Tried to make the C Pillar accent change a little more realistic and put some color on it..... sort of.

nice work so far.
Who is making the molds for the fiberglass parts (and then the parts themselves)? |
Haven't totally nailed down the fiberglass guy.Now that the parts are made I have to go back and add a 2" fin to every edge to made the mold a little easier to work with. Using panel adhesive to attach the metal fin. This is a case of you never have enough loose Vise Grips when you need them. What time you save making barely welded parts covered with a lot of mud, you lose making them mold ready.

My son Alex is learning about making things "mold ready".... because their carbon fiber parts have to come out of the mold PERFECT.
Project is coming along nicely Ron! |
I know you had mentioned your son was doing carbon parts. Is he working for someone, or did he start his own shop? I would imagine the learning curve on carbon stuff is tough. I know the pricing on the c/f stuff is way out there, but I know the carbon material is crazy expensive.
Glass is probably way more practical for something you lean on a lot at the track. The carbon is just sooo sexy. |
Alex and a buddy started their own company -- WWW.ENLAES.COM -- not a plug by the way.
They don't actually make the product - they have a vendor or two that does that - but they've been getting involved with the modeling process - and the molds - and anything else they can do to learn what the processes are. I don't think they have any interest in the manufacturing part of it... But they should know the craft. They sold $70K worth of parts last week... so they're starting to get some traction. They've done a couple "co" marketing deals with a couple companies and that seems to be gaining them some "cred". Hey - they're young - living the good beach life and having some fun - and LEARNING a bunch about doing business! It's way better than what they learned in college! |

Alex must be a sharp kid, it only takes one time doing composite work to figure out you don't want to be the manufacturer.
If I had a buck for every email I got wanting me to make a Mustang nose or fenders I'd be set, but the thought of cranking out glass parts would make me nuts. I'm trying to get hooked up with a local manufacturer to produce this stuff. The AMC stuff is not something anyone else would want, but if I make Payton's Camaro stuff, (fenders & quarters), I think I could sell the crap out of that stuff. |
So you're doing the fenders in Carbon right :underchair: :D :D :popcorn2:
