Well, we've been sleeping in the new house since Thursday. Most of the house stuff is moved in...today they are grinding the shop and garage floors prepping them for coating.
Snapped some decent pics last night... https://photos.smugmug.com/Vista-Mon...GWLxxBM-XL.jpg https://photos.smugmug.com/Vista-Mon...CB4rzW3-XL.jpg https://photos.smugmug.com/Vista-Mon...HGSSvLm-XL.jpg https://photos.smugmug.com/Vista-Mon...Cv3Vwfr-XL.jpg Floors should be ready to drive on again Thursday...then the real fun can start by moving the shop stuff in. |
Looks great Lance! It値l be nice to get out of your storage shed and into a proper building.

New Shop Design
Lance,
Floor looks great.. you won't hardly have to clean it to look good Get yourself a good flashlight as Greg is right every time you drop a small bolt or nut it will be hard to find.. I have the fleck epoxy floor so I know Glad you are going to finally be able to move things in and get settled Bob |

I guess it's time for a bit on an update on the shop's progress. I'm starting to get things put away and a bit more organized, starting with my tools.
I knew I wanted a 72" rolling chest for storage and finally found this Trinity on sale for $675 on Wayfair so I snatched it up. Once it got here and I did the final assembly, I went back inside and tried to order a couple more...but alas they were back to regular price of $991. They are REALLY nice for the money. Not Snap-On or MAC tools nice but still dang stout. https://photos.smugmug.com/Vista-Mon...jnnjLDK-X2.jpg It's already full and the top covered and I still have stuff in bins...so I'll need at least one more if not 2. I'm liking the chests lined up down the center of the shop so far, still need to tweak things but so far the plan is working. It's a bit easier to work out in the shop now that the AC has been installed. It is so nice when you find a contractor that does a job neat and tidy as I would do it myself and Cactus Mechanical here in Phoenix did just that with this install. I took the 50 AMP RV plug the builder installed in the wall out and extended the 6\3 WG into this surface mount distribution panel and then ran another piece of 6\3 out to a disconnect directly outside for the condensor. https://photos.smugmug.com/Vista-Mon...mrFBLSg-X2.jpg While I was at it I ran a 30 amp 230v plug right under the box for my welder and a 20 amp 230v circuit for the inside air handler. I then called Greg at Cactus Mechanical and told him I was ready. Couple of days later they installed this 5 ton Heat pump including the pre-built return base and extended feed out the top. https://photos.smugmug.com/Vista-Mon...Zhc4Rkc-X2.jpg https://photos.smugmug.com/Vista-Mon...cwWF6g8-X2.jpg It was 92 degrees inside the shop at 4 in the afternoon when they fired it off and when I came back about an hour and a half later it was down to 80 and comfortable everywhere inside the shop. You can feel the breeze from the feed all the way at the front end of the shop and the walls, floors and even the ceiling are all within 1-2 degrees of each other everywhere. I think it's going to work out just fine. |
It looks so good Lance!!
I'm sorry --- I did have to laugh just a bit though at the thought of the A/C pulling the shop down from 90 to 80...... WAIT!!! WAIT until it's 115* outside and has been for weeks..... OMG the thought of moving to that kind takes my breath away. I will need a summer place! :topic: |
I'm actually very impressed with how cool the shop has stayed on the real hot days even BEFORE the AC was installed. Insulating the 6" walls was certainly the right call and once I figure out a way to screen the sun out of those (6) 4' x 4' windows it'll really be easy to keep cool.
Now, the house garage, that's another story... It is NOT insulated and the afternoon sun shines directly on the big and little garage doors. It's okay...as long as you don't open the doors or put a hot car in there...but make a run to the store in the afternoon on a hot day and park the car back it the garage when you get home and look out... It turns into an oven pretty quickly. It doesn't affect the house as it's sealed off and insulated from the house nicely...but I need to figure out a way to get a fan in there to expel the hot air some how some way. |
I also found some time to play with the pool lights the other evening...the pool is part of the "shop" right? "D
|
Nice, but I'm still not putting one in. :peepwall:
My insulators were in this week sealing penetrations and the base plate. I just spent 5 hours air sealing top plates, corners, framing gaps, and tidying up their work with foam. I am insulating the garage. You could always have someone come in and blow in fiberglass or cellulose in the attic. They can blow it into the wall too, they would need to make holes and then patch it. Also, you could foam the garage doors if they aren't insulated. |
Some say the heat in the garages is worse with them insulated, the insulation keeps the heat off the cars inside the garage. Thrte is a high and low vent in one wall because there is a gas water heater in there, I'd like to fund a temp co trolled exhaust fan to pit in the high vent...
And Thanks...I think you need one... :D |
I知 low tech so I just leave the garage door open for a while to let the car cool off...

I'll let you know what I think after mine is done. |
My garage doors are insulated and they actually do very well at keeping the heat out (and also pretty well at keeping the heat off the cars inside). The doors are constantly about 2 degrees cooler than the insulated walls right beside them, probably attributed to the outside color of the doors being a bit lighter than the base color of the house.
Don, I did exactly that when we got home last night... It's fighting a loosing battle in the late afternoon though as leaving the doors open lets the sun blast right into the garage. |

Our house came with cool decking on the roof and power attic ventilators. I was skeptical but the attic stays cooler than any other house I have owned. The roof is dark gray. Don |
Where there's a will, there's a way...
Yesterday afternoon came back from a Home Depot trip in the wife's Jeep...it's 102 degrees outside at 1 pm. Solution...I just pulled her Jeep into the Air Conditioned shop instead of the house garage. 2 hours later the Jeep was a solid 80 degrees just like the rest of the shop...so into the house garage it went. :D AC seems to barely run in the shop and it's even temperatures from one end to the other, within 1.5-2 degrees from the front to back, floor to 16' tall ceiling. Very happy with it's performance so far. |
Another milestone for the new shop reached today...I just ordered my lift.
I've taped where the posts and ramps will be out on the floor and I'm pretty settled this is the best fit. I went with the Advantage 9000 XLT with two manual rolling jacks. https://advantagelifts.us/4-post-lif...Four-Post-Lift https://advantagelifts.us/image/cach...nd-600x600.jpg It won't be the two post I had before, but it should do just about everything I need it to do just as easily. Now I just have to procure an engine hoist and some car dollies to help with the install...might need to recruit a few extra set of hands on install day as well. |
Sweet! I知 in to help, schedule permitting of course ;)
|
Jealous! love the setup although I would need at least one two-post in there for work.
I am still saving to get into a new place to build the shop. Tired of working on my back! LOL |

Since you had a two post before I will be interested in your opinion of the 4 post after using it awhile.

I gotta say also, thanks for steering me toward grinding the floors. I know I took it a bit different than your approach but so far I'm very happy with them. People freak out when they see them, they even reach down and touch them with their hands to see what they feel like. Cracks me up... Dust shows up like crazy on them right now but I figure once they are dusty everywhere and get some surface scratches in them to knock the glossy back it won't show as much. |
Floor looks great.

I am truly impressed with this lift...HUGE improvement over the 7,000# Stingers we used from back in the day...
