Man that looks like fun fer sure ... congrats for getting out there and driving it like you stole it !!!!!
|
Glad to hear you had a good weekend and you did well.
|
Congrats on a great weekend!
|
We love this thing! Wish that there were more trucks like it out on the track!
|
Speaking of volvo, did you get rid of yours? How do you like the rear suspension? No limit makes a kit for these trucks for i think around $1200. Would you do the mustang swap again, or possibly find a different solution?

I love the rear suspension and so far it is up to the task of track days and handles extremely well. No regrets. I am not too sure what I would do. Likely, a 2013 mustang rearend again, I like it and the rear suspension very well. I like the coyote as well but you don't really need much from the donor car. Trans is a turd. I would either do a t-56, a Richmond, a Liberty or something along those lines over the MT-82. That would also allow me to run a more conventional rear driveline. All in all though, I am pleased with the end result, not necessarily the blown up motor in the garage =) So no rest for the weary....well, I wanted to get these done before the weekend but just did not get around to it. Stock 2012 mustang rear brakes to begin. http://i1133.photobucket.com/albums/...psfes5higg.jpg Rearend has to come apart in order to change the backing plates, to I leisurely pulled the diff cover, center pin, c lips and slid the axles out and cleaned them up. Pulled the stick brake brackets off the axle and bolted on the FORD GT500 brackets on. $60.00 each I believe. http://i1133.photobucket.com/albums/...psebpt8bo7.jpg Got those on both sides and put the diff back together, it needed a fluid change any way...no it really did. The cool thing was that this setup used the OEM mustang caliper and the GT500 bracket and rotors. Got the rotors back on and bolted the calipers on as well. That is a 13.8" rear rotor. http://i1133.photobucket.com/albums/...psrand0pvm.jpg 18" wheels, 14" rotors in the rear. http://i1133.photobucket.com/albums/...pstgodusmn.jpg I did it mostly because I wanted a bigger rotor, not for any kind of additional stopping power. Should give me a little better rear braking as well. Going to run out of stuff to do soon :D Sean |
are you running a parking brake at all?

Had a great weekend, went to the late night drags on Friday night for a little bit and drove the truck, no issues.
Headed to cars and coffee and got to talk to some great folks and see some killer cars. A few real standouts. http://i1133.photobucket.com/albums/...ps9agiteil.jpg I absolutley love these cars and would sell one of my ________ to get one. http://i1133.photobucket.com/albums/...pstdoxakc2.jpg Headed over to my friends Compound to help out with firing up his cruiser....more on that in a second. Followed him back from Cars and coffee and took advantage of his street to warm up the tires =) http://i1133.photobucket.com/albums/...psobfwykq9.jpg His place is pretty incredible so I took the rare opportunity to snap some cool shots in his driveway. http://i1133.photobucket.com/albums/...pseqpgsycw.jpg http://i1133.photobucket.com/albums/...psvxpe6mgv.jpg http://i1133.photobucket.com/albums/...pst84pvwme.jpg Cruiser is just damn cool. Think of it as a restomod FJ40. Its new, painted, plated and powdercoated everything, top to bottom and is top notch. I did some of the metal fab on it and welded up the cage all the rest has been him and he needed a hand starting it. He wanted nothing to do with it so Ole and I got to work and got it fired up. It has a really cool Fuel injection setup on it and after getting the distributor in the right spot we got it fired up and broke in the cam and stuff. His shop is pretty rough too.....what an awesome place to work. http://i1133.photobucket.com/albums/...psfbjym3du.jpg http://i1133.photobucket.com/albums/...psgbdfkmtd.jpg http://i1133.photobucket.com/albums/...psngjamjkl.jpg Got a chance to bed in the rear brake pads and mess with the rear bias. I overdid it and got the rears to lock up a bit. Made one more adjustment and think Ill get it pretty close. Truck stops though, no doubt about that. Swapped out the seat for the other one tonight as I need to do a little around town driving this week with the nice weather. Fending off a cold right now. Big swap meet this weekend so doubt much progress. Need to get Harnesses, Tires and a stereo before Vegas. Sean |
Love those old Cruisers! That one looks fantastic. Perfect mix of stock looking with just a touch of attitude.
What does it have for an engine? |

What an epic thread. Great build, well documented, ups and downs, you name it. What more could you ask for?

