Thanks Eric, I'm glad that I looked at those in a bigger format. I just figured out that my tranny cooler:_paranoid would not have fit with the upper close out panels. I will have to lower it down. That car is pretty sweet looking:D I love the color.

Engine update: dropping the pistons of with my machine guy tomorrow so he can finish hone the bores to size. I ended up with a different block and its a 4 bolt too. I am able to re use the pistons that came with the block I got from Greg. He also has a nice set of H beam forged rods for me. Now I am down to buying rings, bearings and gaskets for the bottom end. I also need a hyd roller cam. But am not sure which one to get. Any suggestions on lift, duration, LSA? Iron heads (RHS Pro topline), 388cid, Eddy perf rpm intake,10:1 comp, No power adders. Want good power but its a street motor first. |
Get a comp cams THUMPER -- great sound -- head turner -- good manors... good bottom end power. SMALLER is BETTER in cams for the street.

The lobe separation angle is confusing to me. Is a tighter angle better? Wider better? On a carb'd engine where do I draw the line? |
I always have this conversation with the engine builder -- because the cam is the brain of the engine - but it has to work in harmony with all the other factors of the motor - compression (static) - head size - desire... i.e, torque or HP - and where do you want that. Power brakes or not... etc.
SO ---- LSA -- WIDE makes for smoother idle and better vacuum... NARROW - makes lumpy and low vacuum Lift is about so many variables -- but "DEPENDS" -- valve to piston clearance.. rocker arm ratio... valve springs used - street daily driver - or a drag racer. ME... I'm all about bottom end grunt and great drivability... so I like moderate lifts with moderate duration - and WIDE LSA.... Moderate allows the valve train to live... Moderate duration allows me to enjoy the car in todays traffic with the A/C running.... :D and the Wide LSA is good for my MAP sensor with EFI and 8 stacks... Todays cam profiles allow a guy to tailor make / order a cam that can do it all.... So - really - the cam depends on compression - head size - and use... and that all needs to be PLANNED TOGETHER before the very first part is purchased. Then toss in the gear ratio - auto or stick - converter loose or tight... so plan a plan and then plan your plan with the man.... that's building the engine. And even if he's not assembling it -- he's built enough of 'em to be a good guide on the total combination. |
Thanks again Greg. That sure gets me going in the right direction.
I have been reading a bit on cam selection and when the time comes to purchase one I will be better prepared. I really appreciate the input. |
Here ya go.... sweet dreams!
The THUMPER... |
Cam recommendations and grinds are like... well you know...
Decide what manners you REALLY want the car to have before you buy! What are you REALLY going to do with the car 99% of the time? Call the cam help lines, discuss with Greg and others who have more experience than both you and I, and then make your purchase. |
Thanks Ty,
I had a really good conversation via email with Greg yesterday about cam selections. I also found several really good articles online. Between Gregs help and the reading I am still doing I feel pretty good about choosing the right cam when the time comes. Based on how I will use the car and what I really want out of my engine, the 268 from the XFI line at CompCams looks like a contender. I'm still learning. I have a while before I need to buy a cam. In the mean time I am having fun reading and talking about it. Thanks again to everyone for all of the advice, help and encouragement. |
Great to see the updates Eric.

Kind of quiet over here:_paranoid Must be some top secret progress going on.:unibrow:
|
No, nothing top secret. Lol!
I have been getting my dads shop finished inside. At least enough to move the car into it. That should happen in the next two weeks if everything goes ok there. I have also been gathering parts and tools, trying to get a workstation set up and generally getting organized for this. I hate getting half way into something only to realize I am missing a part, tool or materials for that specific project. The motor is getting close to finished though. Progress is still being made, just not much worth posting about. Thanks for checking in. |

Big thanks to Chad Fletcher for donating some much needed parts
Last night I went to get my mail and what do I find? A big box full of cool parts! Chad sent me a type 2 power steering pump with a nice anodized DSE style bracket, a 140 amp alternator(very compact too. Should run the welder with that much power) A nice ATI super damper that can be modified to run as a external balance type for my 383. And a high torque mini starter. Chad even covered the shipping! Thanks Chad! These will be put to good use and really help me with my project. In other news, the car gets moved into my dads shop at the end of next week. We finally got things organized there and I have the space I need to tear the car apart. The heads are done now and so is the block. I will be doing a mockup on the motor very soon. Moving forward, slow but sure! |
Nice Move Chad! Glad to hear your moving ahead on the car.
|
Good to hear Eric!
|
Thanks guys. I'm seriously chomping at the bit to get this further along. It's almost painful that its been so slow. But slow is better than stopped any day in my book.
|
Very nice of Chad.
Good to hear that you are moving forward with the build Eric. Keep us posted buddy! |
It's people like Chad that make this a spectacular site, good people. Sounds like it's coming together Eric, Good luck.
|
Slow but sure, slow but sure. I just made a deal on a great parts car. This covers ALL of my sheet metal/body needs except full rear quarters. Plus it has a much better rear end too. And with the scrap haul at the end it pays back a little bit too. Bonus!

I picked up more parts last weekend. Door glass, weather stripping, new gas tank, upper back seat. I have been finding some great local deals. Everything listed above was $100.00. The tank and weather stripping are brand new. The tank was still in the box. |
Sounds like some great deals. I'm looking forward to seeing some progress. You know we all like pictures.
|
Sounds like your making some headway Eric! Post some PICS!!!!!!
|
Moving day FINALLY!!!!
I am hauling the bucket to the shop as I type this. Finally!!!!
Now to figure out how to get the pics from my phone to post.....:goofy: |

Hey E...
:ttiwop: Haha... |
I will vouch for Eric because he sent me text message showing "the project" on the trailer!
BTW! HAPPY BIRTHDAY ERIC! |
Happy Birthday Bro! Hope you're having a great day...
|
Thanks guys! 41, nothing major. More fat, less hair.......
I got the car unloaded in the shop without any drama. I have to run some errands in the morning then over to the shop and digging in. I have air tools, better jack stands and way more space. Deconstruct time. It's just a rolling shell now, it won't take much to blow it apart. I hope to have the rotisserie mounts modified and fit by Friday. And the body shell mounted over the weekend. |
Happy bday dude.... and keep pluggin away!
|
Eric, you should call me about doing a RideTech 4-bar under the rear of your 2nd.gen.I think I can get a real nice system for just a few dollars more than the 2-link we'd had org. talked about. Scott
