Jim
Glad to see you back at this. The belts look good. How much longer for the new wheels? |
How about making the bezels from brass so it's easier to chrome ?
Love this project !!!!! And the wheels are killer !   Jim |
Thanks Rob, as for the wheels I would guess a long time but I told them I was in no rush at all. Making a few design changes as well so waiting for some new drawings.
Jim, thanks and that is a good idea that I didn't think of though the machinist already started cutting the bezels from aluminum. At least it will be a few ounces lighter! |
Wow! This car is so cool. Keep up the great work and ideas:thumbsup:
|
Looking good Jim! Now that it's getting kinda of cold you should start to make some good progress?? Really nothing else to do
|
Jim,
Without question your car is the 'biggest' story on this site. :D http://i87.photobucket.com/albums/k1...ghamps2011.jpg Add another 1000 hp and Stielow would have no problem winning OPTIMA with it. :unibrow: |
Thanks guys, I -should- be making good progress but there is always other stuff to do.
It only looks big in the pics it's only 18ft long  Worked on the seat frame a bit more today. I know nothing about upholstery but the plan was to replace the coil spring pack with high density foam. http://imageshack.us/a/img339/7237/img2045hg.jpg http://imageshack.us/a/img547/7797/img2046p.jpg http://imageshack.us/a/img526/1694/img2047og.jpg http://imageshack.us/a/img11/6099/img2048hk.jpg http://imageshack.us/a/img525/972/img2049yj.jpg http://imageshack.us/a/img19/9643/img2050k.jpg |
For not knowing anything about upholstery -- it looks like you're doing a pretty good job to me!
 |
Thanks!
On to a bit more progress. Nothing exciting or performance related. Originally this car was equipped with rear heaters. Cores/fans mounted under the rear seats that blew through vents that were just under the leading edge of the seats. I decided that instead of having just rear heat why not heat and A/C. Up front with be a VA Gen IV unit with fresh air/recirc door (no pics of that yet). Rear is another VA unit designed to be trunk mount. I removed the original air return ducting from the unit (which curved up and forward) so I could build my own through a duct in the rear shelf. So, as far as the pics go, the center large duct is air inlet (this system is purely recirculating) and the smaller outboard rectangular holes will be the top vents. There will also be vents under the seats as pictured. I covered the vents on the rear shelf by a grill that matches those on the lower door panels. It sits in a steel frame that allows it to be flush mounted. http://imageshack.us/a/img268/4052/img2071h.jpg http://imageshack.us/a/img339/5226/img2072d.jpg http://imageshack.us/a/img507/4148/img2075p.jpg http://imageshack.us/a/img9/3585/img2077bz.jpg http://imageshack.us/a/img803/6805/img2078b.jpg http://imageshack.us/a/img252/3482/img2079ww.jpg http://imageshack.us/a/img824/8503/img2080kd.jpg |
Ok, some shiny stuff!
I received the gauges back from Shannon at Redline gauge works and they turned out amazing. Changes were, freshen up speedometer assembly and recalibrate for the new 160mph gauge face. (was 120, not quite good enough) All of the other gauges were replaced with Speedhut programmable gauges that have a warning light output. This is nice because it is all modern electronics and the gauges themselves will drive the original warning lights. (hard to see but they are little red Cadillac emblems in the gauge faces). Also, shift indicator pattern was changed to match the 4l80 transmission. Very happy with these!! http://imageshack.us/a/img843/2609/img2064pf.jpg http://imageshack.us/a/img824/3669/img2065wb.jpg http://imageshack.us/a/img69/3884/img2068e.jpg |
Awesome - I can see why you are happy with it.
I love refurbished and enhanced stock gauges, especially with traditional non-round layouts. I've got my hands full with my current and never complete project, but if I ever hit it big a nice Caddy build is definitely on the agenda. My dream is a '67 El Dorado. |
That dash is beautiful. The rear ac is a pretty cool touch. Are you going to do heated seats?
|
Nice!!! Looking great Jim!
|
This is just the neatest build! I'm enjoying reading about this project and the creativity used to retain the period looks is terrific!
|
Still my favorite build to date! :hail: :hail:
And that's cool Vintage Air makes a rear A/C unit. I have that rear a/c unit in my 62 Caddy Limo and might just swap it out for this unit. Keep up the good work! |
Subscribed. Not sure how I've managed to miss this one all this time. I watch all the cool builds and even some of the Camaro ones. :_paranoid
|
Jim,
At events with this beast, you're going to think your name is 'I call shotgun'...followed by 'I call back seat'.:unibrow: |
Thanks guys! And yeah, the back seat should be an alright place to be. I'm spending some time with it to make sure it will be nice for all but I think it's necessary being a 4-door.
So I mentioned the fresh air/recirc door I was working on for the front A/C unit. I think this will do, no chance of stale air in this ride :unibrow: Basically just a plenum that sandwich mounts between the blower motor and A/C box attached to a dodge ram fresh air door. Need to make a close-out panel and then route it up to the cowl. http://imageshack.us/a/img84/2894/photo14e.jpg http://imageshack.us/a/img715/2316/img2081tv.jpg http://imageshack.us/a/img51/7812/img2082ty.jpg http://imageshack.us/a/img543/2017/img2083u.jpg http://imageshack.us/a/img208/3387/img2084lv.jpg http://imageshack.us/a/img28/9241/img2085kv.jpg http://imageshack.us/a/img96/7127/img2086mc.jpg http://imageshack.us/a/img20/8028/img2090zq.jpg http://imageshack.us/a/img541/3117/img2092c.jpg http://imageshack.us/a/img825/9636/img2093p.jpg http://imageshack.us/a/img827/9518/img2094ua.jpg |
Good thinking and good design, most hot rodders don't bother with fresh air feed once they go A/C but I think its very important. Now go nuts and add a modern cabin air filter too !
|
Thanks and good call on the cabin filter. I'll see if I can get something into the air box on the firewall.
|
More boring A/C stuff. I made ports that pass through the floor. Tubes will connect to these from underneath the car and to the plenums for the under-seat vents.
I made the top vents to aim more towards the outside and up. Thought it would be good if the air was directed away from the center return duct. Of course when finished the ducting/vents will be black and there will be a black cloth/felt? material underneath the grill on all areas that aren't flowing air. http://imageshack.us/a/img11/5427/picture002tb.jpg http://imageshack.us/a/img571/6606/picture003rr.jpg http://imageshack.us/a/img89/2357/picture004dku.jpg http://imageshack.us/a/img705/5134/picture006tow.jpg http://imageshack.us/a/img15/25/picture007hx.jpg http://imageshack.us/a/img716/4479/picture009zz.jpg http://imageshack.us/a/img819/8600/picture010eu.jpg http://imageshack.us/a/img833/2812/picture012fd.jpg |
Nothing boring about that! Keep up the great work:thumbsup:
|
Cool stuff Jim:cool:
All the little detail stuff is what makes a build. Have you got the new wheel set yet? The day it's siting on the ground will be a big traffic day on this thread for sure.:D  |
That looks really good! Your doing great job
|
Thanks guys.
No new wheels yet, told them I was in no rush. I did pick up a few things for project cash incinerator. About 95% of the chrome and stainless parts were finished (I brought them some more) and I also bought all of the Mouton fur for the carpeting. http://imageshack.us/a/img715/792/img21971.jpg http://imageshack.us/a/img59/576/img21981.jpg http://imageshack.us/a/img203/1258/img21991.jpg http://imageshack.us/a/img842/1820/img22001.jpg http://imageshack.us/a/img812/6166/img22011.jpg http://imageshack.us/a/img801/280/img22021h.jpg |

Love this build!!! |
I want to lick your bumpers !
