Morning all ... So I was fortunate enough to get invited to the PFAFF Porsche Obsidian / Black tie event that was held last night. And it was here that I came face to face with likely the most incredible car that I will ever lay eyes on .... The detail and craftsmanship is absolutely 2nd to none. If anyone has the chance to get up and close to a Singer DLS do it, and dont just glance at it ... look closely and you will be stunned at the detail.
My good friend Jimmy, the GM of PFAFF Reserve, and now the GM of PFAFF Porsche commissioned this car over 7 years ago, and what's insane is the fact that he / PFAFF laid down a decent (refundable) deposit for a car 'sight unseen' fully expecting that he would back out, but he said what the hell ... Cost $2 Million. Move ahead 2 years Jimmy see's a DLS in person and is completely blown away and now commits to the entire build. Fast forward another 5 years and the car is complete ... before it even lands in Toronto, the car is sold ... amount unknown, but what I can tell you is this. They are ONLY making about 75 or so DLS's, (no more) and on the open market one just sold for over $4,000,000.00 So I now ask myself the question ... If I had the $$ to buy one, would I ?? Absofu%^^$#lutly ... This is a drivers halo car, there is nothing out there that looks like it, drives like it or sounds like it. As I get older and I see so many cool, fast supercars at all these events I feel like I am numb to it all. Ya, there goes another Aventador, or another GT3 RS etc... But when you come face to face with a car like this it's like taking you back to your childhood and the 1st time you saw 'that car'... Its simply mesmerizing https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...d57d6910_b.jpgthumbnail_Screenshot 2023-09-23 at 7.35.23 AM by Steve Heck, on Flickr https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...3cf2ccc7_b.jpgthumbnail_Screenshot 2023-09-23 at 7.56.54 AM by Steve Heck, on Flickr |

With the exception of an F40 and a couple 959s I'll probably never see again -- and the elusive Chiron which started to show up after I left FL -- I don't generally get too excited about those cars. When anyone with deep enough pockets can walk into a dealership and buy one with relative ease, and there are relatively large numbers of them on the street... ehh. The poster car from my childhood I'll never be able to afford (to buy or maintain) is a Testarossa, and I'll shoot countless photos of one the rare times I see it. But what makes my heart skip a beat is the awesome cars brought back to life and made better than they ever were. Living vicariously through the people who are able to make this happen is exciting enough, and I very much appreciate the builds on this site, and the photos in threads like this. I remember my first few visits to this site seeing Roadster Shop's C1RS build thread, and I dug up a Robb Report scanned magazine ad for it as another "poster car". Not to single-out RS specifically, but I miss that they no longer post build threads here, to be able to read about the work done in addition to the galleries on their website. Being able to read about the progress, the work done, to keep cars on the road that have actual style -- and the performance to match -- is so cool. Same with talking to those same guys at the car shows about what they've done and how it was done, while my non-mechanical feeble brain soaks it all in. Sorry for rambling -- this Singer DLS looks amazing, and it'd be quite a treat to see in person! Since this is a photo thread... for anyone who's not familiar with the C1RS from years ago, here's that magazine ad. |
Steve,
Great post…thanks for sharing your thoughts (and pics) of that amazing car! Quote:

This SL, would LOVE to see this in person. https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...7ef8491b_b.jpg1221591863_190SLR4.jpg.075ba58bab1f115a4fcfca530ea 6cf7d by Steve Heck, on Flickr |

I think a lot of us get emotional about cars…especially when we get our credit card statements and see how much the old crustys and dustys cost us each month! :G-Dub: |

Steve i got to agree .. I saw a singer, pretty sure it was a dls ... white lol . It was one of the auto shows in Toronto a couple of yrs ago . Absolutely sex on wheels. The quarter window turned into a ram air for the air box , sounds weird but they made it beautiful

That black DLS is amazing! Glad you got to see it in person, Steve. That orange really pops against the black, wow!
What you all have described is similar to why I no longer care about power and really only focus on the design and for my person car of choice, my E39, the driving experience. That DLS and SL could have a 350/350 sbc for all I care. If they drive great and look great, that's all that matters to me any more. |
I have been fortunate and I seen a couple of the Singer DLS, Guntherworks and a few others. They are absolutely insane.
Way back in 2012/2013 I hung out a Rad Rides while they were assembling a Riddler car. Talk about being blown away. Each year the bar seems to get raised and somehow people keep raising it. I can't imagine what the next ten years are going to bring. ps I just going to back to my garage and finish my Patina car to drive out of the garage. |

Trey, funny enough the E39 M3 has been on my radar for the past year ... keeping a close eye out for a nice one Marty, have been thinking the same for some time, Since I started and finished my 69 Camaro around 2017, the level of design, creativity, finishes have just accelerated. It's both a great time to be an enthusiast, but also kinda scary ... are we nearing the end with the looming 'electrification' or are we staring down the barrel at a significant shift in tech. I just couldn't imagine building a hotrod/resto-mod that doesn't make any noise .... Cheers Steve |
I agree Steve.
I’m not really interested in an EV as I think most of them are well ugly or just not my style. It’s to bad they didn’t push the Hybrid as I may have considered one for my daily. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |
I'm not sure we'll see an end. I just think it will keep transitioning. I see sport trucks coming back pretty big to a large extent. Radwood seems to be gaining in popularity with period correct builds, too.
Regarding raising the bar. I ran into Bob Johnson a few years back now. He brought out a super clean and heavily detailed 55 Chevy to Caffeine & Octane that was of course gorgeous. The freaking engine was entirely smoothed out for crying out loud. I asked him about G-Force Cuda and Battle Axe and how they compare to today. He said those two cars don't hold a candle to what's being built now. It really is insane the level of craftsmanship that is going on. I can see electric power helping to draw attention to new areas previously not possible when dealing with an internal combustion engine. I think the sound and amazement of getting a mechanical wonder to work will be lost on many. Think about how many people are more impressed with the latest iPhone compared to any real, wind up watch/clock. No doubt the iPhone is impressive, but the watch blows my mind and keeps me enthralled more. |

I always thought GM messed up not putting the 71/72 rear bumper and lights on the 70 cars. Not that the square 70 lights looked bad. I just think the quad tail lights looks much better.
Dig the yellow lights on the GTO. Gives it a Euro flair. |
