Powder coating
Thanks Wayne
OK... for those of you that may be interested in powder coating at home I've always wanted to powder coat stuff myself as I'm fed up with taking parts to my local guy and spending a small fortune and waiting for the sh!t to get done. So I made a little investment .... Eastwood starter Kit ... $165 5 more lbs of powder ... like $70.00 Nice oven off Kijiji ... $150 Panel breaker/electrical ... $60.00 Total ... Under $500.00 Result ... awesome !!! This was so easy, should have done this a long time ago but I was a little intimidated. Kit has it all, bag of plugs, heat safe tape, hanging wire etc. http://i264.photobucket.com/albums/i...psuckpnhcn.jpg http://i264.photobucket.com/albums/i...pstimrchui.jpg http://i264.photobucket.com/albums/i...psze4l1bem.jpg Approx 13 mins at 450 degrees until it flows, then 20 mins at 400 deg. to cure http://i264.photobucket.com/albums/i...ps5a5s9emh.jpg |
Nice.

Steve,
It doesn't matter what the Toyota guys think! Man, this is going to be as nice as the '69 I bet. Love watching you do your stuff. The pic of the powder coating looks like it turned out really well. The place I used to work powder coated their valve bodies. They shot peened the parts, dipped them into a water thin primer and put them into a 450 degree oven. They came out of the oven and we used what is called a fluidized bed for the powder. This consisted of a tank about 2' square. Under the bed of powder was a membrane that let air from a blower lift the powder and go all through the powder. not enough air to cause a dust storm but after turning it on the bed of powder would lift about 1". You could run your hand through it and never feel the powder. The hot valve bodies were hand dipped into the powder for a set amount of time and put on a rack to cool. Very nice process, but we only did one color... semi black. Do you think the Eastwood products are going to hold up? I'm really interested in this too. I've seen it for years but was a bit apprehensive. Very nice job on the FJ so far.. |

nice work buddy ... one question .... how many welding machines do you need ? I see 3 lol . also I decided your wife must not like you , you put car parts in the house ,spend tons of money and, spend too much time with these projects lol . OR she really loves you and knows theres no hope hmmm:poke:

LMAO ... Ryan, my buddies shop up the street we have my TIG welder there, his regular welder, the stick and the plasma cutter.
And yes, thats why we have 4 dogs to keep her busy while I'm off playing with cars !! I 'think' she still loves me ... but I did promise her that I'd take a break after these 2 FJ's are done ... :lmao: Steve |

*alert* *alert*
The build is coming along nicely!
But.... One thing I noticed that truly alarmed me is that the ports on your steering gear are wide open, inviting a disaster that could even destroy our brake assist unit. This is a classic fubar that even the highly regarded mega high end pro builders make. Any tiny little fleck of debris can get in there without notice, possibly causing the PS pump to then self destruct, then ruining everything else in the PS system. Have you ever blown a torque converter or front pump before? poisoning the whole trans with pulverized metals almost to the point of no repair? If the PS pump self destructs, it will wreck the entire PS system the same way... Sooooo..... Pretty please? Purty please with sugar on top? Tape or plug the ports shut on your steering gear - it sent chills right up my spine when I was checking out your build progress. Help! I cannot watch! :bitchslap:  |
Steering Gear
Got it Paul ... will tape up today
Thanks for the heads up !! Cheers Steve |
Getting there ....
Just sorting out some items, but she's been scheduled for paint in 2 weeks