And roll naked on your carpet ! Sorry, but those parts just look that good ! I definitely don't want to see your chrome bill though. |
Rob, yeah it's a bit ridiculous. Probably take me 6 months just to put all that trim on.
Russ, thanks! I've never used Mouton in anything but it was originally an option on this car. Such as- http://farm1.staticflickr.com/174/43...22f82fb3_z.jpg |
Preston, haha you are cracking me up man :lmao:
Chrome bill, yeah :G-Dub: :G-Dub: :G-Dub: :G-Dub: :G-Dub: |
Been working on a few things here and there. First off, the original dash vents are just under the windshield and really don't work well. I filled those along with the ash trays on either side of the glove box (which also required work to fit well) and installed 3 vents from a 63 Cadillac.
The left and center vent are spaced exactly the same in relation to the instrument cluster. The outer vents are spaced exactly the same in relation to the outer edges of the dashboard. Also, the turbo manifolds I built started out as flipped 2010 Camaro manifolds. Well now the new ZL1 Camaro has stainles steel versions of those same manifolds so of course I had to rebuild them out of those. (work in progress). I recieved a new 8-rib drive system from Wegner's. Casey Wegner was nice enough to build this, (THANKS!!) as I needed a bigger Sanden compressor to run the dual a/c systems. And for some pics- http://imageshack.us/a/img16/1029/broughamdash2.jpg http://imageshack.us/a/img855/4323/broughamdash1.jpg http://imageshack.us/a/img547/2384/img2255o.jpg http://imageshack.us/a/img703/135/img2254k.jpg |
I realized I had a bit of a problem in that the rear wheels could not be installed/removed without dropping out the entire rear end. Reason being is the rotors proximity to the skirted rear fender. Nothing would fit between it.
The more I thought about this the more it bothered me so I knew it had to be fixed. Solution was upgrading to a GMR floater and moving the brakes as far inboard as possible. Also had to rotate caliper position so the top of the caliper was no higher than the top of the hub. This now gives me almost 11 inches between the rotor and the fender to install the 20x9 wheel and 255/45/20 PSS. Decided on 6-piston PBR calipers (C6Z) and Wilwood rotors. Donny at Frame-Up Wheel Works (dontlifttoshift) tackled this project for me and he was great to work with. Every aspect of his work, from track width, caliper position and modifications required to get the rotors to work with the calipers was absolutely spot on perfect. Thanks Donny!!! I had already built a 31 spline true-trac setup so I had to sell all that and put together a new one. Ended up with a strange iron housing, 35 spline S-trac and oem 3.50 gear. Should work out nicely!! http://imageshack.us/a/img401/7040/img2243i.jpg http://imageshack.us/a/img715/8072/img2245g.jpg http://imageshack.us/a/img708/3051/img2247xh.jpg http://imageshack.us/a/img33/9376/img2248qg.jpg http://imageshack.us/a/img812/8394/img2249c.jpg http://imageshack.us/a/img694/3205/img2250h.jpg http://imageshack.us/a/img27/1410/img2251k.jpg http://imageshack.us/a/img594/8379/img2252y.jpg http://imageshack.us/a/img822/280/img2253nz.jpg |
This car just keeps getting better. Probably costs more than my house but worth it.
Did you get those new wheels yet? |
Quote:
No wheels yet, good thing I won't need them for a few years :D |
This build floors me every time you post, definitely one of the coolest cars out there!
 |

Really like what you've done with the dash vents and manifolds. Very nice!

I love this car more than more own project.:bang: |

Got my new wheels!
http://imageshack.us/a/img823/9462/photo26dt.jpg http://imageshack.us/a/img202/5779/photohjx.jpg Actually I just had to roll it to the next spot over in the garage. When you have one project car that will never be finished, what's the logical thing to do? Get another one! Oh man, what the hell is wrong with me. http://imageshack.us/a/img829/1333/photo1wv.jpg |
