2nd Chance Camaro - Installing the Ride Tech Air Bar
2012 02-21 Update - Installing the Ride Tech Air Bar www.2ndchancecamaro.com Good Morning, Now the fun begins. The goal with this project is to teach people what I've learned from the last build. The main purpose is to keep people from losing there project because of poor planning. Planning isn't just writing down what you want the end product to look like it's actually being honest with yourself and making sure you have the time, money and the resources to actually build your dream car. The plan is to show the option/cost you can do just for the rear suspension. 1. Leaf Springs Similar to Hotchkis a. Benefits of keeping your leaf springs is cost is minimal and the car isn't going to be out of service. b. Most backyard mechanics can do this swap in there garage or even a driveway. c. Easy exhaust routing ( keeps your costs down when running exhaust ) d. There is a good chance you are going to be able to find an aftermarket exhaust or even use your existing exhaust 2. Diagonal 4-Bar Similar to Ride Tech a. Benefit of this set up is cost isn't much more then leaf springs and is very adjustable. b. There is minimal welding that can be done by any experienced welder. c. Custom exhaust is a necessity 3. Weld in 4-Link Similar to DSE a. Cost is more then a Diagonal 4-Bar b. Your going to need a shop or have a good deal of Fabrication skills c. Very adjustable d. Custom exhaust is a necessity So for this project I choose to go with the Ride Tech Air-Bar Set up using the single Adjustable Coilovers. I can do most of the preliminary work in my garage and haul it over the High Speed Welding and have Jr. set the Pinion angle and weld the brackets on the Axle. Here is the Ride-Tech Bracket mocked up on the car the drivers side was a perfect fit. The passenger side needs a little adjusting to make it work. http://garagescene.net/_data/i/uploa...d0264b9-me.jpg After I located the bracket on the frame rails I held it in place with a good set of clamps. After that all I had to do was drill a few holes in the floor and the upper bracket was in place. http://garagescene.net/_data/i/uploa...64f728d-me.jpg Here is a close up of how the bracket hit the floor on the passenger side. Since all of these cars are slightly different you can't expect them to fit perfectly. It's funny I was talking with Ron and his passenger side fit perfect and the drivers side was just a little off. http://garagescene.net/_data/i/uploa...078f020-me.jpg Once the car arrives at High Speed Welding they will flattened the bracket so it would line up with the floor. Very simple fix. So be honest with yourself if the car your working is you only car then you should go the leaf spring route. If you don't have to worry about the car being down for a couple days then step up to the Ride Tech suspension. More to come later this week. Pictures hosted by www.garagescene.net |

The goal with this project is not to break the bank before the project even starts. I am fairly certain that this car will handle far greater then my driving ability and I will even have money to buy dinner afterwards. |
Like you say they all need tweaking. But its definitely worth it in the end. The cars coming along great Marty. I enjoy your updates.

2nd Chance Camaro - Mocking up the Subframe
2012 03-04 Update - Mocking up the Subframe www.2ndchancecamaro.com Good Evening, Since the goal with this car is to use as many bolt-on's as possible and limit the custom fabrication which can drive the build cost up and sometimes spirals projects out of control. If you have an unlimited budget and money is no object then you don't have to worry about it. However, most projects are built on a very strict budget these days, this one included. I learned a lot building Syborg and let me tell you there are plenty of places I could have and should have saved money. One of the reason I picked a Camaro is there are plenty of parts available and also a very wise man that will only go by the name "Bob" once said to me when you build something make sure there will be plenty of buyers when it's complete. Remember, you may not have any intentions of selling your project but no one knows what the future holds. So when you looking to build something stay true to your goals which should include a realistic budget of time, money and skill. With the sub-frame back in the garage it was time to assemble all of these bolt-on parts. I also felt that it is important to involve my daughters and some of our friends kids. http://garagescene.net/_data/i/uploa...6d2e43c-me.jpg Installing the custom G-Force crossmember was fairly easy with the subframe out of the car. http://garagescene.net/_data/i/uploa...1d6aadd-me.jpg You can see my little helper putting the bolts in for the engine stands. I think she was having more fun then me. http://garagescene.net/_data/i/uploa...b6d265d-me.jpg and this picture proves it. http://garagescene.net/_data/i/uploa...b36178e-me.jpg I think she did a great job http://garagescene.net/_data/i/uploa...aaf8c6b-me.jpg Our neighbors son happened to be over so I figured I would let him bolt in the G-Force Crossmember. http://garagescene.net/_data/i/uploa...af529cd-me.jpg He did such a great job installing the crossmember I figured I would let him install the Edelbrock headers. In a previous post I think I mentioned that these are for a 2010 Camaro. With a little modification they will work perfect and we will be able to tuck them up nice and high so they are not visible when you look under the car. This part is another example of an off the shelf header that will require minor modification which will keep the overall build cost down. http://garagescene.net/_data/i/uploa...f6098b6-me.jpg More to come later this week. Great pics Marty! Oh, and the update wasn't bad either...

