Love the build though. Such a cool car for Dad! I've had dreams of building a car for my Dad...but his dream car is a 55 Chevy. Quite a bit more expensive than a Camaro. :( |

Got some more done, painted and installed most of the plastic panels.
Also got the removable gas tank panel fastened to the tank for mock up. http://i270.photobucket.com/albums/j.../gastank11.jpg http://i270.photobucket.com/albums/j.../gastank12.jpg |
Got the inlet tube soldered in and the pump wires run through the bulkhead. also had to alter the fuel pump sender to fit correctly into the baffle. Now I just need to find a good fuel resistant sealer to seal it all up.

You've got a grommet on those wires running through the metal, right? I'd redo that set up even if you do have a grommet on the wires. Way too risky being right there with the fuel vapors. They make bulkheads with threads on both side and with a rubber seal. That's the way you need to go about wiring the fuel pump. The ground can just connect to the fuel tank itself or run another bulkhead and run the wire to the frame near by.

Now that you mention it, I remember that thread. I have no idea where to get something like that though. Maybe McMaster Carr? You might be able to make it using a small grommet that'll let a bolt bass through. You'd have to seal the bolt to the grommet though. Maybe use the sealant you'll use on the tank cover. Use washers on either side of the grommet and it should seal together when tightened down.

Yeah I may have to do something like that. You would think something like that would be a common, easy to find part.

Dash pad is finally in, I should have the gauges all wired and installed this weekend

finished up alot of the interior wiring today, got the speakers installed and radio working as well...

How did you change that dash to the earlier style?
Just a dash pad change? |
yeah, just a pad change. We didnt really like the squared off design of the 80 camaro dash/instrument cluster. Early second gen dash's look alot cooler
|
Cool, Thanks.
Great job on the Z! |
What brand did you go with?
How's the fit/finish? Thanks |
The gauges are New Vintage Redline Series, the dash pad is from Classic Industries and I dont remember the manufacture of the instrument cluster. So far the fit and finish is what you would expect of aftermarket parts, so in plain terms.... not great lol
Ill get it close though. |
It looks good though. Good job!

Well Dad and I have made quite a bit of progress in the past few weeks. The entire interior is done except the headliner. The rear tail lights and wiring is done and all electrical circuits and wiring have been completed and tested. As of now all systems are go except the fuel system. Last few things before firing her up for the first time are the fuel system and finish the exhaust on the drivers side. I will post up more pics soon and a video as soon as we fire it for the first time.

Nice! Looking forward to seeing the pics

Here are some pics of the recent progress.

Thanks guys! Its been a fun build.
Here's some progress from today... We finally got the last AC line crimped and installed. http://i270.photobucket.com/albums/j...ps4fc3ddef.jpg Finished the tank and sealed it up http://i270.photobucket.com/albums/j...ps30a7420b.jpg http://i270.photobucket.com/albums/j...ps81ddaa64.jpg Installed the tank and Corvette Regulator/lines http://i270.photobucket.com/albums/j...ps2bd1b2c6.jpg And got the MC lines done http://i270.photobucket.com/albums/j...ps49b36b76.jpg |
Finally fired the car today. We were able to get it running wed. but since VATS was still enabled it would shut down after a few seconds. After fixing a couple little leaks and a slight misfire we will get a new exhaust under it and back to NicD and AZdynochip for final tuning and dyno time. I should have some video up pretty soon.

A few updates...
Just been working on a lot of the "new car" bugs lately. Had a transmission issue that kept us stuck in limp mode for a bit. Figured out the main trans connector was wired wrong. Ive since rewired that and all is good there. Been trying to chase a misfire in cylinder 7. Still not sure what is the cause of it (hopefully not more messed up wiring) Besides that and a few little leaks here and there we are ready to take the car down for the exhaust and front end alignment tomorrow. We are replacing the existing, non-mandrel bent exhaust (with cats) with a new aluminized 2 1/2" mandrel bend dual kit with Magnaflow 3-chamber mufflers. After all that is done just a few more loose ends to finish up like headliner, kick panel speakers and the final tuning and dyno run. Ill post up some pics of the exhaust install and hopfully a couple videos soon. |
Congrats! Good luck getting all the little bugs worked out so you guys can go enjoy the car this year

Exhaust and alignment done today. Finally got her out on the streets...
http://i270.photobucket.com/albums/j...ps497f816a.jpg http://i270.photobucket.com/albums/j...ps6594d4e6.jpg http://i270.photobucket.com/albums/j...ps7440ccd3.jpg http://i270.photobucket.com/albums/j...psf8a70b80.jpg http://i270.photobucket.com/albums/j...ps896ea3c8.jpg |
So we figured out we had a bad injector. I ordered a new one from Rock Auto and it was stuck open and gas washed the cylinder yesterday after I installed it. Today we went down to a local GM dealer and $150 later we had a new, working injector. Here is a video of us getting it fired back up and burning out all the residual fuel in the exhaust system....

Congrats on the fix.
Saw the vid. As far as the driveway...it'll buff out, right? :peepwall: :D |

Very good find! Most guys figure out they have an injector problem that's stuck open, when they turn the key, and a rod makes a new hole in the block, because the cylinder has fuel puddled in it.
