A mint, gum, toothpick, sunflower seeds, etc...

You need the mental strength to quit as well. Excercise and eating right will move you up a couple rungs upstairs. You have to want it and believe in it.

Another thing I was taught..You will do more for others than you will yourself.

You will quit for your kids, or your wife way before you will do it for yourself.

That is how people are wired..So if your kids or your family are the motivator, then do it for them..But we should be doing it for our life, but sometimes that isn't enough.

his chillie is awesome, I've been following Berardis work for about 10 years now, he's not right on everything, but following his advice is a good start

Lyle McDonald and Alan Aragon are good guys to listen to and are more scientifically based that Berardi, but Berardi makes things easy to follow and has a lot of hints to keep you following.

As you age you need to add muscle to fight the natural wastage, keep your waist trim as belly fat does nasty things to you, and keep active, sitting down is deadly :)

get some sleep, have some fun, and try and eat lots of protein and a mix of unmolested veg, fruit, nuts and unrefined carb sources. Keep your total calories to a level where you have enough energy to be active but not too much so as you get fat

don't be scared of fats, but try to get a range of sources, grass fed beef, wild salmon, game, organ meats have all sorts of good stuff in them, take 6g of fish oil every day, Unless you work outdoors half naked take 5000iu of vitamin d and a multivitamin.

Good Luck guys remember there are 3 important things, health, wealth and love get the balance right

I just got their sales pitch, is the course really worth it?

Nope, the recipe book is good but the course isn't worth the money, if you have a little willpower

good diet, some weights, some cycling/jogging and away you go.

one of the most interesting guys in the health and fitness world is Dan John

I only mentioned Berardi as it's fairly low nonsense stuff that would appeal to you guys. I'm not on the payroll.

Trouble with health and fitness is all of the misinformation out there

Enviroment

I'll give you two examples of changing your enviroment.

Two weeks ago Kelli and I drove a half hour out of town to the Marina for dinner and a few drinks. We have a great table with a view of the lake and mountains. Great enviroment, right? The bar tender has the news blaring througout the place. I stargted to get agitated. Did I really drive all the way out here for this garbage? I got up, popped 5 bucks in the jukebox and ask her if I could turn down the news. So, I went from a horrible experience to playing my favorite music and the news went down to 0 volume. We had a great time.

This morning, I have two community centers around a mile from my house. I hadn't tried the particular center I went to this morning. I walk in and start working out and the news is blaring. There are 6-8 people glued to the TV. I kick ass and work my ass off for .5 hour but it definitely effected my experience. Instead of leaving with my tail between my legs, I walked to the front desk and addressed the staff. "I'd like to make a suggestion." The news is blaring in the fitness facility and that's not the experience I'm looking for when I work out. I'm looking for a positive experience when I work out. How about you turn on a music channel from now on with upbeat music to create a better experience. It definitely motivated a staff member as she got out of her seat and was going to find the facility supervisor. I'm not sure I'll go back because I like the other place better, but I hope they change the ENVIROMENT for the folks that are regulars.

Clearly long term enviroment changes are more crucial but it's the little things in life the add up. You have the power to change your enviroment.

When you work out, find a place you like to go with a positive atmosphere. You want to enjoy the experience. If that's not possible, change it by making suggestions or tuning out the news with some head phones.

Thanks for the info Legend

I was 182 last night when I got on the scale before I went to bed and 178 this morning. Looks like I'm not really losing any weight since I've gone back to working out again but I know thats due to eating more than I was before.
I'm going to set my goal at a lean, mean 175. A little more muscle and a lot less belly fat.
Going riding today but kick it down to 10 miles. Then I'm going to visit the local gym and start weight training. Its 2 minutes away and only $30/month with no contract......gotta love that!
I think balance is key here......I like to ride for cardio and legs.....but I also want to work on chest, triceps, shoulders, back, and biceps. I may have to cut out my riding bike for leg workout day because adding the gym to my day is going to be putting another activity into my day.
When I weight trained in the past I did legs and shoulders on one day, back and biceps the next, and then chest and triceps the day after that and worked abs every day.
Wish me luck, I'm going to need it in order to stick with it.

I have always been of and on exercising and eating healthy so it constantly fluctuates between 10-15 lbs. i struggle with both exercise (lazy) and nutrition(im a foodie plus i cook pizza and greasy bar food every day!) but this past month Ive been really motivated to change as i totally agree with you that confidence is key and i truly feel thats whats holding me back from getting the shop out of its slump. i want to care but i just dont and i struggle with being positive and seeing light at the end of the tunnel.
but I feel getting healthy and feeling better about myself will really change that!

i really like the idea of a food journal too its will really make you accountable and responsible of what you eat! im gonna start

I'm not sure why this popped in my head.

What about offering a few new HEALTHY OPTIONS on your menu? It's seems to me like it's outside of the box in the Pizza business. Maybe a side salad or a pizza with whole wheat crust, fresh veggies, homemade sauce, etc.

I think this could have two very large compound effects.

1. It may attract a whole new client through your marketing. A more positive client with better health. People will normally pay more to eat healthy if they are in that mindset. Your junk food clients may start ordering the healthy option once in a while and improving their life and your bottom line.
2. It will give you a healthy option for YOURSELF while your at the shop. You eat less junk over time, lose weight, gain confidence.

I wouldn't get rid of your current menu. Add a few things for 6-12 months and see if you can ADD a better clientele.

Gaetano, I'm doing 5 or 6 days and I run one day, and do weights the next. I've been really happy with the results so far. It give your body the rest it needs.

as long as it's a different activity you can mix up things on the same day.

I'm shooting you guys a lot of links here, but I've been at this a long time and it helps to cut straight to the chase

For a strength/conditioning workout guide with all of the guesswork taken out, Jim Wendler is a good guy, no nonsense, no flim flam time wasting, just straight to the action. However if you are offended by foul language then he's not the guy for you.

http://store.jimwendler.com/ProductD...de=5312edebook

I'm about 210lb at 6 feet tall today at around 10% body fat

To help you log your workout http://www.fitocracy.com/ is great. My screenname on there is Rigante if you want to follow any of the workouts

I'd use a dressmaking tape measure to check your progress, waist measurement getting smaller is a good guide rather than scale weight

Today is the Day where having the Nordic track Treadmill in the air conditioning will help.

Going to be 102 today...A walk is out of the question..Last night at 11 pm, it was 80 plus...

So off to the treadmill today to keep up the routine..

Going to the store today...Buying healthy...

Last night Fish and green beans...

I got my bike ride down to one hour. I think if I keep my workouts to one hour a day and 6 days a week I should be good. Legs and shoulders one day, back and biceps another day, chest and triceps the third day, then restart the cycle. Plan is to workout first thing in the morning. Just getting started will be the hardest thing for me because I have a hard time getting to sleep early.

On another note, I hear you on the negativity on TV and in this world today. It feels like it has compounded five fold and I cant take it anymore either. I rarely watch TV if at all anymore.....only watch SPEED channel and wait to hear the weather on the news.

Legend, looks like you have some time and skills in this department and I dont have time to pop open those links right now but your involvement in this thread is truly appreciated.

Bucketlist2012 07-12-2012 11:18 AM

If for some reason you are time limited, you can do Legs, Chest, and then Triceps, and the next day do Back,Shoulders, Biceps...

Also as I mentioned, I used to do Cybergenics..

A lot of pre stretching and stretching after each set...30 seconds each body part.

It will increase your recovery time and prevent injury and stiff muscles...

I was 30 when I did it, and at 52, I must stretch to avoid problems..

Also a lot of super sets and starting heavy with low reps, and decreasing weight and increasing reps..

And the news ? Just turn it off...It will never change..Liars , whores, and thieves...Even a non election year..But now ? Negativity should have the news in the dictionary as a definition.

toy71camaro 07-12-2012 11:59 AM

Well i'll participate in the "what i ate" part... as i mentioned yesterday I would be trying to attempt fish with some sauteed squash/zucchini. Here is what I ended up with:

http://albertdphotography.zenfolio.c...98587422-3.jpg

Grilled Tilapia with Olive Oil and a Fish seasoning.
Sauteed squash/zucchini with low salt Pappys seasoning.
and a glass of Milk. According to MyFitnessPal, about 350 calories, and I was full. lol

I ate a lot yesterday (it felt like), but it was all healthy (yogurt, weight management oatmeal (higher in protien, fiber, etc), and grapes, then dinner). and I only ate like 1100 calories. MyFitnessPal scolded me for not eating atleast 1200, as I may be starving myself. heh.

edit... oh, and on the "negative news" part.. i cut cable when i moved in Feb. no TV except for netflix/hulu. And we mostly watch the kids shows/cartoons anyway, if we watch anything. But i quit watching the news years ago. I took a class in college about how negative it was, as human nature is drawn to that and all they want is "ratings"... so, no news for me. and very little TV. Im much happier w/o getting lost in the TV shows.. The GF is starting to miss it tho. lol

Bucketlist2012 07-12-2012 01:02 PM

Good for you Albert..

I will be going to the store today to buy some fruit, veggies, skinless chicken and fish..

Too hot for outdoors, so 22 minutes and one mile on the treadmill today..

I have one of those Gazzelle machine's..I will get on that tomorrow..

I am dead serious about getting healthy..It has been 2 years since my Major Heart Infection, and Stroke/Seizures..

I am going to beat this crap and get healthy enough to get my car to some events...I win just by showing up..

Autocross first...No experience, and no roll bar keeps me from the big tracks yet..

I need to take a Jim Russell class at Infineon first..

More accountability soon...And no news channels..

legend 07-12-2012 01:21 PM

great to see you guys taking it seriously :D

dinner tonight

steak with garlic and a little organic butter, wrapped in foil and cooked in the oven with mushrooms, green pepper and an avocado

absolutely full to the gunwales

Nice looking dish Albert.

Mike , looks like this thread has you motivated

Signed up for the gym today. It's been many, many years since I have worked out with barbells and weights but I have a great workout program that I will never forget.
Price turned out to be $39.95/month with no contract and an additional $19.95 for the access key. Gym is open 24/7. I told him I wouldn't be starting till tomorrow so I could stretch the month out an extra day and he said he wouldn't charge me for the rest of this month and billing will start first of August. Very solid dude and the place seemed real down to earth. We'll see.

Bucketlist2012 07-12-2012 01:29 PM

Thanks Legend. Thanks Gaetano.

I have had a seriously rough road the last two years..Forced to retire due to my Medical problems..Weak from medication for seizures..

This is the rest of my Life, right now, on borrowed time..

So hell yes, I am serious..I have to work up the heart and stamina before any real weight training.

Sit ups and Push ups and dips for now..Then the body sculpting begins..

I did it with Cybergenics 22 years ago, so i know what to do...

Big baby steps..And for sure shrugging off the negativity...It hangs with you after you almost die and take over a year to recover..It is a whole new life.

I got the skills and the attitude, and I thank you guys and especially Todd for waking up my Rumplestilskin A$$..

GrabberGT 07-12-2012 02:32 PM

Well. Im caught up now. (Nice thread)

I've been trying to get healthy again for the last 3 years. Many years ago, a neighbor introduced me to biking. I'm 5'11", weighed 235 and new I need to do something so I gave it a shot. My first goal was to do the Hotter than Hell 100 bike ride. After a couple months I had lost a little weight. Not very motivated, I did it anyway. The Hotter than Hell kicked my butt. I had never pushed myself into soo much pain before. Took me all day to do it. But the kudos and support I got from doing it motivated me though. I vowed I would return the next year and do better. So I spent a year riding and getting used to it. The weight started to fall off. I told myself that when I hit 190 I'd be happy. I was wrong. Next was 180. I kept getting faster and faster. I no longer ate anything that would hamper my ride for the next day. I joined a racing team and rode on avg 8000 miles a year for the next 3 years. I got my weight down to a 155 race weight, was ripped and in the best shape of my life. I was now RACING the Hotter than Hell rather than narrowly surviving it. My time was down to a hair over 4 hrs.

Somewhere along the way though I got lost. Got married, Kid, Work, Car hobby... I've spent the last 5 years putting the weight back on. This year Im 38 and I've hit 200 again. My biggest problems are eating and drinking. I dont have to tell you what over indulging will do to scheduled morning workouts for the next day or 2. I love to eat and just about everything is good with a Martini, better with 2 and just orgasmic with 3. The other problem is the car. Beer and working in the hot garage just seems to go together. I'd skip the morning ride to beat the heat in the garage and then spend the entire afternoon drinking beer to cool down and deal with the stress of parts not working out.

A couple months ago I started biking to work again and watching my eating and drinking. Im now down 15 lbs. I get to ride ~150 miles a week now and am seeing the weight start to come off. (Yes slowly coming off as I have struggled with my vices) The goal is to get down to 170 and start adding in some weight training. I hate being in the gym. It just feels stuffy and lifting doesnt excite me one bit. I long to draft off unsuspecting SUV's, put the hurt on my riding companions and sprint for the county line signs on Saturday mornings. But lifting to add muscle mass and watching my eating and drinking is likely the answer to keeping the weight off. More muscle mass means more calories are burned thru regular activity rather than relying solely on cardio as I did before.

Thanks for getting this thread started. I look forward to the added motivation from reading it daily.

I started my change 5 years ago . 45 years old 329 pounds:wow: I knew if I kept eating the way I did I wasn't long for this planet. So after 5 years (I'm 50 now:faint: ) this September I have lost 112 pounds and I have to tell you it really wasn't that hard!! So here it is and mind you I'm as lazy as they come for any exercise. I started walking one half hour a day on the tread mill every day for the first 6 months. This was a simple half hour walk after the first 6 months I started a varied walk/jog again only one half hour but I took Sundays off. I'm now to a point where I use the tread mill in the winter months and walk outside during the summer months. I'm up to 5 miles per day with a varied run /walk,still only taking one day off a week. One thing that kept me going through all of this was I would tell myself ''ITS ONLY ONE HALF HOUR A DAY'' if I could sit my fat azz down and watch tv why not do it while on the tread mill. Whats a half hour out of your life. At the same time I started doing the tread mill I started something else,I would not eat anything past 6pm anything!!! I have been married 25 years my wife and I work 100 hours a week each till this day. But for the first 20 years our dinners were hardly ever home always out and always at around 730/8 at night ,come home shower and get ready to do it again the next day. 20 years of that adds up. This one thing alone is huge I have to tell you!! I also cut down on the bad things . Noticed how I said cut down not stop. Well through all this I really never cut out the things I like. I still have pizza ,I'll grab a coke every now and then, pasta, ice cream nothing really changed for me that way. But I do eat alot more fish ,not much red meat anymore, I'm not a big drinker but if I drink beer its lite, and started to drink more wine also. At the end of the day it was a change for me but really wasn't that bad . Remember we are creatures of habit just change your habit and you'll be amazed at the results!
One last thing. I have neighbor that was over weight by about 190 pounds three years ago. He has lost 105 pounds as of today doing the same exact thing

Good for you Mario. Keep at it man! I'm not letting you off the hook though. NOBODY should be working 100 hours a week. You need to hire someone to cut that down to 50 max. Other people are capable of doing portions of your job, believe me. They just need mentored and trained. They may even do it better than you. Life it to short, hire someone and spend those hours LIVING.

I drank at Columbus at the hotel each night and that was enuf till the next show in Louisville at the end of the month. I'm a caffeine junkie. Mountain Dew is my choice and I started to only have one in the morning and water the rest of the day.

I don't want to sound arrogant, I have other areas of my life that need work (like going through a nasty divorce) that some of you hopefully don't have to deal with. All these stories really motivate me to stay focused on the goal and what's important. So, just wanted to say thanks to everyone that's shared and keep up the great work everyone and don't forget, you will only ever achieve what you can visualize in your own mind so think BIG!.

Now, I'm going to go find a health and diet forum and start a thread about building a pro-touring car!

LMAO...It is amazing that this site has these threads..

I talked on other car threads about Investing, and most people did not want to hear it..Like I was invading their space and I was bragging ...

The few guys that are cool, I told them to come here where the people are way cooler to be around...One has, and the other will soon..

I only talk car stuff on some sites..here I forgot we talk about cars...:willy:

So we are a ProTouring Investment , Health site..

Goals

The MAJOR reason for setting goals is to compel you to become the person it takes to achieve them. -- Jim Rohn

Think about that for a minute. How can you become a better person and improve your life if you don't have goals that motivate you?

Your life will change only when you change--Jim Rohn

Goal setting is not a one time task with the results set in concrete. Instead, it's a continous, lifelong process.--Jim Rohn

Once you achieve a goal, you must maintain that goal and set an additional goal to fuel the fire.

Guys, write them down. We've been talking about tracking your diet, finances, etc. everyday of your life. It really is amazing what you can achieve when you hold yourself accountable and can see the results and finish line.

I need another .7 of a pound and I'm to my goal weight. 183.2 this morning. I think I'll just blow right past that goal.

Todd that is in the works as we speak!

Wierd advice, but wise. I took it. Moderation is the key here.

Mario, major congrats!!! what are you down to if you dont mind me asking?

115 pounds... Moderation is the key no question! Through all this I never really gave up anything just cut it back. Instead of 10 slices of pizza cut it to 3. Funny thing is as you do this over time you will only eat three and thats enough. Its like reprograming you body.

I forgot to weigh myself first thing this morning but after eating breakfast and getting back from the gym I am at 180 lbs. Not sure this weight counts as I like to use the weight that I am when I first get out of bed for reference. Goal is 175 but that could change if I still see belly fat.

Had a good first experience at the gym and made 4 new friends. Also saw and talked to one of the dads from my boys wrestling team. He is an auto glass installer and is the one that helped me install my rear lexan so I got the opportunity to talk cars which was very cool.

Get Healthy..

You want to spend money like crazy ? Be unhealthy...

I just dropped 1600 Dollars on my portion of an emergency room visit...

Then they wanted tests of my heart and my Brain again..

1500 more dollars....

I have Insurance, and this is just my portion, in just 2 months...

So how much could I have done on my car for 3 grand ???!!!!!!

Probably finished the Interior..

I have blown what amounts to a ZR-1 engine and tranny upgrade on Medical, this year alone..

Just to give you some more motivation...:lateral:

I had a bad day yesterday...due to schedule, no exercise, and bad lunch (fast food), and dinner was suchi.

Funny thing, I had to scarf dinner down due to schedule, and ate my "normal" amount, quickly, and then proceeded with our things to do. After about an hour I realized I was stuffed. I have to realize my new "normal" is smaller than it use to be.

Back on track today, had a yogart and apple for breakfast, small amount of chicken salad, grapes, and 1 piece of turkey jerkey for lunch.

Also down to 1-2 diet Cokes a day, with more water.

Taking the day easy today... Long ride tomorrow (80 miles) and recovery ride (30 miles) on Sunday. I got my drink on last night so Im already done for the weekend.

I wonder if I'll find time to get something done on the car this weekend.

i've got my first marathon coming up in november. Even though I have a solid base of running (25-30miles a week) I am starting basically at ground zero of a marathon training plan. So tomorrow I am only going to run 8 or 9 miles followed by 3 with the wife on sunday. Fridays are my day off and I do nothing. I run 4-5 days a week and lift 2-3 days.

These are great points Todd. I would also add that it's important for goals to be time based and measureable. Lets say you want to lose weight and get in better shape

Bad goal structure: "I want to lose some weight and make it to the gym when I can"

Good goal structure: "I will weigh xxx by (insert date) and will spend one hour in the gym 4 times a week, or be able to jog a mile in xx minutes by (insert date).

Only if they're measureable are you able to track your progress and even know if you've reached the goal. I've done it both ways and when there's a number out there for me to hit I work twice as hard. Same thing if I'm competing for a similar goal with a friend of mine, I HATE to lose.

Another good point is the brain is wired in a way that you will always find the answers..

You must ask the right questions...Never use the word "why"..

As in , "Why can't I lose weight ? " , or " Why am I fat ? ", you will only come up with REASONS, and not ANSWERS..

I would use the word "How".

"How am I going to lose weight ? ", or "How am I going to get healthy ? "

"Why" just gives us a reason to cop out.. "How " will give us the answers..

Just my thoughts..

Gained a pound when I checked the scale this morning. I was 179 but I ate alot yesterday and last night. Had a steak and spinach salad at about 3:30 p.m. and then took the boys to Sun Splash(water slide theme park) Got home at around 8:30 p.m. and bbq'd burgers. Had 3 large slices of pizza and one burger. Yeah, I know, too much, too late at night but I was hungry.

Had a scrambled egg sandwich and a protein drink this morning and then hit the gym. Worked back and bicep muscles this morning along with my last workout which is always abs.

I am a little sore but not to sore and it feels good. Already starting to see a little definition but the gut is still there. :)
