I was able to work on my wife's car yesterday and today. I got some epoxy primer on and painted the cowl and firewall. Now its time to seam seal.

Jay Hilliard 01-10-2011 05:57 PM

Over the holidays I had the car primed, installed the subframe and starting hanging the repop fenders. The first set was way off with the brackets, so I sent them back and got and another pair in. The brackets were correct but the gaps were huge and was going to require major attention to keep my 6 year old son from fall ing in and never to been seen again. Ok, Im exaggerating some, but 5/16"-3/8" gaps from fender to door was nothing to take lightly.

So, not exactly sure what my best option was and needing an expert opinion, I called the the resident expert fabricator and gave Dan from Holohan's HotRod Shop in Mooresville a call. I described the situation to Dan and was surprised when he told me, "No problem, I will come down Saturday, take a look at it and we'll work on it". I was not expecting that.

Talk about customer service, and having a passion for cars and wanting them look right, Dan (true to his word) drove 1hr 45 minutes along with Jack (the dog..aka "fur person")to my house, checked everything over and we started on the fix, which was to add filler rod to the door and alot of it.

Many thanks my friend for coming down and on a Saturday. Thanks for the help and pointers. It is very much appreciated!!

Now time to do some grinding and final gapping.

No, we used 1/8" & 3/16" rod then TIG welded the rod to the door.

Thanks Mario,

I needed advice as I wasnt sure what the best fix was with my situation. Add to door and/or fender, disect part of the fender or cut fender brackets and move. This was my first outing with repop fenders. I have read numerous threads, etc but I guess you have to experience it yourself. :D

Looking good Jay. Those are AMD fenders?

Comforting to hear more good things about Dan. If all goes as planned I should be meeting up with him in February  .

Hey John...I will send you a PM as I dont want people to think I'm bashing a vendor as I am definitely not. I spoke with a fellow of the company and informed him of my issues and he was very responsive and was glad I called and asked me to send pics.

I guess I'm surprised that these aftermarket peices take so much loving or maybe its my OCD kicking in.

Let me know when you are bringing your Nova up. Im sure Dan will do an excellent job for you.

Frankenstine 01-17-2011 07:38 PM

looking good Jay, been following your build, i'm origanaly from NC also.
I just purchased a 69 myself and will prob look Dan up when i get ready to start, Question? are the doors replacement? if so what manufacture? and also the fenders are they AMD? I was thinking about using AMD on my build. as mine will prob need fenders and doors and quarters, i'm not looking to start any negitive post about peplacement metal just trying to get an idea about whats out there.
thanks
keith

Jay Hilliard 01-18-2011 01:20 PM

Hey Keith,

My doors are original with AMD skins. I used AMD qtrs and fenders. The fenders had nice crisp lines and aligned to the door peak nicely. I was disappointed with the size of the gap between door and fender. However, adding some filler rod to the doors fixed the gap issue and its a nice 3/16"-1/4" gap now. I am pleased with AMD sheetmetal, especially the gauge of the metal and lines compared to other makes.

I will try to get some updated pics showing gaps soon.

DFRESH 01-18-2011 07:07 PM

That's awesome Jay--great to see the progress! That's cool that he came to your place and got the fix going on the doors right away. I couldn't even wish for something like that, so it amazes me that you got such a quick fix for a very important part of the car----the gaps---that's very cool.

Doug

Jay Hilliard 01-21-2011 07:04 AM

Thanks Doug. Dan is a great guy, who has a passion for building/metal working cars. I can't thank him enough for coming by and helping me out.

Here are some pics of the final door/fender gaps. I think they turned out awesome. I'm happy with the end result.

I took a break for awhile. I have been busy lately doing the small things, like fitting hood, headlight housings, grille, subframe connectors etc. I plan to get all this wrapped up soon so I can disassemble and put it on rotissere for seam sealing and spraying undercoating.

Jay Hilliard 06-06-2011 01:29 PM

Getting closer

Finally got my hood gaps and cowl gaps like I wanted, etc. Put the leaf springs and rear under it Sat. and will install Hotchkis subframe connectors in this week.
