Steve the car looks great and keep posting pics as it keeps us all motivated.

Goosesdad 09-26-2016 09:44 AM

Looks great! Hard to understand the hood/fender issue. Can only assume the molds started with factory parts, so that much of a difference in the joints seems like it came from the hood warping after it was removed from the mold?? Assuming you are painting the hood, it could be fixed with some cuttin' and glass'n. Feeling your pain!! Engine looks sweet!

Thanks Marty, I'll keep trying to post progress pics, it seems like we're barely making any headway!! :bang:

Hi John I should have posted a little more info, the hood fitment is not as big of an issue as the picture makes it look. The top and bottom halves have not been bonded together yet and it's pretty easy to pull the "corners" down into position. I'm using Aerocatch supprorts at the corners and that should work well. The nose piece, that's another story :confused18:

Carbon body panels are always a hassle to fit but are so worth it once they are!

tpichevy 09-26-2017 10:53 PM

Any new news on this awesome build!!?

slenning 11-23-2017 07:22 PM

Well I suppose I'm due for an update :buttkick: Just about the time I made my last post the metal work was pretty well done on the car but I was waiting for the flush mount glass from Fesler to be available. I decided to take the car back to my shop and work on getting everything done that I could while we waited.
I built the exhaust
http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/640...922/mD2u57.jpg
http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/640...922/KhZ87Y.jpg
I took some clamps and drilled 4 holes in them to allow us to tack the pipe up once we were satisfied with the fit
http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/640...922/v27ofs.jpg
http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/640...923/It8brb.jpg
http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/640...922/0en5t2.jpg
The only dual black set of tips I could find was this Corsa set for a late model Mustang. They're made staggered but we just had to cut a few stitch welds, cut the pipe off about a 1/2" and slide the tip back
http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/640...922/Irk9OF.jpg
http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/640...922/GGK3GH.jpg
Taylor cut these on the waterjet to hang the tailpipes.
http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/640...922/DGWMH7.jpg
I also got all of the brake lines and fuel line fabricated and mounted. Taylor cut these to mount them.
http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/640...923/Mx09eW.jpg

I got all of the suspension installed and got it back on the ground for the first time in a while (too long).

http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/640...924/QdRmRe.jpg
http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/640...924/T5KioW.jpg
http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/640...923/1pNw3O.jpg

slenning 11-23-2017 07:27 PM

I also got around to finishing mocking up the dash
http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/640...924/jjSyCN.jpg
http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/640...924/9kmYlI.jpg

The Fesler glass showed up!!!!
The windshield fit very well
http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/640...923/k8Y0Ao.jpg
http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/640...924/TnSJ6C.jpg
The rear window not so much, but only by the quarters and after replacing and stretching them that wasn't too surprising
http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/640...922/aiCoz5.jpg

MtotheIKEo 11-23-2017 08:53 PM

Looking great. I like the exhaust clamp for tacking idea. Might have to steal that one.

WSSix 11-24-2017 05:01 PM

Looks mean sitting on the ground, Steve. Congrats on making that milestone.

glassman 11-25-2017 08:24 AM

Awesome as usual.

PM me regarding the back glass, i've got some suggestions if you do not want to go back to metal work. I did my own flush mount kit and have some data on the rear.

Can't wait to see it done.

Thanks, yeah the clamps worked real well especially when some of the pipes weren't perfectly round, mostly when cutting the elbows. Oh and I'm pretty sure I stole that idea from someone else :P

Thanks Trey! Those pics are actually from last November/December! I've got a lot of posting to get caught up on.
The work was going so slow earlier this year at the body shop I was starting to lose interest

Thanks Mike, all of the metal work has been done for quite a while.

slenning 11-25-2017 11:35 AM

I should have explained better when the pics I posted were taken!! I received the Fesler glass in late November IIRC. I had the exhaust, brake and fuel lines done by the time the glass showed up. I got the IIMuch vents mounted and plumbed, and some other miscellaneous stuff done and the car went back to the body shop in early Feb. Also decided I didn't like the cowl area and stole an idea from John (Goosesdad)!! Thanks buddy!
http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/640...923/SEDzVm.jpg
http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/640...923/aabNiJ.jpg
Much better!!
The guy that was doing all of the carbon fiber fitting and glass work had a serious medical issue and missed a few months of work.
Random shots from the body shop mid summer

http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/640...922/TU4YC4.jpg
http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/640...923/GmI3Kg.jpg
Then the shop moved into a new building first part of August.http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/640...923/g7x8k9.jpg
http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/640...922/qroHAp.jpg

slenning 11-25-2017 11:54 AM

I'd been trying to decide if I wanted to do some kind of venting in the hood. I liked the vent in the Z28 so much I bought one , got up the nerve to cut a hole in the hood we had already spent a ton of time getting to fit :hairpullout: and.........
http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/640...924/HXYNRn.jpg
Made a cardboard pattern for a retainer to fasten the vent down from the underside, cut the actual piece out of 1/8 aluminum and rolled it to match the shape of the hood.
http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/640...923/U4E8vv.jpg
I decided I wanted to use Anvil inner fenderwells but they didn't fit the stretched fenders too well
http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/640...924/9x1Aj0.jpg
So we cut the outer third or so off and rebuilt them with fiberglass to fit the fenders.
Cardboard backer in place
http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/640...922/alxJL4.jpg
Cardboard ground away and adding more fiberglass
http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/640...924/Kd8CX3.jpg
Finished product, painted the fiberglass areas black and then matte clear over everything.
http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/640...922/WWkrLS.jpg
http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/640...924/jcQk8i.jpg
We got some of the clear primer that Ringbrothers talked about in their carbon fiber video series and shot the hood and nose. Works very well for filling in pinholes and wet sanding the entire surface
http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/640...923/k6mYei.jpg
http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/640...922/7bjrIE.jpg
Here's a shot of the bottom of the hood, had a lot of work to do on the outer area so painted that black, left the center carbon and then matte clear again over all of it

I had the pattern for the cutout made and taped to the hood and was still trying to decide if I had the guts (or the balls, lol) to do it. My boys were saying they weren't sure and then I sent pics to Randy Johnson (D&Z Customs). In his words "Just do it, it's only carbon fiber" :superhack:
