Nice work Chris.

Well...thanks to the help of some friends, my car is sitting at an undisclosed location (Jody' House) waiting to be picked up by the painter. Vega$69 was nice enough to loan me his car trailer to make the move possible and a few others helped me roll it down the driveway and get it loaded. Laurie and I headed out on what became a bit more of an adventure than we planned. We took the northern route not realizing just how tight, twisty and rolling the roads would be. I expected a few two lane roads, but it got kind of silly. We had plenty of funny looks from people while dragging the car through the mountains and of course plenty of thumbs ups.

http://www.smugmug.com/photos/i-8zNR...8zNRdZc-XL.jpg

We turned off the 95 and onto the 58. I didn't think the road would last like this for long and it didn't...it got smaller.

http://www.smugmug.com/photos/i-FSK3...FSK3gTt-XL.jpg

After a few miles we hung a left and this was the view that greeted us. The road just rolled and twisted for miles. It was stupid tight and I was down to 10-15 mph through all of it. We had to swing wide on nearly every turn so as to not drop a wheel or scrape the trailer on the rocks sticking out. There where spots where two cars couldn't pass even though it was two lanes. Absolutely no way of turning around. We joked about the road becoming just a grave covered cow trial and then we came to a one way pass through some rocks. It was so tight we probably couldn't have opened the doors on the truck.

http://www.smugmug.com/photos/i-7M6h...7M6hs4Z-XL.jpg

http://www.smugmug.com/photos/i-VQtZ...VQtZ2Mc-XL.jpg

Thankfully the road opened up and everything went smooth. It was a beautiful drive and one I would do again...only not towing anything. lol

We hit the road and beat feet for home Tuesday morning, this time taking the 99 south, across 58 and up the 15. It was only 50-ish miles longer, but all highway and it saved us nearly two hours. It was a great trip with zero issues. Wish we could have spent more time checking things out along the way there and back, but it was a small window for us and we needed to get home.

Hopefully the painter will be started on the car in a few weeks. Pretty excited and I have to admit nervous.

Flash68 01-21-2015 05:37 PM

Dang, that's a nice road trip... One step closer.... :headspin:

waynieZ 01-21-2015 09:48 PM

I guess that was the protouring trail on the way there. Glad it went well.

Congrats Curtis! Glad you had a safe trip.

It was a lot of fun, but after 1150 miles I was beat! I am :headspin: for sure. Excited and Nervous. Probably normal.

Felt like Pioneer Touring. I can't imagine blazing that trail and building the road.

Scenic route for sure, one that I would like to do again....without a trailer. :D

tones2SS 01-22-2015 04:46 PM

Glad you two made it safely. Definitely would have been better without the trailer, but you got it there, safe and sound.
Looking forward to the updates.

Good News/Bad News.

The Good News: After 5 months of storage the car is finally in the shop and starting the process. The car is blown apart and the glass is out. Small parts will hopefully be stripped this week and the body shortly after.

The Bad News: It came with pictures. :confused59: Kind of an odd spot to find rust. Not sure yet if this means replacing the Cowl Panel and Dash or what. It's going to be $$ that's for sure. Like everyone else, I had hopes that I'd get lucky with a rust free car. :lmao:

THEY ALL RUST THERE.....not unusual at all. There will be more.

Tell my girlfriend it's time for her to get that third full time job.

Greg...I'll be happy when she's just working full time again. Anything to get her out of the house.

It's not bad. Still...when you're all sleepy eyed, just waking up and sipping your morning cup of coffee, pictures like this get your attention pretty quick.

Spiffav8 09-10-2015 07:29 AM

Finally a little progress on the car and it looks like things will move forward steadily from here on out. Yeah right....

We just got the car back from the stripper. So much for a repaint. Like everyone else that's done this, I had hope that the body would be fairly solid and I was happy to see that the floors and trunk pan looked good. HOWEVER....there's some rust in some strange places and the drip rails are trashed. It can all be fixed with just a little more $$....right!

http://www.smugmug.com/photos/i-BPqH...-BPqHVxX-L.jpg

Probably not going to work as advertised.
http://www.smugmug.com/photos/i-c49F...-c49Frbj-L.jpg

The roof is pitted pretty bad. Thinking is that a blanket or something was stored on top of the car.
http://www.smugmug.com/photos/i-ngvx...-ngvx3Gb-L.jpg

camcojb 09-10-2015 07:32 AM

I would still consider that fairly solid.

Spiffav8 09-10-2015 07:35 AM

This was the big surprise for me. Never would have guessed this was lurking beneath the paint.

http://www.smugmug.com/photos/i-Sjd4...-Sjd4k7H-L.jpg

http://www.smugmug.com/photos/i-XW4M...-XW4MRhR-L.jpg

Always best to end things on a good note...right? Hopefully the body will catch up to this level before long.
http://www.smugmug.com/photos/i-gg3C...-gg3C8GF-L.jpg

I was just going to delete the front bumper and leave the holes....apparently that's not allowed. :twak:

Agreed. Just rusted in strange places compared to a lot of what we see. I can't wait to see it all smoothed out and purdy before paint.

Spiffav8 09-10-2015 07:50 AM

The plan is to smooth the firewall and tighten up a few areas on the body. I want to keep a somewhat stock/factory look, but just a bit nicer/cleaner/smoother.

To do that we will smooth the firewall, shave the door and trunk locks and remove a few seams. Nothing to crazy.....well for this crowd. The guys at work all look at me like I am insane.

Based on trunk inspections I'd bet money my car is very similar to this.......possibly worse. As it doesn't affect the way it drives, I'll just continue to play ostrich and consider the bondo traction ballast. :sieg:

You work??

Just a thought - be careful with that upper trunk panel seam. It's a flex area and I've seen success and failure there on painted cars.

awesome to see some updates, keep them coming.

ya, that's standard body shop stuff. That's why I always say, if the paint is nice leave it. You don't what to know whats under it.

After everything we've seen here it shouldn't surprise me. I suppose it does because of the level of work guys here do. We actually care about our cars. lol

Very true but most are not able to afford Roadster shop, Goolsby or Ironworks style metal work. I've seen $20-25K paint jobs with rough work like this under it before.

When I was a teenager -- I worked at Gateway Body and Fender (still in business) -- sweeping floors and stacking parts and occasionally putting on some headlight trim...

We got a 55/56/57 Thunderbird in ----- there were holes in it at some point -- so the previous repair used STEEL WOOL as a backer and mudded over that... well you know that the steel wool didn't last more than a month or two in Oregon's climate... OMG...

The invention of BONDO is what allows work like this to take place...

Curtis. What a bummer, sorry to to see that. I would never have imagined that to be under the paint. Especially the quarter as my understanding was it was painted a long time ago and nothing was showing that would indicate an issue like that. Glad your making some progress on it.

hersheys69z 09-10-2015 08:26 PM

You guys need to remember there was a time these cars were just cheap used cars that got bad gas mileage and people were not that worried about how they were fixed back then

They are all hiding something! It's not a big deal and I expected something. I crawled all over the car before buying it and after, I never saw a sign of anything being replaced. It will be fixed and looking good in no time.

That's true. Perhaps it's just me. I believe in doing things right the first time. Just the way I was taught, but they maybe this was someone learning or something. No biggie.

intocarss 09-12-2015 05:19 PM

Sorry to see you found some hidden issues. We all know it'll be done 110% the right way when you're done with it.

awr68 09-12-2015 09:06 PM

There are some real bondo artists. When I first striped my car 13 years ago one of the original fenders looked mint. Then I found out after getting it to bare metal that a 1/4 of the fender was filler! Never could tell with paint on it. You are correct in saying they all are hiding something....but they all can be fixed.

So I'm sitting here in Africa, and had plenty of time to read this entire thread. All caught up. :)

Not surprised about the windshield rust, luckily that is an easy/cheap fix on that area. My first red '69 project had the same issue. The hidden stuff beneath the paint seems awfully familiar, oh yeah my car was like that. Hahaha

I was kidding with my body guy a couple weeks ago, after having gone through this same thing as you are. I should have just bought a Dynacorn body to begin with. Doh!

Looking forward to the updates. If that were my car, I'd keep it white. Very few clean bright white (not Dover white) Camaros out there.

There was also steel (not aluminum) pepsi can used on the quarter panels. I bought mine out of a barn in 1983, but I always wondered what was under the quarter panels. I never took any photos of the quarter panels, but you will find all sort things under paint. My 67 RS Camaro is probably the longest build on Lateral-g.net, but it is at Sled Alley now. If you plan to eliminate the front bumper, then you might want to remove the fender extensions seam. Depends if your shop can do it in lead, but mine is weld solid and smoothed in lead. I had to keep the front bumper, but it is due to the state front license plate laws. I will post a thread of it soon.