Have you checked mileage on the truck?
You had mentioned transmissions. Obviously Richmond has a 5 and 6 speed, and the T56 is a 6 speed. Is there a strength factor associated with the richmond 5 speed vs the t56? What reasons would there be with going for the .xx overdrive gear instead of the richmonds 1:1 5th? |
Quote:
I'd bet you could see 20+ out on the highway just cruising along in 6th gear. |
No idea on the mileage yet, but around town it seems to be pretty good. I can actually check it on the next tank since its been around town and some highway miles as well.
Dan is right, I have been beating on it pretty good and most of the miles on it have been at the track. The 1:1 5th gear on a 5 speed would be pretty useless for me. I top out right around 120 in 4th gear at the limiter. I need some taller tires to help with that. If I do a tranny swap, I will also need to do gears in the rearend as these tranny's are geared a little funny to work with the 3.31 rearend that comes in these cars and that is part of the reason they get great mileage on the highway. The new dodge huh......truck has been in the shop getting worked on more times than any other car I have ever owned, oh and you have to pay for the rental car, no loaner on a $50k truck still under warranty. We will not be getting another new dodge anytime soon. This time it is in for a check engine light, code P20EE, they are saying that it has a bad catalytic converter, it also needs fuel filters and the injectors cleaned....some covered under warranty, others not. Keep in mind, the truck has 33,000 miles on it and has been very well maintained. Truck has had 17 warranty recalls performed to date. Also the computer has been replaced and reflashed several times now, the radio module has been replaced, overhead lights and console replaced, fuel filler neck failed on the road so the tank was dropped and that was replaced as well.....you could not get diesel into the tank at that time. We got this truck because I was tired of constantly having to work on my personal rigs to drive them for work. This thing is awesome to drive but horrible to own and maintain. Looks like I might have a whole fleet of fords soon enough =) Been working on some interior stuff the past week or so, will have a stereo soon as well =) Maybe Ill get some pics up and bump this thread. I did teach myself how to build and use a buck for metal forming, its pretty damn cool if I dont say so myself. Happy Wednesday everyone!!! Sean |
Sean, it seems that maybe you can build a better truck than the Dodge/Ram/Chrysler (I would include Ford here too, based on experience with an F250 p-stroke) people. Perhaps a super-cool towing-capable vehicle build is in your future . . .
|
How about a Bump or Dent side quad cab build? Big block LS, 4L80E.
. So, how many miles total do you have on this truck? Does the other truck get driven at all any more? |

Full build thread on my last tow rig if you have a little time.. http://www.pirate4x4.com/forum/dodge...ummins-14.html Started with this... http://i1133.photobucket.com/albums/...ps05080607.jpg And this.. http://i1133.photobucket.com/albums/...B4F4E-orig.jpg http://i1133.photobucket.com/albums/...CEF32-orig.jpg http://i1133.photobucket.com/albums/...ps82843a0a.jpg You get the idea....12 valve cummins, manual, 60 and 70, beadlocks and 37's flatbed cause I haul a lot of **** around. Built this and drove the crap out of it. Moab towing a trailer and back then loaded up the wife, trailer and pooch and drove about 7000 miles to homer alaska and back with it. I honestly never should have sold it, it was bad ass, not fast, but man was it bad ass. |
That's dope.

Love that build!!

I hate you.....:D

Heh, I am the same UN on pirate... used to be an admin, still mod a couple of forums.
Have a few 4x4s, MDT's and HDT's too... like this one: |
We knew you had it in you, Sean. I also know how you wind up telling yourself that a new truck will be (so much) better than a tractor-like 12-valve in so many ways, but then wind up looking back and deciding that a bulk investment in Dynamat and creative gearing would have been better. It's just the way we motorheads must roll . . .
Trying out a Corvette and a BMW 5-series has led me back to a 1963 Ranchero, in so many ways . . .:slingshot: On a side note, I miss the 1973 W200 I sold a few years ago (to get a stupid F250 p-stroke). It rode better than the F250 on its 37-inch Toyos. There's always next time . . . Dig the Pirate thread--I love that site! |
Thanks guys....I may have gone back to my 12 valve roots. Will know more tonight.
Been tinkering with the truck the last few weeks but also working a bunch. Started messing around with a better stereo setup in it a few weeks back. Trying to keep it super simple and clean, you can tell that is kind of how I roll by now I took the back corner pieces apart and cut some giant holes in them. I wanted a custom looking setup and have some interest in wood working and making some bucks. I built a male and female buck that I could put in my press and press my own speaker grilles to exactly fit the holes I cut without any mounts or screws to show. Kind of OEM looking. Took a couple tries but I got it to work out. http://i1133.photobucket.com/albums/...psbpovwp2d.jpg This started out as a flat sheet. http://i1133.photobucket.com/albums/...ps6kj6ka6j.jpg Hertz 6.5" rear mounted, grilled painted brown to match the seat brackets and harness bar as well.. http://i1133.photobucket.com/albums/...psqvay57qk.jpg Installed in the truck. http://i1133.photobucket.com/albums/...ps51hsiybg.jpg I went with the retrosound head unit, looks factory but performs really well. Bluetooth, a couple of aux inputs and about anything else under the sun. Sounds good. I have some 5" separates I am going to do in the kicks when I get some more motivation. http://i1133.photobucket.com/albums/...psgjxlqigz.jpg Got this guy and the harnesses installed as well. The seat is surprisingly comfortable and harnesses really hold you in there. http://i1133.photobucket.com/albums/...psawzd8rmf.jpg Went through and topped off all the fluids and did the nut and bolt go around on the truck last night. Clean it up and load up all my stuff tomorrow and hit the road. Take off here on Thursday morning headed for Vegas. Cross your fingers I make it there =) Sean |
Good luck Sean, enjoy!
|
Well, got everything loaded up and hit the road this morning. Weather has been nice for what seems like months. Weather apparently moved in last night so I got to deal with this for about 150 miles. There was a number of times I could not see anything in front of me, keep in mind, big ass truck camper in the bed, extended hitch trailer and the f100 behind me.
http://i1133.photobucket.com/albums/...pstejzjlxw.jpg But took the back roads the entire way and was rewarded with some awesome 2 lane roads for about 400 miles up through the Sierra Nevada mountains. http://i1133.photobucket.com/albums/...pso5krffhv.jpg Looks like I have to find a car wash I can spend $100 at when I get into town....I hate dirt, this is going to drive me bonkers. http://i1133.photobucket.com/albums/...psrqoik200.jpg This was outside of Susanville, I could live there. http://i1133.photobucket.com/albums/...pslbxgyaoa.jpg Also managed to get these designed and printed up at the last minute. Been using this as my shop tag for a while, figured I might as well give myself a name other than Hackster. http://i1133.photobucket.com/albums/...psjjiwsti3.jpg Maybe on the next one I can get it straight :-jammin So I am tucked away for the night here in Reno....well Sparks actually. Gonna hang out at the RV Park tonight and head out in the morning. |
Have fun Sean, looks like quite the adventure already.

Is that Nintendo font??

Vegas went ok. I need to work on my driving more than the truck to be totally honest. There were some brutally fast cars and very good drivers there. I held my own overall but did pretty poor on the AutoCross and Track Day portions. I finished 10th overall out of 23 in my class of GTV. Keep in mind most of these guys have been racing for years and years. The truck does well in the Design and Engineering portion of the event. 6th out of 23 is pretty good for a truck that has its original ****ty paint and some rust holes here and there. Some rediculous cars there as well. Dusold's camaro has 850HP on a full tube chassis...you can start to see I am a bit out of my league here, but still having fun. http://i1133.photobucket.com/albums/...psx0p18j9c.jpg Fresh Debut AMX was incredible. http://i1133.photobucket.com/albums/...psxmfvvrsr.jpg This was the unfortunate part of the weekend, he hit the wall about 75 or so. The car is worse in person but the driver was OK and that is all that really matters, he can build another car. http://i1133.photobucket.com/albums/...psjjc3fbwa.jpg http://i1133.photobucket.com/albums/...psq9toojmi.jpg Sitting in line waiting for the Speed Stop Challenge, you can see some killer cars I am lined up with. Pretty fun to even be able to hang with these guys in my old truck. http://i1133.photobucket.com/albums/...psmgaaodj8.jpg Our Road Rally took us down the main strip, it was brutal, hot and we were in bumper to bumper traffic for 2 hours. Cool as hell though to see all that stuff and from the seat of the truck. http://i1133.photobucket.com/albums/...psqcsaq1jo.jpg http://i1133.photobucket.com/albums/...pszwavufhj.jpg My buddy Martin has this killer wagon, it has a 535 hp 427 crate engine in it and hauls the mail!!! Well his 35 amp alternator, yes you read that right 35 amp would not keep up with the heat, the fans, lights and stuff in all that traffic and finally killed the battery. So we hung out here on the side of the road for a couple of hours until someone could bring us a battery and we could get Martin home safe. http://i1133.photobucket.com/albums/...psualntihy.jpg That is what this event is all about for me. Making new friends, getting some seat time and having fun, I dont think I will ever be right at the top but hope the more seat time I get the better I can place. This Holden was super cool, it looks like it is a real Holden brought in from Australia and sounded rowdy!! http://i1133.photobucket.com/albums/...psg3tdxov8.jpg Truck will have some good footage on streetcar challenge show in the next few season. http://i1133.photobucket.com/albums/...ps8pqtwigu.jpg Cool Pic. http://i1133.photobucket.com/albums/...psyp0mldqm.jpg Ordered some proper wheels for it when I got back. Just finished measuring them up and am going to get bigger tires this go around as well. 295/40/18 on an 11" wheel Messed around with the coilover setting for a few moments last night and stiffened it up in the front 3 clicks and will do the same for the rear. I need to swap the springs all the way around to stiffer rates and likely get a smaller rear sway bar. I have a track day all day Friday, should be fun, its at my "Home" track PIR. Sean |
