Thanks guys. I made a little progress taking out the old front suspension.

One of the best parts of working on my car is doing so with my son. He helped me build some crates for the rear.

Now the car is technically sitting on all four tires for the first time in years!

The car is lookiing good, so are those crates, Send him to my house I could use a set. You guys are doing a great job.
Everytime my grandson comes to the house he has to check out Vavoo's car to see if I'm doing enough. He's my little inspector. Too bad he's only 3 I could use him in those tight little spots ........... What dimensions did you make the crates? |
Thanks Wayne. The crates are 12" wide by 23 1/2" long.

Pretty pumped I am ordering the Fitech Meanstreet 8 tomorrow!
|
That stance is really mean looking. The perfect amount of drop in our opinion!

64s my favorite Malibu model.
Great job |
Bare in mind the front will have coilovers but I still wanna get an idea of where it's going to sit so I put it together anyway. Here's the before and after

Sweet! How much clearance do you have with the inner fender?
|
Zoomin, the clearance to the fender well is good, I am more concerned with the oil pan and cross member. The good news is when I put the coil overs in if it is an issue I can raise it up a little bit.
|
I was hoping the huge disk brake trend ends before I am done so I can save a little money and just run it with rear drums. LOL

Nice clean looking setup.

Ahh man, I got a Booo! LOL. I've ordered up the fuel lines and I'm waiting on some electrical stuff and hopefully I can fire this thing up soon.
|
Really great job with everything!
Can't wait to see it on the ground at your finished ride height. |

I've got a FiTech unit too, but haven't hooked it up yet. Can't wait to test it out. |
Haha, I agree about the LS engines so here's my stance on it.
A.. I have two healthy big blocks that are done and have a lot of money tied up into them so it really doesn't make a whole lot of sense for me at this point to do an LS swap. My second motor is a beast at over 700 HP on pump gas! B.. At this point it's better for me to finish my build and try to set up for an LS swap down the road if I am unhappy with the motors I have or as they die...LOL, I'm not easy on motors so in all reality I just need to start preparing for that day in advance. C.. I am happy setting the car up with this type of fuel injection for now knowing that I'll have parts in the car like the fuel injection tank, fuel system, and transmission that will easily adapt to an LS down the road. I have also thought about doing the swap using a carbureted intake and the FITech if I wanted. In all reality now that I have the T56, the fuel system, the FITech, I am thinking a swap will be relatively painless. I am also very excited to get the car running with all the improvements I have made so I have an idea of what I like and would like to improve on. All in all, I am very partial to traditional small blocks and big blocks in old Chevy's. I am also very open to the thought of doing an LS swap. You simply can't ignore their reliability and performance. There's no doubt in my mind I will do an LS swap in the future. For now, my focus is getting the car back on the road and enjoying it. |
I look forward to your thoughts on the FITech. I'm eyeing one of their systems for a stroked small block mopar engine I'm building.
Thanks! |
SBDave, thanks me too! It really cant be beat when you compare the competition. It looks like Holley just came out with an exact replica of the FITech platform. I found that interesting.

NEED HELP!!!!!! Red or black calipers?????????
|
I think the black with red lettering would look cool on your car.

I agree with the Black with Red letters. Who's kit are you considering? I did the kit from Kore3 and paired it with a DSE brake booster Sbd the car stops as good as my 2010 Camaro. ps I did an LS swap with a 700r4 and a carb and I live that your doing a big block as nothing sounds better then a raspy big block. |
Just beautiful love how your doing it step by step. Keep the pics coming.
|
Wow, see that's why I love this site. I would have never thought of the black calipers with red lettering. I love it! I think that's subtle and cool all in one. It'll add just enough detail to catch the eye. I am going with Kore3 brakes.
|
Great project you have going. I just signed back into this site to get motivation. my 65 is at the shop now and getting a lot of rust cut out and will receive a lot of attention starting in a couple weeks. I'll start a thread for it soon. Mine has been sitting miserably for about 8 years now.
Keep up the great work! and thank you for helping me get motivated! :G-Dub: |
Been away from the site for a few months . Wow your car is really coming together nice .
|
Thanks guys! It motivates me getting feedback and all the compliments for sure! I knew if I started a thread I would have to keep the progress and pics coming to keep the thread going and by keeping it going I've met new friends and sparked up new conversations with old ones. On top of that a couple of my buddies just bought new hot rods and it's giving me even more motivation to get this thing going again. Now if I could just come up with a bunch of money and all the other things in my life can be paused I'd be in great shape. LOL

I haven't decided how I'm going to paint the calipers yet. Part of me kinda likes the raw look but I also think if I powder them gloss black and paint the lettering red they'll look cool. I even thought of smoothing them out first and having some Chevelle decals made

That looks great! they are clean looking calipers for sure

I got my front coilovers in tonight. I'm very happy they fit great. With the adjustment collar just loose enough to not have any spring tension the car sits really nice but realistically an inch too low. That's perfect! I can lower it a little extra for shows and such and lift it up an inch or so when it's cruising time. That's exactly what I wanted.

I'm not so happy with the rear though. I think the shock is too long. I have the adjustment collar all the way to the end and the car could still go a little lower. In this position the spring falls out of the upper collar if I jack up the car. I'm pretty sure I am going to need a shorter shock! Any thoughts? Here's a pic at it's current setting.

Very nice looking bracket for the rear shock. Gotta drive the car and massage the coil overs a bit then dial them in a little at a time till your satisfied. Looks great!
|
The brakes look good on there.

What it most important is the travel of the shock when its at ride height. If its a 4.1", you want to be close to the center of stroke so ~2" or so either way. Definitely don't want to bottom it out on compression. If you have enough shock travel at ride height, you can get shorter springs. This will move the spring perch up to allow more adjustment (if you have shock travel of course) They can and will pop out when you raise the car. Not really a big deal as long as they seat back properly when loaded. My rears do that now since going to a high spring rate. I just reach up there and feel with my hand if the spring seated properly when letting it down. The right way to fix it is move the shock mounts further apart...I know, not as easy. |
