Ron Francis sells these with a harness if I recall... Maybe AAW does too?

steve...

Can you not run a couple of u-joints and route your steering shaft around the header instead of moving the tube and recoating?

Your car is looking good! Looks like you are going to drive yours first

Nope, adding a u-joint won't work. I would need to add a heim pivot joint that would have to be attached (welded) to the frame.. no no on that.

The modified headers fit perfectly and the steering hooks right up. Next week we just have to wire it, fuel it, water it and fire it up. :)

looks awesome steve, you got a semi yet or what?

Steve68 09-01-2006 07:58 PM

Steve, can you tell me where you got the powersteering pully, of course mines cracked, ans whats it made of, Thanks

Payton King 09-05-2006 06:41 AM

what are you doing for power steering lines?

The rack has a 9/16 and 5/8 SAE thread. Are you going to build your own lines or are you going to get the kit from DSE?

I am working on that portion of my project this week so I will let you know what I am dong...just curious on what you are.

Also, what size injectors and brand did you go with?

I got it from a place called TURN ONE.. I think he is in Michigan and Jeff builds race car parts and steering systems. Nice guy. I don't have his number with me, but I will look for it. Cost was $50 and it comes coated in a grey hardcoat. Oh, this one is for f-body PS pumps.

Making my own. I used a factory hard line for the high pressue out so the braided part will be pretty short;

Ended up using FAST 36lb injectors. The shorter LS2 32lb'ers were just a PITA to run with the FAST intake and rails (they are working on an adaptor kit which should make it easier)

Steve68 09-05-2006 10:23 AM

Thanks on the PS pully info, I have a F body LS1 in my car, I think my pump fell on the floor and cracked the pully, that one looks killer!

Whens the front end sheet metal install??

Long day today.. There's a price to pay for trying to have what you want. lol

I wanted to run the f-body LS1 pulley system since I feel it's very compact and has a nice clean look. Instead of the alternator being mounted way high it's down low and tight to the block. I just like how it looks. On my '69 with a regular gear box it was no problem. However with the power rack/pinion it hit the upper hard line. The problem was that he line make a big looping bend and that bend was hitting the back of the alternator.

I cut the tubing so I could use the section with the flare and then drilled and tapped the nut and added a ninety fitting that had a #6 AN on one end. I then had a #6 male welded to the other end of the tubing. This allowed me to get rid of the loop and use a short braided line to give the alternator the needed clearance. As luck would have it the post on the back of the alt perfectly lined up with and hit the new fitting (couldn't have engineered to hit more exactly.. lol). I took apart the alternator and we made a shorter stud that now gives me a wopping 1/4-inch clearance.

Everything fits very tightly, which looks sweet but is a PITA to get right.

Tomorrow the Camaro goes on the rack so we can plumb the fuel lines, secure the tranny, install the driveshaft and we will also run the wiring. The car needs to be done next Tuesday so it can go back to the body shop for the front end re-installation.

Here's the modified steering line:

Nice! It's the details like that that define the craftmanship in a build.

worked you ass off I bet!

I tried the same thing and decided that it was too much work, good for you. I moved my alternator to the front of the head on the passenger side. I guess you would like to keep the stock routing for maybe a...blower?

Hmmm a blower.. that would be nice :)

I just like OEM stuff.. it's proven and easy to fix down the line.

Update: engine is wired. Damn, the Speartech harness was almost too easy to install. everything was the right length and it all just plugged in. Sweet.. Today we finish the fuel system and install the radiator.

XcYZ 09-12-2006 07:35 AM

That's a killer picture, Steve.

syborg tt 09-12-2006 07:43 AM

Steve,

What color is your manifold ?? is it Powder or Paint

Payton King 09-12-2006 07:56 AM

Where did you get the elbow on the throttle body?

How is the header fitment now?

Ok, that's not even fair... you should have cut off a few wires just to make it interesting... :D

Looking great, BTW!!

Perfect.. working out the crossmember issue and we should be good to go. The headers are a tight fit but they do. Just make sure you mask off, pad and otherwise protect stuff.. it's easy to scratch stuff up.

It's a paint FAST 90 intake.. it's Nissan Silverstone Silver (WV2).. the same paint I used for the stripes on my blue '69.

I was worried about the wires.. anyone that knows these modern engines knows what a birds nest it can be. The speartech harness was very clean and while it's not wired like a showcar with every wire dress and placed just so it still looks very clean. the main harnesses tucked in nice between the Katech coil racks and the FAST fuel rails.

Installed the AFCO radiator, catch can and relay. Needed fittings so we got sorta stuck on the fuel system. Soooooo close :)

This was the hardest fitting so far.. what a PITA..

71Nova 09-12-2006 10:49 PM

How exciting!! It's getting so close to being done!! Man I bet you cant wait to drive her!!

Steve1968LS2 10-25-2006 05:24 PM

So close.. fender are ON.. :woot:

Just need the valances, hood and to figure out the front wheels :D

Won't be toooooo long now..

Need to have it assembled by the 9th for a "paint booth" cover photo shoot..

zbugger 10-25-2006 05:34 PM

Looks good Steve. But just imagine how that would look with a black engine compartment. The damn thing would look like a jewel in there. You know I'm never gonna quit bugging you about that, right?

You're right.. the next black car I build is getting a black engine bay!!

Actually, I think I will do the Fairlane's bay in black ;)

Modern engines look better in a matched bay. Now is when someone will post a pic of Fuel to prove me wrong..

Hmmm.. you're name is zBUGGER, so yes.. I know you won't quit bugging me about it..

71Nova 10-25-2006 10:01 PM

Personally I like the engine compartment color matched the way it is. I was thinking the radiator support should be painted to match as well, but black might look better threw the grill. I would need to see the radiator support painted both ways to know which I like better. She's coming along and looking great!

Steve are you going to keep the cowl ind hood or change it?

+1, so I guess the whole "streetfighter" idea blew right out the window along with the budget  sorry Steve, streetfighters don't have color cordinated suspension links, frames and springs :D Really though it looks killer! I'm gonna do my inner fender wells body color too, can't stop the bling now I already got sucked in a long time ago :_paranoid . You must be really anxious now that its this far along. BTW did we hit post #300 yet? :hail:

Not quite genius. The engine compartment might be black too, but it's not gloss like the exterior. That alone makes a difference, and yes, I think the engine stands out better in there.

There was an engine in there?

What's funny is that the only reason car companies used to paint the bays black was because it was cheap.. the same reason they paint them body color today.

fatlife 10-26-2006 11:41 PM

are you telling us or trying to convince yourself?? :D :P it is what it is, it looks nice to me.

Ummm.. no :) -- you guys seem to more importance into the color of an engine bay then I do..

I do think it's funny when people use a black car with a black engine bay to make a point that black is better. It's like when the guy showed me a black car with a black vinyl roof to convince me to keep the white top on my blue car. lol

It is what is.. I like color matched engine bays and I'm not really fond of black. Put those together and my choice (to me) was a no brainer.

I have to go snap some pics today (i didn't take that one) since we had to trim the inner fenders to fit around the suspension. I thought that's sorta important for the story.

My Fairlane will be here Saturday.. woo hoo.. this WILL be together by the 9th. Light at the end of the tunnel

XcYZ 10-27-2006 07:30 AM

Of the photo shoot? It's just for a "paint and body" cover deal..

When she hits the road there will be video.

Oh, Here's a better shot.. I don't regret going body color :)
