That was my thought as well, you look at 95% of factory cars and they have a floating caliper out back. Most have them up front as well. The C5 Z06 had a floating rear caliper and the C6 still does. Good enough for me...

rwhite692 06-28-2011 08:15 PM

Todd, Unless I'm mistaken, re: the current corvette (06-up) Z06 rears, I believe they are fixed mount? The "base" car Z51 are floater style, though.

Vegas69 06-28-2011 08:24 PM

Yep, re read my post....:D

Well, yeah, LOL you could read that either way...

JKnight 06-29-2011 10:10 AM

I used a similar rationale when I chose the C5 Z06 rears. That's turned out well because the braking has been really good with no noticable knockback.

Vegas69 06-29-2011 04:55 PM

I dropped the old girl off at JSL design & engineering yesterday morning to get the frame repaired. Couple good guys down there. Jim brought in his own Tig machine from his house to do the job. He's 65 and has been around the block a few times. He races karts all over the west coast and these things go 160 mph! He said his time at infinion was 4 seconds faster than the top qualifier in the Sprint Cup race last Sunday. Anyway, I stopped by today and he's got one side about 80% done. He still needs to add the gussets to the bottom front and inside front. He's really doing a really nice job and I feel good about the work. He said grinding out and merging the tig and mig welds has been the biggest challenge. It's always tough for me to give up the reigns. Should be done tomorrow. This ain't going to be cheap but I'm just not ready to start over out back with new frame rails and a different suspension system. I've spent way to much time finding the feel with this setup that I desire. Then I get into tearing up my trunk, fuel system is in the way, have to find the balance again.....

Nice to know its in good hands Todd. You'lk be thrashing her again in no time.

skatinjay27 06-29-2011 06:05 PM

those are some sheety pics mang! makes it look more like melted lead than some stacked tig beads!haha

Ron in SoCal 06-29-2011 06:05 PM

It looks good Todd. I wouldn't have started over either if I had your time slips. Hopefully the tab doesn't sting too much...!

GregWeld 06-29-2011 06:48 PM

Personally I hope it costs a small fortune... that way he'll get off my butt about the '32...

EEEEEEEEEEHHHHHHHHHHHAAAAAAAAAAAA

When he says it's a bitch to merge the two welds -- he's not kidding... my guess is that the MIG was done dirty... and it's now spitting and popping at him when he's trying to TIG over it. TIG does not play well with grease and dirt and old paint... And the crack - even ground out - is hiding all manor of yuck inside the "frame rails". Calling those "frame rails" is kinda like saying I'm tall.

Vegas69 06-29-2011 09:07 PM

:D Greg, you get wood on the ball once and a while. He said the mig welds were dirty and he had a spray bottle handy. It takes alot of finess to weld an 1/8" plate to .003 thick frame rails! If I ever build another, frame rails will be on the short list. These babies were cherry. I can't imagine some of the rails running around out there.

Pile of chit I phone for pics. Maybe it's just my nervous switch or you're used to my outstanding photography.

:D [QUOTE=Vegas69;356552]We really need a few more smilies around here... How's this?:D :D :D

Glad to see Payback getting repaired. She'll back on "track" again soon.
Good luck!

I think you mean .030 thick, LOL! Even so, they are indeed pretty thin, and the way they are stamped makes the thickness vary all over the place.

Vegas69 07-01-2011 09:34 PM

In all seriousness, they are probably .0625.

She's all patched up with 15 hours of repair. :willy: Jim did a fantastic job for me. Well worth the dinero. He used his break and formed the brackets so he could weld them to the cradle(away from the mig weld)and distribute some force over multiple points. It's not exactly how I planned but I gave him free reign since he was doing the fabrication. ;)

Got her back yesterday at 4 O'clock and went out and played with the proportioning valve a little and gave it a little hell to see how the repair felt. Brakes were incdredbile(got that light feeling) and the car just felt great doing some slalom. If I break this repair, it's time to back half the car. I'll be happy with equal service life to the original.

I'm happy to have a shope about 3 miles from the house with some REAL experience.

I washed her up last night and laid a fresh coat of wax. Our water is so flipping hard, I HATE actually washing the car. I wash it, dry it, wipe it down with detailer, then I can wax it. I've tried the Mr. Clean deal and it helps but doesn't eliminate the problem. They don't call us the granite State for nothing.

Looks good Todd.

Hey -- Hard water? Get yourself a deionizer... Used to use that on the big boat. Kept the varnished teak rails all purdy... and the spots off the gelcoat. No drying - just wash it - then RINSE with the deionized water. It's the way all the big ballers roll. Surprised you don't have one! :unibrow:

Vegas69 07-01-2011 10:06 PM

I've got a water softener on the house and the previous owner actually ran cold and hot to the corner of the garage from the hot water heater. I'm just to damn dense to remember to get a flippin hose since I wash it about three times a year. (I'd rather bitch and moan):D

If I had it to do all over again...

I've got to much time finding the balance I like in this car with this set up. Not to mention the mods. (Brackets, rod ends, springs, tow hooks) I really think I'd have to play with sway bar tuning to find it with the quadralink. It would've been alot easier. Every car is different...

In fact, I had an offer this week from a very respected suspension manufacturer. They offered to give me a brand new rear suspension(Not even available yet), rear end housing, and brakes. They even promised to tune the car to perfection. I had to turn them down. I just don't want to start over at this point. :_paranoid I just want to drive, man....

Steve1968LS2 07-02-2011 09:43 AM

So, is the frame fixed.. will you be in Fontana??? :)

Vegas69 07-02-2011 09:49 AM

You kidding?:D My dirty girl wouldn't miss a beat down on that pretty penny.

Was the 'respected suspension manufacturer' from Saudi Arabia?

Now that is discipline... a weaker man would have caved.

Let that big dog eat.

Vegas, does Payback have a Torque Arm?

Vegas69 07-02-2011 07:59 PM

No, it's a triangulated 4 link...

I happen to know someone with a 69 looking for a rear suspension for his car

After seeing what happened to yours that AME rear sub setup certainly looks appealing.

Vegas69 07-11-2011 06:37 PM

Just got back from the Hotchkis/Baer/NMCA event in Fontana. Kelli and I had a great time. We drove in Friday afternoon and went out and met up with Cassanova and a few other guys to race some carts. I got there late and got in on the last race. They put me in the back and after a spin out and passing over half the field, all I needed was one more lap to get past Cassanova. :unibrow: :D We stayed about 10 miles from the track and Callahan came rolling in late and we had Payback, Motiv8r, and Carl's beauty all parked in the handicapped spots at the Holiday Inn over night. I figured they'd steal the bright red or carbon fiber one with air ride instead of mine, so I slept well. :D So well in fact, when I woke up, Carl and Larry were at the track. ha ha Anyway, On Saturday, I autocrossed and ran the Baer Speed stop challenge. I was one of the faster cars in both segments. The track was very loose and slick. New floating calipers are a vast improvement. I was on R888's so I ran exibition. Sorry, no go pro or photos at this time. Saturday evening, my car got shot by an un named magazine for a future feature. I spent about 2 hours detailing the car after a full day of racing. :willy: Anyway, that was a great experience and I can't wait to see the photos.

Sunday, we got up early enough to head over with Cassanova and stop an dget a bite to eat at some dive. I decided to drag race in the morning. Personally, autocross gets a little boring after a bunch of runs, so it's nice to mix it up. Like last time, I got thrown to the wolves. Sunday isn't the best day to just show up and run. I ended up having to bracket race again. I dialed in a hair below my Vegas strip time. My first run I spun like helland missed second gear for what felt like forever and got my aise whipped. So, I had to buy myself back into the deal. Second go around I spun again and luckily my competitor red lighted so I got to make a run for free the first time in my short drag race life. :D

I get matched up against another 69 Camaro with a ZL1. This is a real drag car but.....the driver is a fine 18 year old chick. :faint: Daddy is a pro and we had a great conversation. She dials in at a 10.33 and I'm dialed at a 12.19. I finally burn out in 2nd gear and get the tires reasonably warm. The car launches similar to how it did in vegas. Still a miserable 60 foot time. It spins then it hooks good and really pulls some G's. Anyway, we both break out but she beats me to the line by .0037!!!!! for the win. That was an awesome race!

Fontana seemed to be a little greasier than Vegas but the air was a hair better. Rupp ran the day before and said the air was around 5k in elevation. I heard anywhere from 3400-4000 so who knows. Anyway, it was about 90 degrees. I was able to break into the 120mph range and gained 26.61 mph from the 1/8-1/4. Bottom line, getting out of the hole on road race tires ain't no cake walk. Rupp ran 11.47 at 124.xx on Micky Thompsons, a little more power, and about 300 lbs less weight. He's offered to let me borrow them. Probably break my car in half. Rupp, I'm ready to go heads up. :D

Car ran great all weekend. I missed more shifts this weekend than I've missed in all the previous events. It's time to adjust the clutch and I think the 600 is about fed up with me at this point. ha ha

Now that sounds like a great weekend, Todd!!

GregWeld 07-11-2011 07:55 PM

Good story Todd!

Think about this -- When I pit crewed for McCollough and Whipple in 1971 -- AA/FC -- they set the WORLD RECORD at 201 MPH.... and here you are going 120!! Pretty amazing if you ask me!

Glad you had a good time and didn't break anything (that we know of YET). :unibrow:

Tom.A 07-11-2011 07:56 PM

The big block sounded really good on the speed stop challenge and I told you I thought you were sandbaggin with 12.19 :D Congrats. There were some real cards over at the strip when I went checked it out. I had flash backs of the old LACR in Palmdale.

Vegas69 07-11-2011 09:04 PM

Ha Ha Greg, you know where I'll be looking first....

You were right Tom. I have broke out by less than a .1 both times I've been out. Breaking out means I'm getting faster. I was launching at about 2200 in Fontana vs. 3000 rpm in Vegas. I have to put drag racing right up there with autocross.

People look at you with a blank stare when you tell them you drag raced, autocrossed, and ran a 0-xx-0 event in one weekend.

Jr 07-11-2011 09:58 PM

Todd,

What did you run in the Baer stop challenge?

6D9 07-11-2011 11:15 PM

Man sounds like a blast! I cant wait to someday do one of these events. Your car is an all around killer ride...
