If it makes you feel better, my truck's water pump gave up yesterday (no towing was involved). It'll cost me nearly $60.00 to fix. Dang it.

Not sure yet. But I wanna maybe try to make Sonoma this weekend. We'll see.

Glad you made it home at least before the water pump failed.

Hopefully it’s an easy cylinder swap or TOB....if not, it may be time to swap the SB2 and dog box. :bigun2:
:thumbsup::flag2:

After no issues 1st session it just wouldn't shift from 5 to 4 going into T1. Or any gear after that - while running - for that matter.

7 total laps for the day.... :shakehead:

Hopefully something minor.... as I sat on the shoulder of T2 waiting for the tow I did think to myself.... "you do have a trans not doing anything right now..." :D

I had another red RX-7 widebody with 18x12's at all corners, JRZ triples, 2470lbs wet with detuned 438 stroker LS7 (stock LS3 heads and made only 530rwhp to try to meet power/weight rules), GForce GSR dogbox, and 3.27 gears in a Cobra IRS 8.8" diff with custom axles running the RX-7 suspension out back. It had an ARE dry sump system. My first time at Laguna ever I ran a 1:35.5 with it... my buddy who built the car ran a 1:33 flat and said there was a lot more left. Also broke the GSR dogbox by not fully engaging reverse and sheared the teeth off it... We ended up tearing down the box at the track.... cleaned it up... removed reverse and ran it another couple sessions.

Sadly after running the 1:35.5 a couple laps later the bolt from the dry sump pump walked off... allowed the pulley to move... which then made the belt fall off.... so I seized the motor. That was an expensive day! Cameron Rogers now campaigns the car in TTU I believe. It's gray now....

Wow! That thing is an evil little bastard. Must be a hoot to scream around in.

Low to mid 1:30's ... that is haulin the mail at Laguna. And I am sure all of my "fast" friends who think they are fast could beat that. They know who they are.

One mustn't fail to mention the smoky burnout (going uphill) on the trailer--that's pro-trailering. Clutches love this.:bump:

DBasher 03-18-2018 01:41 PM

Both those RX7’s sound like wicked little cars, nice job Mark.

Dave, you’re ruining the pedigree of that car...:D

Vegas69 03-18-2018 02:32 PM

I just want to make sure you know they sell replacement ckutches. You don’t need to rebuild the WHOLE car.

Still getting used to this whole car, trailer, towing, racing, yada yada thing. :waveflag:

That's what I pretty do with everything. If I could short the things I get involved with I'd be a rich man.

That is the goal -- get back to the track immediately!

Thanks guys, fortunately it's a one day thing (hopefully) Monday with my my kidney and they caught it it early on. I thought it was something else and was overly worried.

The best part is I could waste a week of time off catching up on things here, lol. I was hoping to work on my car but this took me out of commission due to the pain. So I sleep, then come here, and read. Heck I even read all of Weld's "Shed Build" from start to finish, and then I found out about his health and I found out I was very fortunate.

1:52, 1:53... something like that. :D Actually had my first beer today in 10 days.... so that tells you a little how I've been feeling which is why I missed Sonoma. :(

I was looking at that date too for a possible do-over.... but I'm confirmed for Laguna Seca July 16 already so that may be too close together for my schedule.... we'll see next week.

Flash68 11-11-2018 11:49 AM

After many missed track days I finally got out again. Car had some new parts - Tilton 5.5" clutch & 800 series pedals, Woodward column (stolen from my Camaro!), and fire suppression. Everything worked good. Well, not that fire suppression thankfully.

Only real issue was when I killed it too many times getting ready to get on track for 1st session that I overcooked the battery on the starting grid and had to get towed back to the paddock for a jump.

rustomatic 11-11-2018 06:50 PM

Nice save(s)! Glad to see the Sonoma day went off without too many hitches, short of yellow cars in the way . . . SpeedSF still owes me a shirt.

Thanks! She can be a slider with my horribly unsmooth input skills (as Rob would say).

I had some good fun with a Viper in the previous session. The 2019 Ford GT in my run group seemed to be doing parade laps.

I got me 2 of their t shirts.... this time was free. Sorry not sorry.

It's so shocking that the GT would be driven like a hot dog cart; god forbid somebody's buns might fall off. I still have fond memories of that green Viper at Thunderhill that provided a similar experience--good thing he'd "upgraded" the thing in various ways before hitting the track. It looked faster parked. We do live in the era of the participation trophy, however . . .

Buy some real tires, like with treads or something. After doing so, avoid trailer burnouts for a more respectable life cycle. My Nitto NT05s work great, so long as 80% of my brakes aren't biased to the rear.

You are so right. This car makes me feel in no hurry to pilot an 800 hp 68 Camaro.... in due time.

Having a blast working on my skills (and balls) in this dirty little rat.

I am often lucky.... but I was not too smart this weekend.... made too aggressive of a pass in the final lead-follow session on Sunday to get bumped to Group 4. So now I have to do it again next time.

Still, had a great weekend running the car and really like the NASA environment and classroom downloads after each session. Great learning environment - these NASA instructors all actually want you to get better and move up the ladder. So until next time....

Ha -thanks! Get your junk together and I'll see you in Group 4.

Flash68 07-02-2019 04:02 PM

Was at NASA Sonoma mostly in support of Greg and his car, but I did run both days in HPDE4 in my effort to get qualified for Time Trial license. And even though I had a wheels off incident I got the go ahead. Look out. LOL

I must say driving in 3 sessions of combined HPDE4 and TT -- with nearly 100 cars on track -- it was a blast and forced you to be absolutely aware and on your game at all times. It was so much FUN and great track experience. Best weekend I've had. Hanging with Greg and all of the mutual friends made it obviously so much better.

Did get 2 or 3 clean laps during the HPDE4 only sessions and improved my PB by 2 seconds so that was nice.

Anyway, I will be running TT1 class in September it looks like. Maybe that slow orange 69 Camaro of Gaetano will show up finally. :action-smiley-027:
