I have been plugging away doing final details on the car. The closeout panel is now done and painted. Here it is just sitting on place, will probably be the last thing I bolt on after a good detailing of the entire car.

I had taken the time to make and paint the upper radiator hose, but then had these ugly PCV hose and radiator overflow hoses. So what's a paint guy to do? Make up step lines and paint detail them as well. Something I hadn't given thought to until this week when suddenly it hit me. Hah hour later they were both made, then painted at work. I fully expect to find more at some point, but I hope not. My plan for the last year was to attend the Boston World of Wheels as the cars debut. I have been working hard and am so close it isn;t funny. The car is ready, but I'm not sure I am. Set up is this coming Thursday, and thankfully I have awesome friends that have volunteered to get the car there and set it as well as my display up. Also repeat the same Sunday night to break it all down. This is two hours form my home, so its a lot to ask of friends.
My issue, is my health. I am having breathing/lung related issues for months now. I was just diagnosed with pneumonia for the third time in 3 months, and the fourth time since October! I have barely enough energy to walk from one end of my house to another without running out of breath. So, while I could get the car there, I'm not sure I could handle the show physically. I am so mentally bummed right now. I am going to give it until Monday afternoon before making the ultimate decision to pull out of the event, call the promotor and cancel hotel rooms. I am now on my 4th round of Prednisone and antibiotics since January 1st, and the 6th round since mid October! Doc doesn't seem to have a clue, and I am so sick and tired of being sick and tired. In between these bouts is when I have had time to do some of these small details, but this last week or so has been nearly impossible. It took me two hours just to bolt these panels in for a lack of energy. And yet I am normally a healthy gym going just turned 49 year old. Unreal. Well, here are the closeout panels fully installed. I'm very happy with the fit, finish and overall look of them. As cool as it would be to debut the car at the show your health is top priority. The show won't be very cool if you aren't in attendance to enjoy it. Maybe you need a second opinion since your doctor doesn't know what is going on. Forty nine isn't that old, take care of yourself buddy! |

