I went to the historic races at PIR today and bumped into Sieg :sieg: We spent some time talking to the mechanic and driver of this nice 1968 Z28.
This car won it's class by almost a full lap running against mostly Corvettes and Mustangs. This car was way faster than the other cars...the driver was on the edge at all times. The mechanic told me the engine runs up over 9K. It had a 4:56 rear axle and he went 155 mph down the main straight. I do have a video clip of it running wide open that I will post up later. http://i1048.photobucket.com/albums/...ps473b4675.jpg http://i1048.photobucket.com/albums/...psbd380988.jpg http://i1048.photobucket.com/albums/...ps82db8c18.jpg http://i1048.photobucket.com/albums/...ps24868a52.jpg Dry sump tank in the trunk and a fuel cell... http://i1048.photobucket.com/albums/...psdae90126.jpg I thought of Dave (Flash68) when I saw these side pipes... very cool...This car sounded amazing going down the straight! http://i1048.photobucket.com/albums/...ps6fe19a34.jpg Jerico 4 speed transmission http://i1048.photobucket.com/albums/...ps33e1f7d9.jpg 302 pumped to the hilt. The driver said it had over 500HP but would not give us the actual number. 5 stage dry sump pump, step headers, titanium valves, Holley carb. http://i1048.photobucket.com/albums/...psaaf3abbf.jpg http://i1048.photobucket.com/albums/...ps8d5a4788.jpg I really liked this picture. http://i1048.photobucket.com/albums/...ps659c5900.jpg |

Just to put it into perspective of how fast this car was... he was running a 1 min 24 sec lap time. The average time for the rest of the guys in the class was low 1:30's. The car had 15" wheels and 10-3/4" diameter disc brakes and he was running 155 mph down the front and back straight. Very impressive. The driver was talking to a group of guys after the second race and said "you're not going fast when your hooked up, it's only when you feel like your driving on syrup that you know your going fast" :lateral: |

Seems the Talladega driver is out there on a Sunday drive. I think he has a few $$ into that recreation. I'm actually betting it's a FElephantrd with a Boss 429 in it. It was a mixed bag that year what motor they ran. Thanks for helping me distract everyone from complete fixation on the 67.:D That guy does deserve the attention for his driving efforts. |

Chevy's are like that..... |
The nice thing is with the lines a '69 Torino/Talladega has, you don't have to be Rad Rides to build a very distracting example.

Yesterday at the track I mentioned to Dale "after watching this, and with your motor, I have a funny feeling your tire expenses are going up" or something to that effect. :D |

Dude, I was spinning tires before you thought of it. :snapout:  |

That 67 sounds WICKED. The old boat is right where I'd expect it, the caboose. :D

Somehow, knowing how hard it is to source the parts to build that Talladega and that if it was an actual 69 NASCAR restoration it consists of some unobtainium parts and that the fit and finish in the pictures looks show queen quality, I don't think he was out there pushing it.:lmao: It still looks pretty sweet cruising around the track on a Sunday drive. Both Days ....... :trophy-1302: I've done my work here:topic:  |

That 67 camaro was awesome. I didn't get to see much of them race in the first heat but when they came back in the afternoon. No one could touch him. He lapped guys and made it look easy, and when he was pulling away at the chicane it's like he hit a power band like on a dirt bike and took off like a rocket.
Sorry I missed you Dale I forgot to check to see if you'd be there. I did meet up with Sieg. |

:popcorn2: Yeah the only way the Camaro could win is with the driver... mmm hhmmmm. :mock: |
I thought that for a car to be in the historic races it had to have race history dating back to when the would of had raced.
I didn't think it could be a recreation other than paint scheme. |

The guys pitted next to the 67 Camaro said he went home after winning Saturday because of the long drive home back to Canada. When I talked to the driver yesterday he said he would be back next year with slightly taller gears in the rear. I will be there again next year to watch for sure. Watching that guy drift around turn 12 with the engine screaming and going through the gears is now on my top ten coolest moments list.
Today... a 1965 or 66 Mustang, not sure... won the big bore race. The Mustang and a Corvette were bumper to bumper the whole race. The Corvette passed in the chicane near the end and then missed a gear... the Mustang got by and won the race. Fun day A few pics of the Torino... It was a very cool car...it said "LeeRoy Yarbourgh" on the roof. I did a google search and found this: Lonnie "LeeRoy" Yarbrough (September 17, 1938 – December 7, 1984) was a NASCAR racer. His best season was 1969 when he won seven races, tallied 21 finishes in the top-ten and earned $193,211 ($1,060,431.73 when inflation is taken into effect). During his entire career from 1960–1972, he competed in 198 races, scoring fourteen wins, 65 finishes in the top-five, 92 finishes in the top-ten, and ten pole positions. His racing number was 98. When asked about his passion, Yarbrough described racing as "what I call, my life." http://i1048.photobucket.com/albums/...ps0efe77b1.jpg http://i1048.photobucket.com/albums/...ps450b008c.jpg http://i1048.photobucket.com/albums/...ps105e2b4f.jpg http://i1048.photobucket.com/albums/...psfc0fc221.jpg Here is a pic of the dry sump tank inside the 98 car. I was checking out all the dry sump systems this weekend to see how they were set up with plumbing and vents. http://i1048.photobucket.com/albums/...ps5d98f440.jpg I think the cars at the PIR historic races are the real deal. :lateral: |
I feel like I really missed something! These cars are unbelievable! PIR is about an hour and half away for me. Hopefully next year. I'm putting it on my calendar.

