Ditto on the Summit shipping deal. Between no sales tax in Nevada and my proximity to Reno (next day free), I can say that Summit is my favorite store in the world. I feel a need to visit them in person once or twice a year, just to show I care.

As for the tune, given your engine setup, I can strongly recommend, as an extreme amateur with HPTuners, a stock 2010-11 Corvette Zr1 tune (for a baseline, not forever). It got me running and driving instantly (not necessarily safely--the timing advance levels are crazy in the stock zr1 tune) after a (LS9) cam, injectors (Deka 80s), and turbo on my 5.3. Converting to speed density was pretty easy, but finding accurate injector data was a chore (but done). Success here may of course depend on your cam and injector choices . . .

Here's to happy predictability!:gitrdun:

I ordered in 2 fitting from my local speed shop last Wednesday for delivery Thursday, friday morning at the latest, stopped by friday night they have no idea what happened to them. They reordered on Friday, would be in Friday night no questions, stopped by Saturday morning.....we have no idea where they are or what happened. If I had ordered from Summit it would have been at my door on Thursday or Friday at the latest currently still waiting on them =) I try my best to order stuff locally but its getting harder and harder.

I am learning a lot about tuning but my buddy Ron is going to be the tuner on this one, he has tuned hundreds of cars and has a great skill set for this stuff as he really cares about things like hot start and driveability. Once we pulled the stock tune out, we compared the Cadillac tune with the truck tune and made changes between the two to end up with what was eventually loaded. Great pointers though man thanks for keeping an eye on the build and always giving some great input.

This is a total budget build for this site but I like you guys so I keep it going, I know it doesnt really fit the mold.

Its been insane dude, Thanks for the props I hope to get the chance to come down and run with you guys at least a few times this summer.

Didnt have much time to work on this turd over the weekend but did manager a few pretty nice steps of progress.

Hooked up power for the first time and no smoke so that was good.

Added Oil to the engine and it didnt all leak out of it.

http://i1133.photobucket.com/albums/...ps6ipeqmj4.jpg

We were able to turn the key on and check for things like fuel pump operation.....verified with a light not running the pump yet.

So we hooked up the computer and pulled the stock tune from it and Ron got to work building a tune and had the first one back to me on Sunday morning, I bought some credits for the first time, loaded a tune and checked a few things, throttle pedal operates, and gave her the gusto, she even cranked over!!!!!

I have a few things left to button up on the evap system from Mighty Mouse and still need to add fuel and check for leaks but should be able to test fire it on Wednesday night or Thursday of this week I am out of town all week until then.

I managed to pick up some seats from Rvolvo Asher that were damn close to what I was looking for yesterday after I chopped off some volvo axle brackets for him. Seats are a great fit in the car. It took a little work to fab up some brackets but they are pretty low profile and look great. Need some cleanup and powdercoat now.

http://i1133.photobucket.com/albums/...ps56up2vlb.jpg

http://i1133.photobucket.com/albums/...pslgyntxgq.jpg

http://i1133.photobucket.com/albums/...psywg4uiv5.jpg

I dropped them off at the upholstery shop yesterday and they are getting redone in dark brown leather with black double french stitch on the outers, black stitching on the center pleats and a small black embroidered RECARO logo where the plastic logo resides now. Adan has done all of my other seats and does a killer job.

I hope to keep progress on adding fluids and starting to nut and bolt things. Waiting on steering arms from Ben @ Kaplhenke Racing now to button up the front end.

hackster 12-11-2018 09:24 AM

New Carpet is ordered, floor mats and 3 yards of extra in case the rear seat gets deleted.

New window scrapers inner and outer are ordered from Dave Barton.

Fittings should be waiting for me when I get home tonight to finish the evap/mighty mouse catch can setup.

I drive a lot for work, been going back and forth to Bend, Eugene and Portland at least once a week for the past month and a half and we finally got some snow, so on my route yesterday I was messing around up in the snow to come across this BMW sideways stuck off the road and it was stuck......Toyota to the Rescue. Someone would have run across her soon enough but it was a fun little adventure. All I had was my tube bender handle to dig and a cheap ass harbor freight ratchet strap but I got her out and down a few miles to safety.

http://i1133.photobucket.com/albums/...ps1ynwjxua.jpg

And an honorable to mention to TOYOTA. I bought this thing a year ago its a base model, 4 cylinder with a 5 speed that I tossed the TRD suspension, flares and wheels and tires on (All takeoffs with less than 100 miles for $800.00) Although its gutless on hills its been without a doubt the most solid built and reliable car I have ever owned. Believe it or not, the electonic limited slip works suprisingly well. 1 year and 25,000 miles.

http://i1133.photobucket.com/albums/...psqotgifqp.jpg

I had chatted with a couple friends who happen to have a full CNC machine shop at their house about a crazy idea a few weeks ago. When Scott said he was up for it I was super stoked but I had no idea that it would turn out this good. Amazing work to say the least and its far too nice of a piece to go into my ****ty old 242. Thanks again Scott!!

It took a couple tries to make it perfect but its amazing in my opinion.

It will be getting blasted and anodized black to blend in perfectly into the dash. SO STOKED!!

I love this build and all your others, they are just my style. :D

That there is one fancy dash! You know, all you had to do was ask and I could have whipped up something similar...of course it’d be cardboard and spray foam but once it was painted you’d never know. Lol

When do the big tires go on?

I think I am going to try it out on the 275's. Wheels will be 3 piece, if I decide I want to flare it I will just be outer hoops, tires and flares away from 315's. I am pretty sure its going to be faster than the truck was so I will have a lot to learn about this thing once its on the track.

**** Talker.....:poke:

Been dicking around with it a little bit this week, has enough fluids in it to turn the key over but get no start, no fuel or ignition so we think we have something either with VATS or PASSKEY still enabled. Got a new tune I will load tonight and see if that works to get us fire.

Fuel system got all filled and bled out at the rails so should fire up pretty quick once we get it worked out. Even filled and bled the power steering system.

No Idea how he did it but the Upholstery guy got these done in 4 days. They are not perfect but they are damn good!!! THese are real leather hides with custom stitching on the back piece. Seams are all black thread and a double french stitch added to the outer seams. Very classy looking seats in my opinion.

I am going to do all the insert and foam work on the door panels and have him do the stitching and glue up on them. The plan is to match the pleat pattern on the seats on the 2 door cards the rear sail panel pieces then come up with something for the rear seat area. I am thinking something mid 80's porsche interior is what is in my pea brain. Roll Bar will be painted satin same color as the seats.

Carpet has been shipped. Gotta figure out some seat belts now and get some tubing ordered for the roll bar.

Moving along, test drive could be in a few weeks if all goes well.

The seats do look good and the turn around time is impressive! On the rear seat delete vs keeping it, is your guy good enough (or you for that matter) to trim the sides so you can land the bars on the wheel wells? Or are you looking to go into the trunk?

As far as the sh!t talking, you know I’m diggin the car (except the color and little tires :D) as well as your skill level and the fact you’re sharing it all.

Well, after work on it last week and having a no start issue I concluded that we had no spark, no injectors. Some reading up and poking around in the Tune led me to this gem.

The Start Circuit Checks was enabled. Toggled that to disabled and she fired up, but only ran for a second. Chatted with Ron the tuner and he messed with it a bit over the last part of the week and yesterday and sent me a tune to try today, we had the wrong data in for the LS7 MAF sensor. She fired right up and ran for 40 seconds!!! So ****ing stoked to hear it run for the first time. Had 60PSI oil pressure and all looks good.

http://i1133.photobucket.com/albums/...psgg60wrjb.jpg

First Data Log of it running!!

So I got the rear diff all filled up with fluid and friction modifier and buttoned up. Got the catch can drain plumbed in and insulated since it will have to be somewhat close to the exhaust and pulled the horrible outer window scrapers off and got some new Barton parts installed. I had to pinch the tracks a fair bit to get them to stay in but all in all a nice product. I have inners but gotta figure out door panel materials before that.

http://i1133.photobucket.com/albums/...psx0ynacjx.jpg

Onto the next steps now that we know it runs. Roll bar, harnesses, dash guages, carpet, bleed brakes and clutch, coolant in both systems the list goes on and on =)

Good fun though.

Totally!! I was shocked at how fast it fired up it was just like those TV shows well except its just one guy in his garage and a week of troubleshooting to figure out why it had no spark or fuel and the car is far from done. Ok nevermind, its nothing like TV =)

Thanks, I am hoping that I can put in a matching rear seat once some tubes go in.

I have been working to get the catch can plumbing all buttoned up and get the drain line installed and heat wrapped. Also drilled and tapped the water pump for the steam port line to hook into. Got that all buttoned up over the past few days. All of my cooling system is completed and tight as well as the coolant loop for the supercharger got all the clamps tightened and got it ready to fill this week. Still have not done that yet but will in the next few days.

Carpet and floor mats showed up, its not quite the color I had imagined but looks to be ok quality. Little lighter than I had hoped but when set next to a seat it looks pretty damn good.

I ordered all of the parts for the exhaust yesterday from Summit. 2.5 from the manifold to a y pipe then into a 3" Black Widow muffler, some kooks weld bungs for o2 and wideband, a bunch of v bands and a 3" tailpipe. Will all be stainless vibrant stuff, stainless works hangers and a flex connection for the drivers side before the y. I hope to be able to run a tailpipe out the back of the car if I can get it over the rear axle and around the tank and coilovers. Its all mandrel bent should be good and hope it is enough flow for the HP I am looking for.

Picking up the tubing for the roll bar tomorrow and hope to make a dent on that over the holiday weeks.

Be just a matter of time before this bitch is on the road!!

Thanks, car isn't too impressive looking but should be pretty fun when its done.

Managed to make a little progress on the car but managed to screw up a $150.00 chunk of tube in the process as well.

Seriously had a ton of parts ready to go and have made so little progress. I needed to track down some **** for the holiday on Saturday, then get it back home, then get the bender finally bolted down in the middle of the shop, move the jeep cause I couldnt swing the damn tube around.

Frustrated around that but managed to be 1.75" wider than it should have been. Second time fit like a champ.

Gutted again.

Steering arms need to go in for zinc coating so they both match.

Jeff-

Hangers are Stainless Works ordered from Summit

Been messing with some tubing and struggling with what to do. Halfway tempted to just bag on this idea after getting 742 different opinions on the roll bar/roll cage/street car/harnesses/track car debate. All good info, just getting analysis paralysis.

Main hoop is done for the most part. Just tacked in place for now but it came together pretty nicely.

http://i1133.photobucket.com/albums/...psvtzvcsa0.jpg

Floor plate and rear fender well plates are built and ready to go in for the drivers side.

http://i1133.photobucket.com/albums/...psl1qeclb4.jpg

http://i1133.photobucket.com/albums/...psqgoq95u2.jpg

Going to keep trucking on this over the weekend and see what I can come up with.

Its a street car that will do some track days.

Might even be able to work on the exhaust this weekend if I get my **** together.

Sean

DBasher 12-28-2018 10:15 AM

Sorry about the “help” but you did ask, lol.

Just stick to the plan of a point to tie your harnesesses to and move on. If and when you decide to build a track specific car you can bust out the bender again and go full retard.

:flag2::cheers:

SSLance 12-28-2018 10:34 AM

I'm happy with my very well built 4 point bar in my street car. The four attachment points are directly above body the frame mounts and have significant plates between tubes and floor. The down bars have no bends in them.

Anything more than that is overkill and even detrimental for most street cars.

I read through your entire build thread after you posted this and its the one thing that sold me on redoing my rear design to above the rear suspension instead of on top of the wheel wells.

Thanks for taking the time to read my post and provide some great advice!!!

In the end, stiffness and function won out over form and fitment of the rear seats.

I can tell you that this was a **** ton of work.

