Very very cool! I'm super happy for you! They did a great job with a quick turn around....no paint jail for this car!

Exactly Tony. Thats how it should be. Its should not take months to years to prime, sand and paint a car.

Thanks guys. Project was 17 weeks from drop off to pick up. Only real delay was the media blasting that took about 10 days, just becasue of the amount of filler on the car. 5 complete passes to get it back down to metal! It was actually a new project milestone for this shop. They said usually for a project this size, they would be 6-7 months minimum. It sped everything up for them when I had all the required parts ready to go, and had a plan for what I wanted. There really weren't any changes mid stream, and that helped a ton.

GregWeld 01-17-2011 08:26 AM

Glad you went with the right Garnet Red -- that color just looks so right on these cars!

Nice job all the way around.

Rybar 01-17-2011 11:46 AM

Paint came out Killer, I wasn't a huge fan of garnet red but I think it looks great on your car

uk68327 01-17-2011 12:28 PM

Love the color

Thanks! I wasn't too sure myself but it is growing on me. :)

After getting a bunch of NOS parts together, I finally got some time to get back on the car. Got the headliner, visors, sail panels, rear tray, etc back in today.

Thanks. No Dynamat....just original style.

You did a nice job on the head liner. How was it going in?

With these aftermarket headliners, they only give you about 1/2" extra on the front so it's a real tight squeeze to make it work. Turned out pretty good though....tight as a drum.

DIGI-TAILS 03-21-2011 09:36 AM

i cant wait to see it done!!!! very good progress!!!!

It looks great. Good job.

g356gear 03-28-2011 09:50 PM

Thanks everyone for the good feedback.

So I did something a little different with the front bumper. I used a spare steel core and brackets and welded the brackets up to the back of the bumper. This allowed the bumper bolts to be welded in and grown down smooth. It then went to powder coat and then in for a coat of paint. Kind of gives the car the enduro bumper look with the steel strength and durability.

Looking good - random question - where you get the Lowes hood from?

awr68 03-29-2011 06:02 PM

Looking really nice! Great job on the bumper!

I have a few different used Nascar pieces from a site in North Carolina. They get used parts from different teams and sell them on their site....kind of like a broker.

g356gear 04-25-2011 09:41 PM

So its been a real battle trying to get anything OER or repo to fit even close to original. A few pieces I have been able to modify to make work but it takes lots of time for each piece. Progress has been frustratingly slow but it is happening.

NOS trunk weather seal...so much different from the rubber OER material....and the trunk actually closes with the NOS stuff. Got the jack and POSI decals installed as well. My original POSI decal was a little off level so I did it the same way.....adds a little character I think. :)

http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b2...r/100_4497.jpg

Original channels re-installed after a good cleaning and polishing ( lots of orange overspray as they were not removed when car was changed to orange color originally) and OER seals that fit quite well actually (the only thing so far)
http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b2...r/100_4498.jpghttp://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b2...r/100_4499.jpg

Original door handles and lock cylinders polished up. OER side mirror looks great but fits like *** and needs to be replaced.
http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b2...r/100_4500.jpg

A set of 20 year old Softseal door rubber seals that fit quite well. The OER ones were over 1/2" off on the mounting points and could not be modified to fit my original doors. Dash all cleaned up from all the body shop dust and re-assembled.
http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b2...r/100_4503.jpg

Quarter window seals modified to fit. Lower vent panels fit pretty good though.

Rybar 04-25-2011 10:10 PM

Nice, details like this make a big difference not alot of people will notice. Where did you get the trunk seal and door seals? My OER ones fit like crap like you described and I would like to replace them.

I got lucky on the trunk seal. My local Camaro guy had 1 set left in a bag in his back room....$120. I thought that was agood deal since I have seen sets go on Ebay for anywhere from $150-200 just for a single roll of trunk seal.

The door seals I had hanging around from back in 1989. They turned out to be in OK shape, just need a little silicon emulsion to bring them back. NOS door seals are going for anywhere from $1400-1800 on Ebay right now for a pair!!:wow:

waynieZ 04-26-2011 10:07 AM

Nice progress. Making all this stuff fit right is time consuming, but makes all the difference.

I agree totally. I am only doing this once and doing it right. It may take some extra cash and a few extra weeks of time, but in the scheme of things, I think the level of satisfaction at the end will be greater. :)

What do you mean? You don't like leaky trunks and window seals? Or having to slam the crap out of your doors?

DOOM 04-26-2011 04:15 PM

The aftermarket stuff is a total joke! I feel your pain!! I looked through your thread today and everything your shop had circled on your quarter panel is EXACTLY where mine are bad... I hope your done with the aftermarket junk...

What Wayne said. Making it fit perfect is key for keeping all that other hard work looking great. Keep up the great work.

g356gear 04-27-2011 08:09 AM

I managed to find a guy with a set of front door fuzzies (NOS) yesterday. Not cheap but man do they fit nice. No comparison in quality and they just sit better on the top of the door edge. I was wondering why there were 2 extra screw holes for the fuzzies...now I know. ;)

GregWeld 04-27-2011 08:10 PM

Isn't it amazing that we now think something made by Chevrolet for what was at the time - a 'cheap '69 Camaro' - would be considered high quality! Tells you what the repop stuff is like.... :_paranoid :D

g356gear 05-05-2011 10:11 PM

Finally got the glass back in the car over the last few nights....about 2- 2.5 hrs per side.

Hood stacks cleaned, polished, and re-installed
http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b2...r/100_4535.jpg
Rear spoiler installed. I found some excellent rubber grommets that I put on the studs that replace the original rubber goo and space the spoiler about 1/16 off the deck lid to prevent paint damage to the truck lid.
http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b2...r/100_4536.jpg
Dash totally cleaned and put back into the car.

Its coming out beautiful. The paint looks smooth as glass. Verey nice.

Very nice. Looks great!

g356gear 05-08-2011 12:51 PM

Thanks guys. It finally feels like it is progressing. Once the rest of the interior is back in, I know I am really close.

scottysimp7 05-08-2011 06:07 PM

I like what I see. Have fun with those windows. Sometimes those tracks are a real pain!

Leadfoot1 05-09-2011 07:10 AM

I hear ya on the rubber stuff.... I have some OER brand on the doors now (just finished putting it together) and they are coming off as we speak. I got some METRO one's to try (received them friday) I could not get the doors to pass the first locking step and shut all the way.

I heard that the METRO stuff is better, i sure do hope so!!! It sucks when you put all the best parts you can and it doesn't work the way it should because of poor engineering.... Man! i mean, we go on the moon and can't even get some stupid repro rubber parts right......

I have the doors all put up together now. I had the idea that they would settle down as i finish other stuff before getting the car out ( 4 year resto now coming to an end in a few weeks!!) but they are still too ''bulbous'' and i wont get the car out like this. So, i have to take a few steps back and take the doors down to install the new rubbers.

Hope they do their job!!

Nice car you have, i love the red,

Lead.
