Nice job Jack!
BTW -- With kids -- you'll never really have a shop..... it's just a space for their stuff... |

Thanks, and isn't that truth!!! |
I built a 24' x16' shed on the side of the shop for "stuff." Made a great place to hide car shells to keep the wife happy too!! :peepwall:

Here's mine that I just completed. It's a garage attached to the house. Very tough to find this size garage in my area for a decent price.

The garage door I removed the standard motor and low hanging tracks, installed a liftmaster wall mounted motor and spring, and re-routed the tracks up higher to the ceiling. My buddy is on garage journal steady and gave me the idea. The door does not open fully, but it opens about 90%. (The bottom of the door hangs down from the opening about 12") But theres more than enough room to drive a car in. Maybe even an SUV. http://i34.photobucket.com/albums/d1...ps0d38f4b3.jpg http://i34.photobucket.com/albums/d1...ps33e05aad.jpg |
The old workshop or showroom debate will go on forever. I guess everybody's got to hit their own sweet spot in terms of how they want to use the place and how they'd like it to look.
Mine is reasonably well known on the internets. If it's got a virtue, it's that I did a lot with a small space and a small budget. I'm at 20x20 and $3,500. I shop for damaged industrial stuff and then chop and weld from there. I do automotive work in it, and also some carpentry and metal fabrication. I did everything myself, including setting the tile and digging the pit for the lift. Everything in the place is second-hand, re-purposed or home-made. I also made a website for it: http://www.12-gaugegarage.com (This is not spam. I don't make any money off of the website and pay for it out of my own pocket.) http://imageshack.us/a/img5/7153/1023616dlrf.jpg http://imageshack.us/a/img62/5093/redbench.jpg http://imageshack.us/a/img594/5052/c...enteragain.jpg http://img42.imageshack.us/img42/2667/img0467ah.jpg http://img31.imageshack.us/img31/2066/img0434cp.jpg http://imageshack.us/a/img39/8922/centerislandagain.jpg Work benches that fold down from the wall: http://img535.imageshack.us/img535/8585/bothdown.jpg http://img716.imageshack.us/img716/6109/img0427id.jpg http://imageshack.us/a/img405/5157/648uplr.jpg And it's got its own a video: The 12-Gauge Garage Video And yes, a video just about the lift I put in: My Garage Lift Is it always this clean? No. Not by a long shot. http://img191.imageshack.us/img191/5174/headson.jpg http://img688.imageshack.us/img688/1904/humpty.jpg But it does go back to clean very quickly -- that's the real accomplishment of it, I think. I finally took the time to work out a place for everything to go when It's not being used. In practice, it makes a huge difference not having to spend so much time looking for things you've misplaced. I spent years doing that. http://imageshack.us/a/img37/1922/648dnlr.jpg |
Game Over.
Jack is the :king: Your RSR is pretty quick too. ;) |
Thats fine wine right there!!!! You can just see the experience in there....that lift has got me thinkin....i've only got 8.4' ceilings in my garage and have lift envy....

Jack always loved you garage over at GJ. You should post some of your shop tricks in the Handy home shop stuff thread.

What is that black thing on the wall to the left of the sink? :mock: Jeff- |
Thanks, guys!
I don't want to promote too much here. But there's a video made by Petrolicious that shows the lift in use. You've got to put up with me yapping and with everything being all cleaned up for the shoot -- oh, and an old German car, too. But aside from all that... The funny thing about the 'black thing' is: I picked it up second-hand -- it had never been cleaned up or restored. It had just been sitting around... for about 60 years. I plugged it in and was immediately able to dial my cell phone. It made me wonder: what's so great about today's smart phones? Are they going to be able to effortlessly connect to the network 60+ years from now? The old things were built like tanks. And I never have to wonder where I set the cell phone down when I hear it ringing. http://imageshack.us/a/img405/3461/phonelr.jpg |

This Place have been used only as a Storage Place for 1-2 years, so excuse the mess for now. Gonna clean it up. :) So this acts as a contrast to the others :P Especially With all the mess :D Attachment 42934 Attachment 42935 Attachment 42936 |

While the chevelle is away I got started on finishing mine. It was open walled. I ran copper airline throughout, insulated and am starting on sheetrocking it now. This next year I will move the compressor outside to keep it quiet. It already had plenty of 110 and a couple of 220 has phone and cable as well.

My shop has been a 13 year long project, and is still evolving...I'm not sure it'll ever be done. I have in my mind what I want it to end up being, but life just keeps getting in the way so to speak.
It started off at a 36x50 full concrete foundation, stick framed outbuilding built back in 2001. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3...otos0011-1.jpg The first couple of years while I was absorbing the initial build costs, it was basically a boat and yard equipment storage facility. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3...ragemahal5.jpg I did use spray in foam insulation and hung a 4 ton heat pump from the trusses to heat and cool the space. About 3 years ago now I guess I finally got to add a two post lift to the shop. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3...01116-1921.jpg Then I had to change things up and built an apartment in the back of the shop for my Dad to live in. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3...s/DSC01529.jpg I was able to put a loft up above the apartment to gain back some of the storage I lost by the addition. this picture was taken from up in the loft. What a mess... http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3...s/DSC01530.jpg I also had to move the lift back about 10 feet. did that project by myself without taking the lift apart. Yes, there were a couple of pucker moments...at one point my Dad went back into his apartment and said "I can't watch this". http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3...h/DSC01577.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3...h/DSC01578.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3...h/DSC01583.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3...h/DSC01582.jpg I now have a lot of pictures of stuff I'm working on in the shop, but none show much of the actual shop itself. It's actually pretty clean right now and will take some updated pictures of it in it's current form soon. What I'm struggling with now is finding and setting apart a "dirty work" space where I can put my welding, cutting and grinding tools and do my dirty work in to try to keep the rest of the shop halfway clean. The lift is a fantastic tool, I use it all the time. I don't think I'll ever be without one again. I need more cabinets to store away the parts and stuff I just can't part with and I need to pare down some of the yard equipment that I just don't use that much anymore to create more space. And lights...I need WAY more and better placed lights. Painting the walls white might help with light as well. Eventually I'll get it all set up like I want, but lately I've been doing more work in the shop...than on the shop...which is okay too. |
Nice shop! Funny how the amount of stuff you have expands to the space in which you have to store it in.
|
It looks great Lance.

Thanks... It has seen many iterations over the years...but I'm finally getting it to where it'll store my crap as well as provide a nice shop to get some work done in (judging by the number of friend and family requests to work on their stuff in there anywhere). |

Here's a couple picture of my ongoing garage project. It’s adjacent to my house and it’s 50’x100’ with (4) 12’x14’ roll up doors. There is also a parts mezzanine that sits on top of the cecilng for parts storage measures 12’x100’. Now I’m working organizing and outfitting the shop. The most recent addtions are the 2 post lift, compressor and air line plumbing as well as the 220 plugs for the welders.

Did a little more cleaning and straightening up out there today. had to snap some pics as I never know how long it'll stay this tidy.

My small one works very well, if I had more space it would be at least 30x48 - 36x60. http://photos.smugmug.com/photos/i-X...-XKvn8Fg-L.jpg |
Nice! Thanks for posting the pic.
I like the vice on the stand as well. I smell a winter project brewing up here. |

That's actually a tubing notcher but you could mount a vice. I built another smaller and lower table with a small vice that I also mount my shear on with c-clamps. http://photos.smugmug.com/photos/i-R...RvPdMcx-XL.jpg http://photos.smugmug.com/photos/i-R...RTX3rQT-XL.jpg |
I finally finished my crib stands up today. I've got a couple of projects planned for this winter that require the car to be sitting level and at ride height while I need to get under neath it, so I needed to get these ready first.
Since I plan on using mine mostly for chassis setup and measuring purposes, I needed to build them a bit differently than a lot of guys have. I wanted to have the tops of my stands flat so that the tires sat up on them, not down in them. This will aid in letting me get the car sitting on a perfectly flat and level plane while up in the air enough so that I can get under it and I'll be able to turn the front tires left and right to check caster and what not. Since I had an odd assortment of 2x4s and 2x6s on hand, I laid them out and cut them up to make these 18" long x 12" wide. Test stacked to make sure I cut them all right. https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-1...h684-no/13+-+1 After nailing them together, I measured the track width and wheelbase on my car and marked the floor exactly in the center of my lift posts. Then carefully measured exactly where the center of all 4 tires will sit and marked places on the floor with tape to represent where the stands will sit. This will show me where to park the car before lifting it with the lift to set on the stands. My floor is not level as the sides fall toward the center where the drain is, so I then needed to shim the bottom of the stands to get all four of them plum and level with each other. This took a while but I finally got them all flat and square. https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-g...h684-no/13+-+1 https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-o...h684-no/13+-+1 https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-7...h684-no/13+-+1 I marked the stands so I'll know how to put them back in place and I'll clean the floor up real good and remark the tape where they go, then I'll be able to store them out of the way then put them back in exactly the same spots so the car will have a flat level spot to sit on and I'll still be able to get underneath it to make setup changes and adjustments. I'll also be able to set scales on these for four corner weighing and slip plates under the front tires for alignment settings. I still have to rig up something to use for wheel chocks to keep the car from rolling and test place the car on them, but for the most part...they are ready to use. |
^^^ That leveling trick is a good idea. Thanks
|
Thanks, I had to scratch my head a bit when it came time to start leveling. It's hard because if you change the height of one, it changes everything else. I had to find the highest stand, get it leveled, then raise the rest up to it's level while keeping them plumb and square. I think the most one was raised was 1/4-3/8s" but they were all off a little bit.
I can roll that pipe over any two of the stands now and it stays flat on the tops of them all the way across. The hardest part might have been balancing that level on the round pipe for the photo opps though. :unibrow: |