It went in and out of the car too many times to count 90 % of them by myself. I had a hand today thank god.

checking the main hoop for fitment against the seats

https://i1133.photobucket.com/albums...psqd7ktbtc.jpg

http://i1133.photobucket.com/albums/...psuhopuqsn.jpg

Mock up of the rear plates and down tubes.

https://i1133.photobucket.com/albums...psd4twx5vm.jpg

Main structure tacked together and mocked up the down bars, ready to pull it all out and start welding

http://i1133.photobucket.com/albums/...psbfaq861a.jpg

http://i1133.photobucket.com/albums/...pst7bkzsci.jpg

Commencing final welding. Was not quite sure how the 1/8" plate would weld to the factory sheetmetal but once I had the welder dialed in it was good to go.

Pretty happy with the way these laid out, directly over the rear crossmember and shock mount should stiffen up the back of the car a lot.

http://i1133.photobucket.com/albums/...ps0zyfz0yn.jpg

http://i1133.photobucket.com/albums/...psk6uwtvvr.jpg

The way I built it I was able to slide the final welded main hoop with the down bars tacked on forward so I was able to final weld up the top of the down bars nicely and 100%.

http://i1133.photobucket.com/albums/...psytpo010f.jpg

Worked like a charm

I had a slight kick angle on one of the legs and it needed to get pushed back a hair so a little push with the porta power and it was all good!!

http://i1133.photobucket.com/albums/...psckydya71.jpg

Welded out

http://i1133.photobucket.com/albums/...ps3qbf9zew.jpg

The **** show of fire paper and all kinds of crap.

http://i1133.photobucket.com/albums/...ps1pf828vq.jpg

Hope to be able to get it scuffed, primed and painted tomorrow, maybe start on the exhaust next weekend.

Thanks for the pointers all.

I like your decision. You are someone who enjoys the big track - vs big parking lots - so the more bars the better IMO. :)

SSLance 12-31-2018 08:14 AM

I like it! That is going to work out very nicely for your needs. Nice execution...

What size tube is that, it looks big? I believe Charley used 1.75" 0.120 wall on mine but can't remember for sure. He said it was good for any sanctions up to actual wheel to wheel racing (no door bars). He was able to tilt mine forward to completely weld on top of the bars then tilt it back into place. Looks like you had to scoot forward instead because of the sheet metal the rear down bars go thru.

Thanks man, and I agree it should work just fine.

Same as yours 1.75" .120 DOM tubing but this car is pretty small so the tubing looks big. There is a joke in here somewhere but too inappropriate for anything on a forum =)

Sometimes you get some great pointers. Tying the main hoop into the b pillars would stiffen up the chassis significantly. So I whipped these puppies up today.

Turned out pretty good considering it was a little bit of an after thought. Ties into the factory seatbelt mount on the b pillar.

Went and got some paint matched to the seats...its close, not perfect. 2 coats of etching primer and 2 coats of color going on. Regret the cage being so close to the headliner at this point it was a bitch to mask and I got some on the headliner. Hope that I can use some mineral spirits to get it off.

Appreciate the good feedback on the b pillar tie in.

Sean

SSLance 01-01-2019 07:50 AM

Those B pillar supports are sweet!!

Charley was able to paint the top of my main hoop while it was tilted forward before welding it back in place. That helped a ton... Are you going to fab a package tray where rear seat was or put seat back in around the down bars?

CMillwheels 01-01-2019 08:35 AM

Wow! Awesome job man. Love the choice on the paint color for the cage, it looks really nice.

rustomatic 01-03-2019 05:56 PM

That is awesome: first brown roll bar known to man (on purpose). I love the maintenance of original color choices here--styling choices are on point!

Can't wait to see this thing under pressure!

syborg tt 01-03-2019 06:15 PM

Sean it looks great and the brown roll bar reminds me of a Singer Porsche.

I would not have thought of making the cage match the interior but it works really well. Gives it a higher class look that goes with the car and your build quality.

The B pillar tie in looks really nice and should add a lot of strength you will hopefully never need. Gotta love those dimple dies.

Can't wait to see this thing under pressure!

Thanks man, You and me both, starting to get sick of working on it and want to get it out and use it.

You have no idea how much time I have spent looking at those interiors, glad you picked up on my influence, means I am doing something right =)

I would not have thought of making the cage match the interior but it works really well. Gives it a higher class look that goes with the car and your build quality.

The B pillar tie in looks really nice and should add a lot of strength you will hopefully never need. Gotta love those dimple dies.

Thanks, yeah had some good coaches along the way, happy with how it came out for a novice.

A poor man's Singer. :D

Thanks....Funny to even consider Volvo and Singer in the same sentence....:G-Dub:

Been battling with motivation a lot lately. It seems like you make a dent on some major project then there is another major one right in front of you. I just want to go for a cruise in something cool talk cars with some car people and then Ill be fine for a while.

Managed to use my neighbors lift to get the exhaust all fabricated. I should have ordered a few more u bends to make the offsets proper instead of having to pie cut them but I was in a time crunch to get it off the lift and back into my shop so it will have to do.

Vibrant stainless pipe and mandrel u bends, vibrant interconnecting v band flanges, 2.5 on the crossover 3" out of the muffler and over the axle. Its very tight back there, exhaust tucks up very nicely though and I like the idea of a tailpipe.

Car looks good from this view so I snapped a pic =)

I have practiced on the tig on stainless and just could not get to the point where I was comfortable not ****ing this up. I dropped off the exhaust to a buddy to get welded out this morning, he is far more capable than I am. Should have it back in the next few days and fit up.

Onto the task I have been dreading for months, closing up the massive gap in the rear fenders from pushing the quarters out an inch.

Got some ****ty shrinker and stretcher from HF and had some 16ga sheetmetal sheared up and bent into a 3/4x3/4" Flange or 90. In case you are wondering, these pieces were cut into 6' lengths.

got to work trying to figure out how to do this, Got the hang of it pretty fast and got the flange that will be welded to the quarter panels built so started getting the sheetmetal all cleaned up, void of any paint and getting a nice flange on the inside of the wheelwel so I have something to land it on.

You can see that there is a compound bend but it fits the inside of the quarter panel perfectly.

The next 3 or 4 hours were spent fitting up a patch piece that would tie this all together. All in all it came out very well for me not being a sheetmetal guy or a body guy I am very happy. Its very solid, i used my hole punch/flange tool to knock out all the holes to plug weld to the car, its very solid and should seal up like OEM once I get the other side done and throw some seam sealer on. Now to do the other side.

Nice progress. Sorry about the burn. Looks like you caught some slag with the wrong side of your glove.

Exactly......I cannot imagine the pain that people that get real burns go through, has got to be horrible. Its a week later and its still gnarly. Thanks for the props, I am not sheetmetal guy so this is tough work for me.

Thanks man, I hope I get to spend more time enjoying it than working on it =)

Managed to get a little time yesterday to get the passenger side a little closer. If you are attempting to do this at home my method was pretty good. I left about .5" flange from where the inner and outer wheel tubs meet, it gave me a nice place to be able to spot weld my sheetmetal to after folding lip on the arched part with a hammer and dolly.

These are what I ended up spot welding to the actual quarter panel. THe are rolled in two different directions to fit the quarter panel exactly. They are broken up into three pieces to clear the inner body support that is up there. I wanted to be high enough that I never had a clearance problem even if I flared the car.

Once you have the outer portion of the wheelwell cut out, all the tedious tasks begin getting rid of all the little pieces, trimming to get a nice edge. I believe I am pushed out about an inch and a quarter from stock. I have plenty of room for a 275 on a 10"" wheel.

New flange welded to quarter panel.

I got all three tacked in place last night now I need to build the filler panels on the inside. I am going to do this side in 2 pieces with a seam at the top. Working with one long piece on the other side proved to be a pain in the ass for no real reason other than a seam at the top of the wheelwell that will get seam sealed just like the rest of this.

I am really hoping to be done with this part of the car this week as I have to get wheels ordered in order for them to be here by LS Fest.
