You should try opening your good eye perhaps

FETorino 03-14-2018 12:44 PM

I still have some healing to do so I can’t do much on my car yet but I did weight my old and new splitters.

Besides the aero advantage of the new larger and tunneled splitter it only weighs 16lbs compared to the 30.5 lbs that my old AL sheet and square tube home brew splitter checked in at.

Mounting the new splitter will add some weight but I should still save at least 10lbs. :relax:

You’re obviously confused since there’s nothing wrong with my eyes 👀

Everybody has a good or dominant eye. I just flip flopped mine. My bad eye is now my good eye.

So this week I unpacked another Aero upgrade to add to AO.

Is that for the front or the back? With some of these fashion models these days, you just can't tell. Splitter? Diffuser? Both?

I did learn this last weekend: Don't be around when someone is about to install a splitter. It's not worth the drama, especially when beer has been banned from the environment.

Paul. Don’t be coy. I know you made your way two posts down where I compared the before and after weights of the splitters.

Two pins at the back and two cable struts up front and it’s on. No drama but I alway keep a sport beverage or two with me, banned or not.

That is hurtful, Paul.

And I did offer beers.... granted, it was at 11:30am.

Speaking of Paul being coy and Dave handling tools...whatever happened with this? It looks like a wing only smaller, do tell.

GregWeld 03-15-2018 07:25 PM

He built a cinder block shelf system and that's where he stores his shoes now. Very "racey"

Nope. I used recycled barn timbers to support the carbon and I store eye patches and bottles of dry eye fluid on the shelf.

It’s a 72” top mount wing from AJ Hartman, now RHR performance.

http://i291.photobucket.com/albums/l...pswakln4lw.jpg

It should produce significantly more downforce with far less drag than the current wing.

http://i291.photobucket.com/albums/l...ps2ifixt9d.jpg

It has some really noce build quality features suck as this gurney flap channel.

Very nice! Any numbers on expected downforce?

Sure

Here are some figures from AJ of a bottom mount wing with small endplates on a Porsche 944. There are so many variables with aerodynamics that you really don’t know the downforce of a wing onbyour car unless there is testing of it on your exact vehicle.

http://i291.photobucket.com/albums/l...psoml5xtdn.png

The top mount lessens the drag associated with the wing amd also increases the amount of downforce but AJ has never posted specific charts of the gains.

Similarily the larger endplates also increase the downforce as represented by this chart. AJ and his bussiness partner Olaaf (the engineer) ran a bunch of CFD scenarios to optimize the sizing and shape.

http://i291.photobucket.com/albums/l...psjdsaw2ar.jpg

I have a Gurney flap on mine and on T-Hill the first time out I was seeing about 125mph on the front straight and avg speeds of just under 80mph and minimum speeds of about 50mph. So look at 50-130mph or even more specifically 80-130mph with a girney flap for likely downforce numbers. But with the top mount and larger optimized endplates I’d say from what AJ had published another 15% is likely.

:headscratch: Curious, by chance does Hartman make Torino rudders?

None in production but if you send him a template he’d probably make anything; even STI parts. :action-smiley-027:

Fancy stuff and rudders? That’s all on the threads you usually look at, or the ones that are locked.

Well I did turn a wrench on her this weekend so there is some progress. I've got a host of new parts to install and a little more work on my 👁 and I will make a track day before the end of this year.

Back at the start of this year my 85lb dog accidently punted me in the eye. I didn’t realize it until 3 weeks later when I started seeing floaters but he had torn my retina in 2 places. Next thing my retina was detached and I spent 6 weeks staring at the floor waiting for the surgery to heal and the gas bubble they put in my eyeball to hold the retina in place to be absorbed.

Since I was sitting around unable to drive or work on anything I spent some time thinking about what budget mods I could make that would help lower my lap times.

My dyno figures fell short of thier target last year when the motor only made 335hp at 6200 rpm. I had 15-20hp that I could gain amd still be class legal.
The heads, cams, injectors, throttlebody and headers all should support some more rpm. The motor just hit a wall and flat lined to past 7k. At the time the tuner, who has a lot of experience with mod motors mentioned maybe I should swap a stock intake onto the motor instead of the Fox Lake P51. The Fox intake has long narrow runners suited for producing toque in the small stock 4.6 motors. The other thing about the long runner all AL fox intake is it is heavy, close to 40lbs.
http://i291.photobucket.com/albums/l...pshofpms2y.jpg

I read a few articles on the Victor intake for the 2v mod motors. Most articles said the short high volume runner open plenum intake was a poor match for little street 4.6 mod motors. One article though actually had some dyno graphs and what it seemd to show was that even on a stock 4.6 the intake didn’t fall on its face down low.

Since my 2v is a 94mm bore boss block and I’m displacing 5.0 liters with some decent sized cams and ported heads the intake seemed worth a try. Plus the P51 does work well on mild 4.6 and they still fetch some decent $$ on fleabay.

So tonight off came the porky P51.

http://i291.photobucket.com/albums/l...psd4csxksm.jpg

On went the Victor and an elbow made for running the Victor on a Mustang.

http://i291.photobucket.com/albums/l...psvzefhr5k.jpg

Even if it doesn’t make any more hp or spin any more rpm I just lost 24lbs off the nose of the car and gained the ability to make a shock tower brace that the P51 wouldn’t allow. I’m also pretty sure near the end of a track session the 40lbs of AL gets plenty of heat soak and the hot intake charge is taking away even more of the little hp I have.

I’m pretty sure I’ll gain 500+ usable rpm on the too end and some hp, how much IDK but any gain plus the weight loss will be a big win.

It will be interesting to see what it does on the dyno and more importanly on the track.

Two years go by and that's all ya got for us??

Oh! Wait! You forgot to bolt it all on..... So no biggie -- you've still got another couple months to get that part wrapped up.

Yep

I need to spend less time on road trips looking after my friends and more time on my own stuff.:buttkick:

DBasher 09-02-2018 08:30 AM

OOOOOOOHHHH, ZINGER!!

Thanks for doing that by the way.

At less than 1/12th the cost of a Dirt Missle it won’t oil down a track.
