To be totally truthful, I'm not sure if I'm making this car better or worse. I'm half thinking of changing the body line down the center of the car.

Funny you should say that, I'm just figuring the mounts out right now which I will mount behind the quarter panels while they are off.

Great!

With the wheelbase extension the visual is "pinched" just a little between the bumper and wheelwell, not bad though and many would never notice unless in a side by side comparison. The wing may create visual balance and with less levered weight behind the rear axles the additional downforce might be appreciated. Besides my redneck logic the right wing and uprights could be a visual homerun with the current lines of the car..........and maybe a rear diffuser panel? :unibrow:

Royalworks 04-05-2013 04:30 PM

Since we are all throwing out design ideas I think it would be sweet if your raked the rear lower part of your quarter to match the height of your rocker.

57hemicuda 04-05-2013 05:04 PM

You guys do realize that the whole lower part of the quarter is an old Amx hood (because I wanted it to be the same color)that I cut up and bent over my knee, took seriously 2 minutes. Its held on with 1 zip screw, just so I could get an idea of what it would look like. The bottom of the quarter will be raked, the body lines will get cleaned up, and it will actually be tight to the sheet metal.

The only thing I think I'm really worried about is the front flare compared to the rear. It seems the long quarter really hid the amount of bulge that's there. There will be no hiding the front, big American bulges all the way.
Once I line the front end up this week, and get the camber where it needs to be the problem in the front will be seriously exaggerated. I'll get it, but hope it doesn't come off looking too cheesy.

We do now! Then why didn't you just make 5-6" taller and you'd already have the end plates for the diffuser! :D

You're as experimental as a kid with craft paper and a glue stick, I like that.

Royalworks 04-05-2013 06:51 PM

I had no idea. I thought you somehow put the quarter back together. I wasn't sure

57hemicuda 04-06-2013 05:02 AM

Because of how low the tank is, and where the exhaust will exit, I don't think I have the physical space for a rear diffuser. Both pipes will exit out the passenger side of the rear splash pan, with kind of a boom tube. The drivers side will have a belly pan on it, but I think the tank is just too low to come up with any kind of diffuser(they are cool though).

On the wing, while the quarters are off I plan on installing mounting plated that mount on the inside of the sail panel that goes down the quarter near the trunk lid.

This is gonna be one bad ride. It would be awesome if you could get LED lights all the way across the back.

57hemicuda 04-15-2013 05:21 AM

I just saw this while looking for some parts, thought the rear view was exactly the same as mine. Might have to buy it, (what am I 10)

You could put that on your motor when the hood is up and get one of those crying dolls to stand next to the front tire.

:lmao: One of those dolls strapped in the passenger seat might be funny

57hemicuda 04-16-2013 12:19 PM

You guys just made me remember why I hate car shows. Hell I can't get over the $165 price tag on the toy, I didn't pay that much for the car.LOL

57hemicuda 05-01-2013 03:03 PM

Just getting back to this car, started making the watts link mounts. Hard to believe I thought I was going to save weight, with the 1/8th" thick rear cover, and 3/16" mounts, I don't think this will be a feather weight. Still have a few gussets on the cover but its close.

Now that I have the rear mounted, I can run it over to the front end shop and get it lined up and the rear squared up so I can start roughing in the finished quarters.

57hemicuda 05-01-2013 05:33 PM

Yeah Scott, this car has been the biggest challenge I've ever had in the space department. With the fuel tank in place there is no place at all in the back of the car, I'm scrambling to find a place for the battery.

Please don't put the battery in the passenger seat Ron, I think that will be a busy place too
Watts link looks great.

What do you think about super small battery's they are building now.I wonder how long they will hold a good charge.

57hemicuda 05-02-2013 05:44 AM

I've wondered the same thing, I saw Jake cursing at the mini battery in his race car at VIR last year. I'll sneak an Optima red top in there somewhere.

57hemicuda 05-04-2013 04:48 PM

Finally got the ungodly awful 4x4 lift blocks out, which were locating the rear axle. Got the car to my buddy Troys front end shop for an alignment, and to square up the rear axle, got some strange stares taking it over there. It was pretty damn close for eye balling it, the quarters will be next on the list, can't wait to see how it turns out.

>can't wait to see how it turns out.

That's funny - that's how I feel when I start building something too. Some guys have to CAD something to perfection or have a picture perfect rendering done. I just stand and stare for several hours, hold up a few pieces of cardboard, and get to work. And I think to myself "this is going to be cool, I can't wait to see how it looks !". Like Michelangelo chipping away the extra stone until the sculpture was revealed.

57hemicuda 05-07-2013 02:02 PM

That's funny Preston. I remember Bob Johnson telling me when I first started working on the Mustang, that I was doing it all wrong. First you have to have rendering done, then an engineer needs to see if is doable, you have to stick to the rendering or you'll get way off track. I was like, hell I'll have the body shaped and tweeked several times before I have the time for all that.

zo6s10 06-02-2013 11:10 AM

I know there are updates.....

Ron, awesome build. Watching your builds make me want to get to started on mine.

Yeah, sometimes I just start building the car then get a rendering done and the engineer as I go. Ass backwards but it always works out.

I know Payton is going to bust my chops for working on this instead of my AMX, but I have been finishing up the floors in my old Dodge Power Wagon. They don't make anything for those old trucks so I had to fab everything from scratch. Winding up things on this truck, so I should get on this car soon.

Rick D 06-03-2013 09:07 PM

Come on Ron let see more POWER WAGON??? Sorry Payton :peepwall:

57hemicuda 06-04-2013 05:17 AM

I have a soft spot for old trucks. I have this 69 Dodge P/W that I put a EFI 5.7 hemi in, thing runs like a new truck, sets on a shortened 80's Dodge frame, Dana 60's front and back 727, and a 205 t/c. The cab was rotted pretty good, so I got a better one and am finishing up the floors in it before I switch them over. I also own a 40's P/W with an old school hemi. I really need a check up from the neck up!!

Got a few minutes to play with this thing. Quarters are at least somewhat shaped, the more I mess with this car the more awkward it seems, maybe I should leave it alone, NAH. I kind of think its taking the Ford Pinto shape only bigger.

Is it possible to slightly bulge the front fenders and give them the same wheel opening as the rears? That might tie it together. I see what your saying though, with as long as the front and door is, the rear just drops off. If the car had a spoiler like the Javilin, it could even out the lengths.

Ripped 06-15-2013 07:30 PM

If it was me, I might try and incorporate a slight javelin fender hump;
http://automotobounce.com/Amc/Amc-ja...ery.html?pic=2

maybe about 30-50% of what was in the later models, along with a full sheet metal stretch to wrap around the tire.

It might give you the ability to have a similar wheel opening front and back.

The spoiler on this page could look better with a little more 'artistic license'

http://www.tajavelin.com/history.html

maybe you could fabricate something along those lines

Rick D 06-15-2013 07:51 PM

Looking good Ron, maybe if you weren't working on so many projects at once you could finish one of them :headscratch: :underchair: :poke:

This stuff keeps falling into my lap, I haven't gone looking for one of these projects, hell I've been offered several that I turned down, but yeah I'm :drowninga: in it. Like I said before, I need a check up from the neck up!
