Eric, it's great to hear you are back on track and moving forward in a positive way. Have Faith and keep that Vision of a completed '70 RS. It will happen soon especially with good guys like Mr. Weld.
What goes around comes around and looks like the good things are coming back your way. Can't wait to see more photo's of her coming together. (Seeing your thread makes me want to start my own build thread.) |
Eric,
Put me a list together of some parts for your engine you need. WE have some new and gently used stuff laying around from past builds, And I would love to send you some over to help out. Short list of some stuff we got -140 amp alternator -Short SBS water pump -DSE style power steering pump with bracket -Holley fuel log -Holley throttle cable brackets -etc |

Ill send a PM today. Ron, You should start a build thread now that things are moving forward. I know I would like to see it. |
ITs my pleasure!!!
|
Great move Chad!

SO many folks did things for us when we built Ty's car. This is my way of giving back!! Plus the parts are going to waste sitting around the shop. As long as someone can put them to good use, I would rather them go there, Than sit here and collect dust.

If you can work me up a price on the 140 amp alt, DSE PS pump & bracket and throttle cable brackets I will take those. And is the water pump aluminum or high flow or ?? I may want to buy that too. Dont forget a shipping quote too. My zip is 98223. Thanks! |
Eric -- Don't forget to post up about the junk block I gave you... that will make a good read!

I was gonna keep that little bit between us. Lol! As it turns out the block has seen better days. As I understand it, when Greg bought the 32 it ran rough and had a bad vibration. So after a leak down test and a quick check on the bore diameter. Failing leakdown tests and seeing the bore at .060 over already they moved on to the land of crate motors. When Greg and I looked at the block on Tuesday it looked great. We didnt measure anything. It only had about 600 miles since built. We assumed it was never broken in and the rings never seated. The bores LOOKED really good. I had the machinist check the bores and it turns out the bores are all out of round, have some bad taper and have been honed WAY beyond anything that can be used. Whoever machined it last was not qualified to floss thier own teeth. So I am looking around for a decent block now. They are everywhere and cheap. It shouldnt be any trouble. I hope no one gets the wrong impression. I am very gratefull for all of this. I only mentioned it this afternoon to Greg because it answers why it ran rough and that was something both he and I were curious about already. Besides, its going to make a really cool coffee table base now. :D |
I am happy to announce that I will be running rear suspension from Scott Mock.
This system is just like the one Kevin Miller has been using with great results in his 69 Camaro. (Kevin recently changed to a full Ridetech system) I have also asked Scott to make a duplicate of the lower dash and gauge insert in his current second gen for me. Scott has a few other customer projects he is working on now. When those are finished up then he will start fabrication on my parts order. He & I have been talking about a few other items for my car. I will update as we get things dialed in. Thanks Scott! Im really looking forward to running those parts on my car. |
sweetness! That's what I'm considering having Scott do for me as well. The more I look at it all while I wait patiently for the time I can actually work on my car, the more I think I'll keep it very simple with bolt on parts for the stock front sub and get a quality rear suspension to replace the leafs.
Good luck moving forward from here. |

Thanks Eric. I've got to decide if I want to start with another car or not first. I need my quarters replaced etc in the rear and am just not sure if I can justify the cost of panel replacement when I can find whole bodies for less than one quarter panel costs. Decisions decisions, lol. I like what Scott did with his 72.

Been a couple weeks since I checked in on this thread. Looks like things are going great with the generous donations from Greg!
I had a thought on a good use for Mr. Weld's hefty but unusable block donation. Why not turn the block in for scrap and buy something you need for the car? Turn the block into the GW hood pins or shifter or or whatever? You'd be one step closer to completion, have a great story, and not spend time or money on a side project like a table. Time for a project thread!!! |

I think I found a replacement block close to home for dirt cheap And maybe a set of rods too. That leaves the cam & pistons, bearings, rings and gaskets to round out the bottom end. |
Just read the updates Eric. That's awesome. One great guy helping another  But you keep talking about this motor and trans. But :ttiwop:

Mike I posted pics a couple pages back of the parts. Not much to look at while piled up in the bed of my truck, but as a completed motor they are great. |
So, when do we get to see some progress? I think we all love to look at pictures:D My main goal for the last month is to try to work on the car every day. No matter how small or large of a project it might be. Heck I even consider cleaning up the garage an accomplishment sometimes. If I can even get something ordered or stop by the hardware store to pick up some nuts and bolts I feel better. Small steps are better than no steps in my book.

I am picking up a replacement subframe later this week I hope (stock OE sub) and need a place to build it. It is already powdercoated and ready to go. Mine is ok but the new one is at a point to build up. No cleaning and crap of the old one. And the price is right. Its cheaper than having mine blasted and coated. I guess my point is......i need space. Helping my dad does two things, it works out good for him since this has needed to be finished for a long time and its the kick start he needs. And it gets me space. Plus we get to hang out. He is going to help where he can on the car build to. So I guess its turning into a grandfather, father, son build. (my son will be involved also) |

I got your new email address. Thanks and keep us posted bud! |

Hey? Shouldn't you be in the market for a project pretty soon?:D |
Whooooo Hooooo!
Picking up a new (to me) subframe in the AM from Mr C. Morrison. |
^

I'm fairly new here so just started checking out this thread and think you made a "Great" Choice" on the color scheme
I'm guessing Red Calipers??? But the Pewter with the darker Charcoal on the hood with the red is a great choice!! Subtle, mean, and elegant! Might be cool if you match the wheel spoke shade with the dark Charcoal on the hood but then again, the black adds an additional element of color. Glad you really thought things through and took your time as hard as that can be!  |

My car will be blue. Edit...... I apologize. I didnt realize you were looking at my avatar pic. Things have changed since that was put up. But thank you for the kind words. Now the car will be blue with a hood graphic. I will try to find the rendering and post it up. |

Would love to see the final look. What's the powerplant??? Still like the Pewter/Charcoal/Red combo! |
Cool build Eric! Congrats on the AME frame  I will be following along. As you may now know.. I have a 70 also and replied to your question over on Rons thread. I will start my build thread here shortly now that Rons car is done and heading back to SoCal. Get crackin man! Easier said than done right? Lol..

I saw your reply in Rons thread. Mine is also in bare metal, but still a rolling chassis. The rotissery is next. The frame I am getting from Craig in the morning is NOT a AME sub. Its the OEM sub from a 1970 camaro. They used it as the basis for the fabricated one they sell. I guess it's what they measured the suspension and chasis/body mount points for. The huge benefit for me is that it is already clean, solid and powder coated. And it's verified to be square. For the $200.00 he listed it for, its cheaper than having my sub blasted and powder coated. Not to mention the possible repairs and running around with it. Besides, I can sell mine as a complete unit with everything on it and direct the funds back into the build. |

Another great day! I went to Art Morrison this morning and picked up my replacement subframe. It's a OEM unit mentioned in my last post. I met with Craig Morrison there and got the guided tour of the whole place. That was VERY COOL! Thanks for taking the time Craig, I really learned a lot and enjoyed every minute. Craig showed me some different projects they are working on, some prototype parts and the complete manufacturing proccess from raw materials to crated ready to ship rolling chassis. Gearhead heaven! After that I stopped in at Chris Holstrom Concepts (youthpastor) new shop and got to see the projects he is working on right now. There is a couple nice 'birds, a sweet Chevelle and the red first gen that just came back from the interior guy. It turned out very nice! I will let him post pics when it's all assembled. Chris introduced me to a really nice guy named Rees. He does custom carbon fiber parts and has some cool stuff going on in his shop too. www.carbonguy.com He is the one who did all the CF work on the Art Morrison 'vette. On my way home to unload this sub. I will TRY to post some pictures tonight.:D |

And a few shots from my travels yesterday. Chris' shop and a few of his projects. And one shot of my son at a local cruise in. He is a total car nut himself. He can pick out Camaros from all generations, Chevelles, Mustangs, Vettes and Firebirds, everything else is a "hot rod".

Nice collection of parts. Must have bigger pictures of the Firebird:hail:
