johnnymac46 04-18-2015 03:32 PM

So finally an update!

After 5 years of fighting my barely 1 car garage I went out with a buddy and found a 1400sqft space and we now have a place to work on our cars.

Due to all the wrestling around I had to do with the tiny garage and wheeling the car in and out to work and my lack of experience, I managed to put 1/2 of twist in the rear panels.

After I got the shop started (electric, air hooked up) I started cutting my car apart....AGAIN! Started from the outside working in, fitting the quarters, trunk drops, wheel houses and finally today test fitting the AME frame back in.

It's been slow but taking my time now and measuring, and re-measuring. I've got most of the panels fitted how I want them and I believe next week I'll be able to start welding her back up.

I still have a few rust spots im patching up as I work. Onto the pics

Good luck, John. Looks like you have plenty of space now.

Nice to see the move and some movement on the car! I have a feeling we are going to start seeing a lot more updates from you now.

How did you get that air compressor on the high dive? Wow! I thought it was hard enough to get mine out of the back of my truck. I like the shop.

I was thinking the same thing!!! Lol. I would have struggled with one wheel, much less the hot water heater, the hood and compressor. You have a forklift or something? Yeah, I'm jealous of the shop. Great find!

The shop is in a commercial area, 12 pack of Budwiser and the neighbor brought his forklift over got to ride the forks with the compressor, little help from a buddy up top and it was in place!!:flag2:

slow progress

I've been putting in some time at the shop lately, slowly but surely I'm making progress.

Currently sifting through LS1tech trying to find a T56 for my build, so hopefully in the next couple of weeks I can find something.

So Progress, a little bit of forward and backward. in the moving in and out of my single car garage I managed to work a twist into my car. Called up a buddy and we went to work. I pulled the trunk floor out, built a Jig for the front sub frame mounts and started pulling on the car with ratchet straps until she was square.

After we got it where we wanted I started bracing the inside to keep it in place, pulled the straps and it held. Front corner to rear corner I'm within 1/16th of an inch. from there I started getting the quarter panels welded in, working form the door jams to the back. That is were I currently sit, I need about another day of working the Tailpan to get it to fit just right.

also bought a new fan, Virginia Beach is a warm this time of year.

On with the pictureshttp://i987.photobucket.com/albums/a...psfcletl85.jpghttp://i987.photobucket.com/albums/a...psrmtq6st1.jpghttp://i987.photobucket.com/albums/a...psqosfr68b.jpghttp://i987.photobucket.com/albums/a...psisoqjlee.jpghttp://i987.photobucket.com/albums/a...psgypfc2o7.jpghttp://i987.photobucket.com/albums/a...pswn8y5xlq.jpghttp://i987.photobucket.com/albums/a...pswbmgfn51.jpghttp://i987.photobucket.com/albums/a...psnpxt8z2v.jpghttp://i987.photobucket.com/albums/a...pseagjqlca.jpg

There ya go!!!

You know --- I love it when a guy says "that's not right"... and rather than just mud stuff over -- he makes up his mind to pull it (whatever IT is) apart and make it right. I bow your direction!!

It's a hobby - it's about learning... it's about the satisfaction of a job well done.

Glad the shop seems to be working out.

thank you, doing what I can to get it right or closer to right. Like you said its about learning which is exactly what I'm doing on this build.

The shop is coming along, we are slowly getting tools. burned through our first order of Steel pretty quick lol.

more progress

little more progress, getting the tail pan in and everything welded up. I've still have to finish up around the trunk drop panels and the bottom of the tailpan.

started to test fit the AME rear clip last night. I need to wait until I get a buddy or two to help me with that.

I will be having Christmas in June either tomorrow or thursday! I'll post pics

as for now here's where I am

Still trucking along on the car, rear frame is welded in, front sub is on, getting everything mocked up so I can pull it all apart to get ready for body work.

I have a lot of welds to clean up and I'm sure plenty of welds to add to.

