Curious as well. I'm guessing it was a desire.
That same side exit exhaust is pretty trick. I'm digging that. Some 3rd gen Camaros did that for a while.

My 4th gen 96 Camaro Z28 SS had dual exhaust on the left side. It was the best sounding exhaust I ever had.

At first I thought you offset to the gas tank to balance the weight. Not too many options with the panhard bar and link bracketry.
