Wow AJ I love what you doing. Very nice fab work.

tones2SS 04-07-2011 05:43 PM

Looks great AJ. Keep up the great work.
That battery tray looks awesome.

CamaroAJ 04-07-2011 06:35 PM

thanks guys!

CamaroAJ 04-08-2011 08:42 PM

been working on this some over the last few days. since i had to cut out a chunk or the floor to mount the rear suspension i needed to replace it now that the suspension is done.

the fill panel mocked up for the last time to check fitment.
http://a1.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphot..._3387831_n.jpg

from the trunk side. i left the ends open because i need to notch the floor for the exhaust. can't do that until the fuel cell gets here.
http://a1.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphot..._3949895_n.jpg

tack welded in
http://a3.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphot..._3512143_n.jpg

half welded, ground down and sanded
http://a4.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphot..._7771489_n.jpg

the other side fully welded and the 3rd link cover mocked into place. just need to trim a few things and start tack welding it in and then building the a box for the ends.
http://a5.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphot..._5783394_n.jpg

CamaroAJ 04-16-2011 09:20 PM

a lot of parts showed up this week. which always happens when you don't have time to work on them, got a few things done today though.

http://a3.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphot..._6986330_n.jpg

my used z06 exhaust i picked up off of corvette forum.
http://a6.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphot..._5699197_n.jpg

cut off the important parts and junked the rest
http://a2.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphot..._5745764_n.jpg

got one valve welded into the passenger side muffler after i check for clearance. they will work like factory corvettes. open at 25% and up throttle and 3000 RPM, has to meet both of them not just one. they are 3" flowtech warlock mufflers. they are set up the same as Z06 mufflers but a smaller package and sound better (i hope).
http://a4.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphot..._4239497_n.jpg

the rest of the exhaust control parts are on back order so i only got a little bit of of the control wiring done.
http://a5.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphot..._4324860_n.jpg
http://a8.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphot...9_648131_n.jpg

i did manage to get one thing done today though. got the cage built for the 22g ATL fuel cell.
http://a7.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphot..._1744147_n.jpg

didn't take any pictures but i got front and rear C5 vette calipers. they should go out to powder coat soon and then rebuild them with stainless pistons.

coolwelder62 04-17-2011 05:11 AM

This is starting to real nice.Love the 3 link setup.

bonecrrusher 04-17-2011 06:14 AM

You going with some kind of NPP in a box or a Mild 2 Wild controller?

building my own system with parts from another company. the m2w and npp stuff are not automatic controled like my system is.

GregWeld 04-17-2011 10:48 AM

AJ,

I got a good chuckle out of your "half welded ground down and sanded"..... You and I must be a lot alike. I can't stand just welding for 2 or 3 hours... I have to stop and partly finish.... then make a patch... then weld some...

speedshftr 04-17-2011 10:52 AM

you are very very talented.i just read the whole thread.my hats off to you.:hail:

lol i could only sit in there welding for so long before i got too bored to do anymore. the other side is welded now but i haven't ground it down yet. figured i do it when i grind the 3rd link cover.

CamaroAJ 04-21-2011 08:37 PM

been pretty busy so i haven't gotten a lot of time to work on the car. i did get the other muffler done so that makes 2.
http://a7.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphot..._7105144_n.jpg

and the fuel cell done.
mocked in the cage to check fitment and measure for the fill panel i needed to make.
http://a1.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphot..._4350807_n.jpg

needed to cut the stock fill hump shorter and fill it back in.
http://a3.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphot..._3957016_n.jpg

then using 3M 8115 panel bond adhesive i mounted the cage to the car. it holds the cage in as well as doubling as a seam sealer. its also welded in a few places and will also be tied to the frame and cage.
http://a7.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphot..._1683098_n.jpg

after it dried i put the cell in.
http://a6.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphot..._3715992_n.jpg

at the lowest point its 8". thats more than i had in my '67 and there has never been a clearance issue with that car.
http://a5.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphot..._1164646_n.jpg

coolwelder62 04-22-2011 05:27 AM

Wow!! That look's great. Will the tank have a EFI pump in the tank or outside. Scott M.

CamaroAJ 04-22-2011 01:35 PM

pump inside, i'm planning on 4-6 pick ups so i don't have to put in a trap. its the same pump i had in my other car. its been in that car since '06 with zero issues so i feel really good about using it again.

CamaroAJ 04-26-2011 07:44 PM

been busy and haven't had a lot of time to work on the car. i did finish the the 3rd link cover today though.

http://a1.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphot..._5397834_n.jpg
http://a8.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphot..._6022173_n.jpg

lots of welding and grinding all day. it sucked but now i have to grind the bottom which will suck even more. i might just wait on that until i get it on a rotisserie.

greg, i finished grinding and smoothing the other side.

coolwelder62 04-27-2011 05:27 AM

Lookin great as alway's.Really going to have a great ride when your finished.

johnnymac46 04-27-2011 04:06 PM

I've been following your build for a while now. This is going to be one bad car, it looks awesome.

CamaroAJ 04-27-2011 06:26 PM

thanks guys, looking forward to driving it more than anything.

bonecrrusher 04-27-2011 06:35 PM

Where are the mufflers going to sit?

CamaroAJ 04-27-2011 07:05 PM

not sure yet. i want to try and put them on either side of the fuel cell. if not then they do fit in the stock location (already checked fitment)

CamaroAJ 05-15-2011 02:16 PM

worked on the car for the first time since my last update today. got the rear floor metal work done for the over axle exhaust. and also fixed a stripped out body mount nut. i'm not sure how much lead they used in these aftermarket floor pan nuts but 20ft. lbs is all it took to pull all the threads out.

http://a5.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphot..._4454609_n.jpg

http://a1.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphot..._8256282_n.jpg

http://a6.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphot..._2957260_n.jpg

then i got the exhaust notches cut out

http://a7.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphot...9_519988_n.jpg

http://a5.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphot..._6156589_n.jpg

i bent the notch covers out of 16g since thats what i have laying aournd.

http://a4.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphot..._7243263_n.jpg

then they were welded and smoothed.

http://a7.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphot..._8269847_n.jpg

http://a8.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphot..._5921561_n.jpg

over all i'm happy with them. its still going to be a pain running 3" exhaust because of the fuel cell but i'll cross that bridge later.

http://a3.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphot..._3808488_n.jpg

i also got a new smaller MOMO steering wheel and put it on to check fit. the adapter doesn't fit very well so i'll have to turn it doen in the leathe.

http://a2.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphot..._5657735_n.jpg

waynieZ 05-15-2011 06:32 PM

CamaroAJ 05-17-2011 07:41 PM

thanks guys:thumbsup: . got some more rust patching done tonight and will finish the other side tomorrow. then i'll mod the new front inner fenders to clear the big tires.

CamaroAJ 05-19-2011 07:35 PM

got the driver and passenger inner quarter repaired over the last few days. haven't had much time to work on it this week but still feel pretty good about what i got done.

passenger side cancer and someones attempt to fix it.
http://a4.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphot..._7737157_n.jpg

new panel in place ready to weld.
http://a6.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphot...57_33567_n.jpg

welded in
http://a5.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphot..._7270269_n.jpg

finished
http://a6.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphot...0_639577_n.jpg

really old picture of the drivers side but you can see there wasn't much left.
http://a8.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphot..._1051640_n.jpg

driver side mocked up
http://a4.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphot...1_812513_n.jpg

ground and sanded
http://a8.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphot..._5678667_n.jpg

and thats all for the rust in the back of the car. the only thing thats left on the rust repair dept. is lower windshied.

mrgm 05-19-2011 10:58 PM

Nice metal work.

waynieZ 05-20-2011 09:31 AM

Nice job. Its nice that they make something you can get a piece off for that repair imagine trying to copy it by hand.

CamaroAJ 06-01-2011 07:54 PM

got my rear firewall figured out. been busy with things and haven't got to play with the car till tonight.

rear firewall mocked up

http://a2.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphot..._4319701_n.jpg

this is my second time bead rolling so not bad but not great.

http://a8.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphot..._4174480_n.jpg

then got it tack welded back in.

http://a5.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphot..._3742038_n.jpg

what it looks like from the trunk side

http://a8.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphot...0_932644_n.jpg

mrgm 06-01-2011 10:19 PM

i think that looks great

coolwelder62 06-02-2011 05:45 AM

waynieZ 06-02-2011 08:46 AM

CamaroAJ 07-15-2011 09:15 PM

haven't worked on the car in over a month now. had some things going on but they have settled down so i can get back to work on the car. started earlier this week with some parts i picked up at jegs and goodguys. this covers everything i did this week after i got home in the evenings.

http://a5.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphot..._2809586_n.jpg

since i didn't have a lot of time during the week i knocked out a lot of small projects i wanted to get done. got the drivers body mount access filled.

http://a2.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphot..._3998940_n.jpg

and cut some rust out and called it a night.
http://a1.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphot..._7158119_n.jpg

then i bent up some 18g sheet metal and fixed the driver tulip that had some cancer. this was my first time using a shrinker so i'm pretty happy with how well it come out.

http://a1.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphot..._2578930_n.jpg

http://a7.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphot..._3733361_n.jpg

http://a3.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphot..._7383838_n.jpg

then some more parts showed up

http://a4.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphot..._6690829_n.jpg

got the hard part of running the hard brake line done.

passenger side
http://a4.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphot..._6471445_n.jpg

driver side
http://a6.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphot..._7961700_n.jpg

CamaroAJ 04-28-2012 08:32 PM

So now that I'm back to work on the Camaro I am updating this thread. I'll start with oldest to latest.

First I got the passenger front inner fender modified to fit the 295's without rubbing.
http://sphotos.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-...25157252_n.jpg
http://a3.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphot...12871830_n.jpg
http://sphotos.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-...39581297_n.jpg
http://sphotos.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-...88501343_n.jpg

Then I built bushing ends to a poly bushing and modified the SpeedTech transmission crossmember.
[imghttp://sphotos.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-snc7/s720x720/380748_10151498015720277_537465276_23599707_492869 61_n.jpg[/img]

After that I filled the corners at the rear window since I deleted the package tray.
http://a7.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphot...35303894_n.jpg
http://a8.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphot...92673983_n.jpg
http://sphotos.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-...38314992_n.jpg

And then I shaved the drive and passenger drip rails
http://sphotos.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-...01276799_n.jpg
http://sphotos.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-...96165571_n.jpg

And lastly I scavenged at the junk yard and picked up a mirror, home link with map lights and venture van door latches.
http://sphotos.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-...72531284_n.jpg

Mocked up the new latch mount
http://sphotos.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-...31650648_n.jpg

Passenger door done
http://a3.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphot...07000666_n.jpg

Then mocked up the striker
http://sphotos.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-...89087967_n.jpg

Filled the stock striker hole and the vent.

Good to see you back on it! Just wondering when you get ride of the jam vents how do you think the doors will close when all the windows are up? I'm doing the same thing and have an idea but wanted to see want you are going to do? Keep up the nice work.

mrgm 04-29-2012 07:46 PM

nice progress, and nice work.

ProTourNova 04-30-2012 07:24 AM

thinking about grafting a pressure vent out of a newer car into the backside of the wiper cowl since i'm not using the astro vents anymore or maybe the kick panels. they are a one way flapper vent that all new cars have. size and shape vary from car to car so it may take some time to find the right one.