Waiting on some safety wire and other small parts to get in today so I can get the brakes on

I'll shut up now.....pics:BlahBlah:

progress

Outer wheel wells are in, DSE tubs installed, started to fit the fenders today but ran out of time.

I'm going to have to phone a friend to help get that together I think.

looking at the car, i think the ride height needs to come down an inch or more both front and back.

Waiting on some more parts and some extra time to get more work done for now.

Some pics nothing special.

Yes it needs to come down --- and YES -- keep up the nice work!

Beach Cruiser 07-07-2015 06:29 AM

Yeah I def needs to come down, but looking good! I wish I could come over and help out but I'm crazy busy with work, and trying to get my car ready for back to back track weekends. UTCC first then magically turn it into a street car and go run USCA.

Spiffav8 01-04-2016 09:02 PM

A few posts ago John mentioned "Phoning a Friend"....well I am that friend. John's at work again and the car needed to be loaded into a trailer along with a few parts and head towards the West Coast where it is scheduled to have the body work completed and then be painted. I didn't have anything going on and Laurie was working, so I jumped on an airplane and flew out of Las Vegas at 7am on New Years Day. I spent that evening digging through boxes in Johns garage (which is smaller than it looks in pictures) and dug out the needed parts. The next morning I headed over to Johns shop and found what could have been a real problem. John had installed a pad lock on the door and there was no way to reach him and get the combo. Thankfully there's a custom motorcycle shop next door and when I told them I was stealing Johns car they where pretty quick to offer up their "lock picking skills".

https://photos.smugmug.com/photos/i-...-sc7mxZK-L.jpg

With that out of the way, I had just enough time to pack a few parts into the car, wire the doors shut and secure the trunk before the truck arrived. I probably should have left all the tools in the car and added them to my collection once the car get's here. Yeah....I agreed to store it till the shop is ready for it. Not like my car is here at the moment. lol

Same back yard mine is being painted in. Hopefully I can just swap them when Jim is finished with mine.

What! you didn't call me? I'm a mile down the street from Johns Shop, I would have been glad to assist or even do the whole job! WTH? what we have here is a serious lack of communication! glad you were able to get it all done, sorry I couldn't help. I haven't heard from John in a while, I assumed he was in places unknown.

Sorry man! It was a quick trip, but that's no excuse. I'll work on my communications and coordinate next time. You can help unload which is the delicate part once its painted. lol

I was able to check out the Military Aviation Museum while I was there. That place is pretty cool! They didn't have anything going on and the Fighter Factory was closed, but still a great tour. Laurie and I will be out later this year. We will all have to get together.

It was good fun. A few guys from shops in that area stopped by to see what was happening. I had to chuckle a little as none of them seem to understand what a Pro-Touring car is or how to build one. They all seem to think John has lost his mind and is doing it all wrong. One of those times when every ones an expert and owned a 65 Mustang just like it. I am looking forward to when the car goes back to John and everyone is mind blown.

Hey look my car is in Vegas....

Never thought I was going to send it out for work, especially sending it across the country. You could say I'm nervous about this whole endeavor.

Curtis is helping me get a second look at all the stuff I need to order, it always helps having a second or third set of eyes not to mention someone who has done it before and is currently a couple steps ahead of me.

Should go without mention but a Huge thanks to Curtis for helping me get the body done while I'm away!!:flag2:

No biggie....it's just part of what we do Brother. :Tomcat:

Besides you bought this car is April of 2010 and with your work schedule...you've done a lot, but at the rate it's been going the car wouldn't be finished till April 2025. I give you mad props for all the "do it your self" "garage build" things you have done....especially now that I've seen how small your garage is. But I think it's wise to let the professionals do some of the work. It insures that the things are done properly and you'll actually be able to drive it a lot sooner. In the end, it's all about the ride.

I'm not planning on taking over Johns build. One is enough. :waveflag:

I'll move it around in the garage and post pictures of it though. Maybe I'll add some "Art Work" to it while it's here. lol