Marty
I don't know why I didn't think of hiring cheap labor, it could keep the build cost down. Mike |

2nd Chance Camaro - Mocking up the Kore3 Brakes
2012 03-20 Update - Mocking up the Kore3 Brakes www.2ndchancecamaro.com Good Evening all, Time to start putting on all of the cool parts I've acquired. First to go back on were the old spindles. http://garagescene.net/_data/i/uploa...6dc1d21-me.jpg Then I installed the AFCO steering box from www.hoodpins.net . http://garagescene.net/_data/i/uploa...9f0e152-me.jpg Next to install was the Kore3 Front Brakes it is a very complete kit and simple to install. http://garagescene.net/_data/i/uploa...16e7ec1-me.jpg Per the easy to follow instructions. First cut off the ears to make room for the new brackets. I took a little off at a time remember once it's gone it's gone so don't go crazy. Be safe take off a little at a time. http://garagescene.net/_data/i/uploa...8c57da4-me.jpg Here is what the final spindle modification looked like. The next step it to drill out two of the dust shield bolt holes and re-tap them for new hardware. http://garagescene.net/_data/i/uploa...9622dd2-me.jpg Now you can install the Bracket, Caliper & Hub http://garagescene.net/_data/i/uploa...011452e-me.jpg http://garagescene.net/_data/i/uploa...fa29840-me.jpg All I need now is the correct rotor however I left it at my warehouse so for now I am going to use the rear rotor. I just wanted to see how the brakes will look installed. I am very happy with this kit and the total install time was less then 2 hours. http://garagescene.net/_data/i/uploa...e76a990-me.jpg More to come later this week. Pictures hosted by www.garagescene.net |
Tobin does make some nice stuff.
|
Marty,
|
I have the exact same kit on my Firebird! Upgraded to Z51 rotors front and rear though so it's a C5 caliper/C6 rotor hybrid. 13.4" up front and 13" out back.
http://i691.photobucket.com/albums/v...-05Sema840.jpg I think it fills the 18" Rushforth SuperSpokes out nicely! :D |
Yep, We are going to be upgrading the rotors for sure. These were bought just for Mock up. Wait till you see what were doing it's going to be very cool.
ps - I can't tell you yet but it's going to be blow peoples mind. Quote:

2nd Chance Camaro - Rear Axle Prep
2012 03-22 Update - Rear Axle Prep www.2ndchancecamaro.com Good Morning all, It's time to get the rear suspension on the car so I can get it off Mario's Rotissorie. The Rear suspension is a pretty straight forward install. http://garagescene.net/_data/i/uploa...20378dd-me.jpg My oldest daughter figured I was hungry so she made me lunch. Now that is a good kid! http://garagescene.net/_data/i/uploa...0ef6aed-me.jpg Since the upper link bar brackets needs to be welded to the axle I wanted to make sure the Powder Coating wouldn't get damaged on the upper bars. Time to take stock in the 3m Blue Painters Tape. http://garagescene.net/_data/i/uploa...fa2d16d-me.jpg Lower Bar installed http://garagescene.net/_data/i/uploa...b3d4fcd-me.jpg I just like this picture. http://garagescene.net/_data/i/uploa...34fde13-me.jpg I needed to get the rear differential in the trailer so my daughter Kenzie and I installed the rear tires so she could roll the rear differential into the trailer. http://garagescene.net/_data/i/uploa...e4f06de-me.jpg and yes she did it all by herself. Man is this little girl strong. http://garagescene.net/_data/i/uploa...3f074e2-me.jpg In the trailer and heading over to High Speed Welding so they can weld on the rear differential brackets. http://garagescene.net/_data/i/uploa...58444db-me.jpg Pictures hosted by www.garagescene.net |
2nd Chance Camaro - Installing the Ride Tech Rear Brackets
2012 03-26 Update - Installing the Ride Tech Rear Brackets www.2ndchancecamaro.com Good Evening all, While the car was at High Speed Welding the guy's flattened the passenger side bracket to match this cars floor pan. Very simple tweak that had to be done. Even though these parts are meant to be bolt-on some-times they require a little work to fit better. http://garagescene.net/_data/i/uploa...9a9e194-me.jpg After some discussion Dennis at High Speed Welding felt it was important to retain the hardware supplied by Ride-Tech and to weld the brackets to the stock subframe to help distribute the load on the stock frame rails. http://garagescene.net/_data/i/uploa...32cab53-me.jpg http://garagescene.net/_data/i/uploa...bf4424b-me.jpg http://garagescene.net/_data/i/uploa...e739a1c-me.jpg http://garagescene.net/_data/i/uploa...1dc9ee1-me.jpg More to come later this week. 2nd Chance Camaro - Finishing Up the Mini-Tub Install
2012 03-27 Update - Finishing Up the Mini-Tub Install www.2ndchancecamaro.com Good Morning all, The guys at High Speed finished off the install of the Mini-Tubs. Mario did a such great job cutting out the original tubs it made short work for the guys. http://garagescene.net/_data/i/uploa...766c2d3-me.jpg You can see that they have already bent up one side. http://garagescene.net/_data/i/uploa...ade87e4-me.jpg The passenger side is in and still needs a little patch work. http://garagescene.net/_data/i/uploa...a3886ae-me.jpg Quick look from inside the wheel well http://garagescene.net/_data/i/uploa...450ac8d-me.jpg Passenger Side Completed http://garagescene.net/_data/i/uploa...dee2b60-me.jpg More to come later this week. Are you going to run the 8.5" 10 bolt?
Tonny |

Quote:
The car is only going to have 500hp so there is no need to waste the money on a 12 bolt or god forbid but a "Ford" 9" under a chevy ((   )) However, I Upgraded the axles to Mosers, added TA Diff Cover and Eaton Center Section we may even weld the Axle tubes to the Center Section. This project goal is not to go overkill on everything. Spend the money where it needs to be spent and that's it. |

Why spend money that you don't have to. You still have to buy a new center section. New Drive Shaft bla bla bla Only spend money that you need to spend. The car is being built to actually be driven and driven to MTB trails so I can ride. I am sure I will do a couple autocross events. But other then that the plan is to actually enjoy the car and not make it into something that will be a PIA to own and that is where most of us screw up. Just think back to when you were an actual kid and you and your friends were out cruising the streets and driving your car. The problem i see with most projects we all think we have all of this free time to take our cars to Track Events, Good-Guys shows and what not. Why not just build a car you can actually drive and if you make it to an event then by all means use it. |
All good points!
|
The car is looking good. Marty what car did you get those spare tires from? I need to get some for rollers for my car. Nice trailer.
|
Quote:
The spare's are from a late model GTO. Chad at Fletchers hooked me up with a Guy and I can't thank him enough. They clear the Kore3 brakes perfectly. |
I have raced with 8.5 10 bolts on different road course types of racing and never had any issue. normally the weakest link are the axles. I am putting moser axles in my 8.2 10 bolt in my Chevelle. I'm running a LS5.3 so not a ton of torque. my next project will be a 2nd Gen Camaro and I will run the 8.5 10 bolt also.

Thanks good to know...