With the help of great friends and the support of an awesome wife and two amazing daughters.... I made it to the show! For anyone that has been following along you know that I have been building towards and planning on getting this project done in time for its debut, for lack of a better term, at the Boston World of Wheels ISCA show. Through health issues that have been plaguing me for months, bad weather predictions and just an overall sense of blah. I did it. My wife kept pushing me to get the car there and reach my goal. She knows how hard I have worked and how long I have been planning on this show. To have missed it would have been heartbreaking. She is a trooper and fully supports all my car related interests. Thank heavens for that. When not feeling up to snuff and on the verge of not going, she kept pushing me, as well as 3 of my good friends that took time out of their lives and traveled the two hours to Boston to help me get in the show and set up the display. Great friends = Priceless. Now keep in mind, this car was not built to be a Show Car. It was built to drive, and drive it I will. But, being fresh I wanted to show it off. This may very well be the first and last indoor show it ever does. So, how did it go you ask? Well, I was absolutely blown away by the response the car got from spectators, participants and even the judges that took the time to check it out, ask questions and showed appreciation for what I did. At the end of the show and the awards ceremony I took home five different awards. First in class. Outstanding Custom. Outstanding Undercarriage. Outstanding Display. And the one I will forever cherish the most.... The Master Builder Award. This goes to the best car that was built with little to no outside help. Meaning, home built. I walked out of the awards ceremony stunned to say the least. The weather has finally changed form cold winter and snow, followed by lots of rain, into nice cruising weather. I now have almost 200 miles on the car and so far she is running great. I have a slight leak in the power steering line, and a little vibration in the driveline that needs to get figured out. But all in all for a complete nut and bolt built I am very happy with how things are going.
Yesterday I had John Jackson of Notstock Photography stop by and shoot my car. I wanted some killer photos of the car and I LOVE his style. this is just a sampling of what he did last night. He texted me these, waiting for the rest in an email. Wow, I come on here at least once a week to check in, but didn't realize until just now that I had not updated this thread since last June. Doesn't seem right to me, could have sworn I did, but I guess not.
So lots to update. Last year can only be described as an amazing year for me and the little blue homebuilt Maverick. As a reminder, I didn't build this car to be a "show car", but just a nice little driver. I will admit to getting carried away as most of us do, but I will still call it a driver and not a Show car. Having said that, I was shocked at the response it got everywhere I took it. As a quick reminder, my first ever outing with the car was at the 2018 Boston World of wheels ISCA indoor show. I was on rounds of Prednisone and dealing with pneumonia and frankly should not have been there. But with the best friends ever and the most supportive wife in the world, I got there and was able to show the car. Heather positively pushed me to get the last details done knowing how hard I wad worked towards the goal of showing it there first. She knew the disappointment of missing that would have been huge for me. Three friends all took a day off from their own lives, loaded my car in the trailer and my display, drove me to Boston (90 miles away) and set up the display and car for me. I then had another friend show up Sunday afternoon to help break it all down. When the dust settled that weekend the car was awarded five, yes five separate awards! 1st in class, Semi Hardtop Outstanding Custom Outstanding Undercarriage Outstanding Display And the most coveted, the Master Builder Award. This is given to the best vehicle in the show that is largely home built. https://i.hmjimg.com/images/2019/03/30/IMG_4772.md.jpg https://i.hmjimg.com/images/2018/03/26/IMG_4752.md.jpg Once the weather broke here in the northeast I was able to start driving it and getting the first few miles on it. Incredibly it has run very well with only a couple small things to go back and take care of! The next big show was the Goodguys Northeast event in Rhinebeck, NY. The car was selected for the Ford in a Ford pick as well as a Builders Choice Top Ten! A few weeks later I went to the Syracuse Nationals (9000 vehicles) and was selected as a Designer Dozen nomination (not winner) but did get selected as a Tucci Top 5 Builders Choice! Mind blown! Went to the NSRA Nats in Burlington, VT in September and was selected by Wings Callahan for his Wing's Award. Then in October I went down to Charlotte, NC for the Goodguys show at Charlotte Motor Speedway. That show was super fun, and I am bummed to hear it is no more. On Friday of the event I was selected for the Full Curve pick which came with a full photo shoot and a feature on their web site and a full one page in this months Goodguys Gazette. https://www.fuelcurve.com/1972-ford-maverick/ Then on Saturday the car was selected by Kyle Tucker from Detroit Speed for one of his Builder's Choice Top 10's!. This was then followed by a very cool 3 lap cruise around the track, that was fun! https://i.hmjimg.com/images/2018/12/04/IMG_5740.md.jpg With winter upon us I parked the car and concentrated on other things. In February I got back to it doing some detailing in preparation for a bucket list event for me, the Detroit Autorama! I had an amazing time and was absolutely blown away again by the response the car received as well as the parking spot they gave me up among all the Great 8 and Ridler contenders! After a long weekend I won both a 1st in class as well as an Outstanding Paint award! This indoor show is like no other. Much more laid back, but very cool with a very wide array of vehicles. Still very high end, but just doesn't have the prominence of say the Detroit Autorama or the AMBR show in Cali. But it was big with just over 1000 vehicles of all types entered. Here I took a second in class to an AMAZING 56 Ford Vicky. I bow to them, a beautiful car for sure. The floors and frame were sanded and buffed, I can't compete against that at all. Well folks.... It has been a long time and I guess an update is in order.
2020 came and went with a thud. And with it a lot of changes for me and my family. First off, PPG decided to close the training center that I was an instructor at. I can't put words to how much I LOVED that job. Everything else will be just a job after that one. At the end I had to shut the place down, and thus ended my career at PPG. I now work for a really great PPG distributor. With all the changes I made the decision to sell the Maverick! Long story short, I had been chasing the purchase of a specific 1951 Chevy truck that was down the street. It had sat for about 20 years, and for the last 10 or so I would stop every once in a while and chat up the old timer. Last summer he finally decided it was time. With only so much room and money though, something had to give. I decided I didn't want to deal with buyers and tire kickers. So I contacted RK Motors about consigning with them. I wanted more than they thought I could get. Tough part of building a unique toy is there isn't anything to base the value on. At the end they did a great job and were easy to deal with. The cars listing went live on a Friday at noon, and by noon Saturday it was under deposit! Funny thing, I don't even miss it. I had a blast with it, but I LOVE the build process and am right now in the middle of the truck and am having a ton of fun. |

Sorry to hear about the job change, I hope the new one has undiscovered upsides.
This is hands down one of the coolest Mavericks ever built. I thoroughly enjoyed watching the build. I’m sure I speak for everyone on here that we’d love to see your truck build if you’re able to post about it. I have a particular soft spot for the ‘47-54 3100s! Thanks for the update! |
