine what it was like cutting TWO big holes in a BRAND NEW floor!! :willy: :faint:

I know. I thought about that several times. What would be nice is if someone could make sub frame connectors like the DSE ones that only weld on the bottom side of the car without going through the floor. I don't know if the strength would be there, though.

awr68 01-16-2010 03:07 PM

You had to cut the SFC to length and weld on the close out plate, right? If so....nice welds man!!

Yeah, I had to cut about 1/2" - 5/8" off the end and then weld the end plates on. I've been testing the waters on TIG welding when I'm slow at work. I wanted to TIG the brackets and end plate on these, but I would have to wait until Monday and this part of the project has been dragging on too long. Thanks.

Thanks, brother. I try to improve on my welding each time I do it. I guess I'm so used to welding sheetmetal, that it's nice to weld something with some meat behind it every once in a while.

Good deal.
Keep us posted on your build please!

Yeah, I bolted the front fenders back on and measured from the outer wheel lip to the wheel and it was 3/8" difference between the driver and passenger side.

If you noticed in the pictures, I didn't weld the connectors in fully. I'm gonna wait until I get the new wheels and put them under the car for more measurements. I think I'll be okay though.

Yeah, those Saints looked good tonight! I'd love to see them in the Super Bowl this year.

That's great. Way better than it was before. Nice job! Those wheels are going to look like a million bucks on there.

Got the subframe connectors welded in today on the inside of the car. I'll do the bottom side when the car is on the rotisserie. I also got the seat pans notched to go around the connectors. I'll weld those in tomorrow and get everything epoxy sealed. Pictures tomorrow.

ItDoRun 01-27-2010 05:50 PM

Seat pans and frame connectors are in. I also scuffed the floor pan again and reprimed the entire floor.

Next up is the front subframe.

It's ready to go now, but I think I'm going to attack the subframe first. Speedtech is supposed to be shipping my control arms and shocks this coming Monday (2/2), and I'd like to have it ready to install the new parts by next weekend if possible. My goal is to get those horrible factory welds cleaned up, the seams welded solid, and everything primed before I install the parts.

Then, I need to weld the G-Link bracketry to the rear frame rails. Once those are on, she'll go on the rotisserie. The underside should be a cake walk since everything is new. Once it goes on the rotisserie, I plan for the undercarriage to be finished when it comes off. We'll see. I need to get cranking on this thing because our lovely south Louisiana summer will be here soon!

70rs 01-27-2010 07:50 PM

It sounds like you are in the home stretch with the chassis fab and finish. Not too long and it will be a roller again. I am going to do the same to my stock sub too. Let me know how it goes for you.

Sweet work and congrats on taking the bull by the horns and running with it...inspiration to us all!

Chris,
Looking awsome!
Is that the same Omni epoxy primer on the floor that you used on the rest the car?
I have bought a qt. of it to try out. Thanks for the heads up!

Love those new wheels!

Greg

All the grey primer you see is the Omni line from PPG. The black primer on the outside is actually DP-90. I compared the two cans and they are identical. My local paint distributor swears by the Omni line and really pushed me to use it. The DP is supposedly better, so I decided to go that route for the exterior of the car. Not sure if it matters.

awr68 01-28-2010 04:47 PM

Very nice work Chris!!

796spdbu 01-28-2010 09:50 PM

Chris,
I have used the DP series of epoxy primers for several years. It hold up pretty well to UV light.

I had a customer who wanted a flat black paint scheme and didnt want to pay for flattened clear. I told him since the DP wasnt top coated it would fade over time. It took almost 3 years for it to really turn chalky.

As far as the Omni goes, I talked to my paint guy and he said if you are going to use it in an area that you werent getting back into(like body work) it would be fine to use under any single or 2 stage paint. Up until I read your thread I had never looked into there line of sealers.

Thanks for answering my question.

Greg

Latest update:

Wheels are in. Tires were mounted and balanced this morning. Upper and lower control arms from Speedtech are in. My Hotchkis front sway bar arrived Thursday. Yesterday, my Chicane brackets and springs arrived for the Chicane coil over conversion...shocks should be here next week. All seams on the subframe were welded up.

Here's pictures of the wheels and tires. They look incredible under the car...well, at least I'm partial to them.