Dale,
Great job on the info and the pics. I remember LeeRoy. |

As much Ford trash as I talk, I don't care what car/manufacturer is your favorite, that Torino kicks ass. Quote:

"Kunicki Dave Surrey BC Canada 1968 Chevrolet Camaro 5000cc 67 Red" Like Skip showed in the pics, 67 round parking lights, 68 rectangular shaped parking lights. Good eye! Sorry about that. :lateral: |
Good catch Charlie

It's car number 67 which I believe lead to the confusion. I'd just about guarantee Kunicki (owner/driver) would have a humorous explanation as to why it's a '68 with #67. If you get a chance to watch this car run do it! You'd really appreciate it. |
GW Cat-5 leaf spring install
Since installing my new 427” LS engine I have had some problems with my rear leaf springs wrapping and the car squatting under hard acceleration in the low gears. The leaf’s wrapped enough that I could feel a very slight drive-line vibration. I had to use wedges to change the pinion angle by 3 more degrees to eliminate the vibration problem. The car still handled good with the Hotchkis multi-leafs and rear sway bar set up… but I didn’t like the squat and the wrap.
My plan was to switch out the leaf springs and rear sway bar set up with a Quadra-link this winter. After getting some input from a couple guys on here, I decided to try the Global West Cat-5 road race leafs as a next step, rather than go to a Quadra-link. The GW leafs have spherical bearing mounts on both ends, and a full floating, heavy duty shackle mount. When I called Global West they said the Cat-5 leafs were rated to handle up to 700HP. I bought the Cat-5’s with the reverse eye mount, so I could get the car as low as possible and not have to use a large spacer between the leaf and axle. Cat-5 with reverse eye in the back and Hotchkis multi-leaf in front http://i1048.photobucket.com/albums/...ps2886ca20.jpg The GW leafs have a spherical bearing mount at both ends vs a rubber bushing. http://i1048.photobucket.com/albums/...psa1707f84.jpg http://i1048.photobucket.com/albums/...ps89b83d17.jpg These GW springs were expensive, but well made http://i1048.photobucket.com/albums/...ps7b53fd97.jpg Close up of the spherical bearing and spacer http://i1048.photobucket.com/albums/...pse5495dff.jpg Spherical bearing with spacer removed http://i1048.photobucket.com/albums/...pseb0f0c2a.jpg Here is a shot of the shackle and bushing set up with built in grease fitting http://i1048.photobucket.com/albums/...ps64c13aac.jpg The blue anodized aluminum sleeve presses into the rear sub frame, and the white delrin bushing slides inside. The bushing fits very precise and does not allow for lateral movement of the shackle and leaf spring. http://i1048.photobucket.com/albums/...psb3afd6ab.jpg Installing the leaf in the car http://i1048.photobucket.com/albums/...ps0fb9280b.jpg http://i1048.photobucket.com/albums/...ps0a7b9d52.jpg Here is a shot of the front spring mount with the reverse eye set up on the leaf spring http://i1048.photobucket.com/albums/...ps865b1feb.jpg I used a 3/4" thick spacer with a 3 degree angle between the leaf spring and axle to set the pinion angle http://i1048.photobucket.com/albums/...ps74ee7eb5.jpg Cat-5 leafs installed with wedge spacer http://i1048.photobucket.com/albums/...psc74badbf.jpg Spring swap completed! http://i1048.photobucket.com/albums/...psb0932cb3.jpg I have been driving the car with the new leafs for a couple of weeks now. Major improvement... the car does not squat on acceleration... hooks up much better... and feels way more stable in corners. I will be doing another track day in two weeks and I can't wait to try out the new set up. Thanks again on the good advice guys. |
