Its funny, the doors are same between the newer AMX's and the first gen., so the body lines would line up, and bolt on. I( have been looking for a set of 71 and up fenders for a while just to see how they would work, like you said there is a bit more transition room there to work with. The hood area, and nose of course are a lot different, but hey everything I own ends up being a quilt anyway.

I still think the right profile of wind and end plates with a diffuser could really add to what you've got going.......just say'in. :D

57hemicuda 06-17-2013 03:15 AM

I agree with the wing, and already have some ideas in the works. I still don't see how I could make a rear diffuser fit with the exhaust and fuel tank taking up so much space in the back. I really need to make some time to work on this thing, 30 min. at a clip just aint making it.

coolwelder62 06-17-2013 06:26 AM

:sarcasm_smiley: Ron,I wanted more time to work on my car,So I quit my job and went on obamacare.I should be OK until 2016 when America wake's up and make's some change's.

Sieg 06-17-2013 06:31 AM

The tank and it's frame are definitely a challenge. A pair of larger (thicker) veins to accommodate the frame rails with two smaller inside and one on each outboard side would accomplish "the look."

Exhaust can be dumped through it with tight clearance if it's done in sheet metal?

What you've accomplished is very impressive considering how tight the space is in comparison to most cars. From another perspective it's quite spacious compared to F1 engineering. :D

Keep it fun!

Royalworks 06-17-2013 09:00 AM

Just do a raised floor in the back for the tank. Do like a mustang tank that drop right on in.

God I hope that's true Scott!! For the first time in my adult life I'm starting to think like one of those conspiracy kooks.LOL

The trunk lid barely closes now because of the size of the tank, and it hangs out the bottom more then I'd like. The pics don't really show how space deficient this thing really is. No wasted space though, I'm using about every inch inside the sheet metal, and bulging the sheet metal where needed. LOL

WSSix 06-17-2013 06:00 PM

Looking good, Ron. Glad you're considering a wing. I think it would work well on the car.

Sieg 06-17-2013 09:48 PM

Which model ATL and what capacity do you have?

57hemicuda 06-18-2013 05:06 AM

Its the saver cell series(try saying that 3 times fast). I don't know why they call it that, because its really pretty expensive,at least the EFI version is. http://www.atlinc.com/saver-cell-series.html The space limitations forced me to run a 26 gallon cell, only because its the only cell that would fit in that space ( taller then it is wide). I do like it uses a capacitance type fuel level gauge like they use in the newer boats, maybe I'll have a gas gauge that works right for once, and man is it setup for cross country cruising with the 26 gallon capacity.LOL

SA126B 28.90 x 13.95 x 17.00

Obviously the 13.95" width is the magic number.......and very limiting. :(

waynieZ 06-18-2013 08:03 AM

That last picture looks awesome! Nice job.

Holy huge gas tank.

I spent quite a while looking at cell sizes this morning and his 14" width kills his options unless you go 10, 8, or 5 gallon.

Royalworks 06-18-2013 03:01 PM

Well how much was that tank? I had a custom one made in a really strange shape for like $800.

Vince@Meanstreets 06-18-2013 03:42 PM

26 gal is a must for a driver. The tank will also double as an aerodynamic modifying piece.
Awesome work Ron.

Royalworks 06-18-2013 03:43 PM

I was looking at the car more. I think once you put the windshield back in it will take a bit from that long nose. I think you could do a laid back spoiler to add on the quarters and trunk. I was gonna draw something on it but I couldn't save it for some reason.

57hemicuda 06-18-2013 08:08 PM

If I remember right the cell was like $1300 with the fuel pump, fuel gauge , and aluminum can. That pump is like $500 on its own though. I was going to get a blank ABS cell, lay it on its side, build a can, make all the pump parts internally in the tank, but I have to admit I'm just tired. It was way easier ordering one.

+1 on all counts

Extend the rear valance and quarter lowers a couple inches, incorporate a modified diffuser, and install proper looking wing and she's looking damn good.

Really like everything about this build, stay the course!

57hemicuda 06-19-2013 05:07 AM

Was just going through some paper work, found the receipt on that cell. Remembered they built me a 126 cell first, they did it backwards short and fat instead of tall and thin. I sent it back , and they corrected the mistake, but I had them custom make a 122 cell (22 gallon) stand it up on end, and put the EFI stuff in it. It added to the cost total it was $1461, ouch!

Royalworks 06-19-2013 01:47 PM

$1400? dang. Sounds like a bit much. But I had a standard tank made and we put a fuel pump on the outside of it.

57hemicuda 09-11-2013 04:57 PM

Finally getting back on this car, got the down bars, and crossover made.

Looks good and is giving me ideas for my car. Glad you're back on this one, Ron. Good luck!

57hemicuda 09-21-2013 12:11 PM

Started butchering up some fenders to cover that massive tire. Using the flares off the newer Javelin, and grafting it on to the 69 fender . I think it looks factory.

Rick D 09-22-2013 05:57 AM

Yup Ron that looks nice

Leadfoot1 09-22-2013 06:20 AM

Man!!!

How about you push it outside so we get a real look!!! Looks terrific!! Factory....id say better than!! If factory AMC's looked like. That id be into them.

Seriously, i missed out the rear tire covering so going back to see what youve done but it looks really serious!

Love it!!

57hemicuda 09-23-2013 04:44 PM

Trying to get this nose to look right where the two pieces merge, kinda hard to tell with all the different colors going on. Getting closer, but not quite there, what do you think?

Yeah that angle & colors is tough... can you post a pic more head on or slightly offset?

Leadfoot1 09-23-2013 05:23 PM

:hail:

Is all that comes to my mind....

I just have a hard time keeping to mind it sits on tose monster at every corner!!! Way too cool.

I wanted to ask something while im talking about the tire size... Is there a point at which the rack is taking such a beating trying to drive (yours for example) monster tires at which point it becomes not/less good for it (and something might be better?) or if the rack dont care at all and dont see the difference?

Love the project.

Lead.

1badsc 09-23-2013 08:38 PM

maybe the hump on the rear quarter will tie it all together ...have you seen this car to me its a mess with the different fenders ...http://i77.photobucket.com/albums/j7...oto465x310.jpgif you got the hump from a big body Jav and incorporated the hump i think your on to something real special or you could duplicate the fenders on this prototype AMXhttp://i77.photobucket.com/albums/j7...6amc_amx_2.jpg ...I do love what your doing to the Amx and when its done there will be nothing like it !!!!

Sieg 09-23-2013 08:54 PM

Ron to my eye it looks like you've got the vision and it's starting to take shape.

Hatcher1986 09-23-2013 09:48 PM

looks good

Payton King 09-24-2013 05:50 AM

I think it is a combination

of the different colors, body lines and those funky stripes that are making it hard to see. I think once it is one color it will flow and look outstanding.

Great idea to use those fenders! Are you going to try and use the stock bumper or make something custom?

aggie91 09-24-2013 12:01 PM

Just read though the whole thing. I think the Javelin front flares are looking good. It will be a cool car when you are done. Great fab skills!
