Thanks guys. Slow progress, but I guess slow is better than NO progress :-)

Scott, I will be at Goodguys Charlotte in Oct. Are you planning on coming down again?

Great Progress!

Jay Hilliard 08-06-2011 05:27 PM

Well, its been awhile since I last updated but Im making progress. I decided to go with DSE subframe connectors and modified them to bolt subframe in.

I got the steering column rebuilt and sprayed the trunk and floorpan with Raptor bedliner. I really like how that Raptor sprayed and I think it turned out great.

brans72 08-07-2011 01:45 PM

So did you spray that in your garage Jay? If so tell me how messy was over spray/clean up. Did you find a better deal then Ebay $. I still wanna stop in maybe next weekend if you free to see your cars/get a few tips/talk a little.

Jay Hilliard 08-07-2011 02:46 PM

Sprayed it in my shop...no mess or overspray. I got it for $99 a kit from TCPGlobal.com.

I will be working on it this week/Sat, so come on down.

DOOM 08-07-2011 04:59 PM

Jay Hilliard 09-26-2011 11:00 AM

bought used stainless headers

Since my plan has been to use a ZZ427 in my wifes car, I have been looking for some headers. I found a super nice set made by Calvin Elston of Elston headers. They were custom built for a 502 crate engine in a 69 camaro with PS.

What is the best method to remove the gold and blueing? Is Glass beading ok or should I use some type of polish like metalwax, tumbling with media, etc.

I know they will turn again...just want to clean them up a bit.

http://i416.photobucket.com/albums/p...t/IMG_0649.jpg

GregWeld 09-26-2011 06:42 PM

Jay --

Mine are polished --- and that took a lot of sanding (various grits getting finer) and then they were polished. They have turned gold and blue in a couple spots (like where 4 and 6 are going from the individual tube to the larger tube)... and I've re-polished them... and they're gold and blue within the next 25 miles...

So my advice is to just bolt them up... anything more is a complete waste of time if you plan to so much as start the motor ONCE!

They're going to look EXACTLY like what they do now -- unless you ceramic coat them. I talked to my coater and he told me he could "cut" the amount of bluing etc by coating ONLY the insides... so maybe I'll have him do it this winter.

GregWeld 09-26-2011 06:52 PM

PS ---

I was TOLD that if you BARELY WARM the header --- and then liberally apply Simichrome and allow to "soak" for 3 minutes or so... then polish off... that it does a good job of removal of the gold... and it supposedly retards it's return.

The same company sells a product called BLUEAWAY... I've not tried it yet - but plan to. It's for removing bluing from exhaust... like on motorcycles... so maybe it's just the trick.

Jay Hilliard 09-27-2011 06:59 AM

thanks Greg. I have heard of Blue Away. I know they will turn blue and gold again, just wanted to clean them up some and was told chemicals like metalwax and blue away would help the bluing from coming back as bad. Its not a major deal, just thought I would ask.

BBC71Nova 09-27-2011 07:11 AM

Camaro's deserve clean, shiny headers. However, a junky ol' Nova -uhm like mine- they would be well suited for. You should just box them up and I'll take them off your hands :D

Those are nice looking for sure. Nice score. The car is coming along nicely. Can't wait to see some color pics.

coolwelder62 09-27-2011 08:20 AM

Lookin good Jay.

If you search some of the Harley-Davidson boards you'll find several methods and products that they claim work really well for the blueing, both removal and prevention.

Been biting my tongue on this topic. Not that anyone is wrong here - especially you Eric since I quoted you - but my personal experience was that the blue gone products suck. Now it's been a few years and maybe I did it wrong (possible but I seriously doubt it), but it only lightened up the blue a little bit. It did dull the chrome and the blue came back maybe 90% on the next heat cycle. I'm certain my (dyno)tune was correct so that wasn't the issue. A plating shop told me that the heat which causes blueing permanently changes the compostiion of the chrome. Stainless might be a different story?

Just my .03 and I've built a bunch of Harleys...

Jay Hilliard 11-04-2011 04:37 PM

Its been awhile....

Car is painted and needs to be wet sanded and buffed. My wife also got an early Christmas present today. Man Baer makes some nice stuff.

TRUST ME --- Stainless isn't any different -- the BLUE AWAY dulled the polished surface (was like a mirror - maybe even better!).... and it all discolored within a couple minutes of firing it off... JUST A GIGANTIC WASTE OF TIME.

Spiffav8 11-04-2011 05:39 PM

Jay....I love the color! The car is really coming out nice.
