Thanks for posting pics of two cars that can give you so many bad ideas: that AMX and DuSold's Camaro. They're about enough to make you put the bed in front of the cab, then put a hood on the bed, turning it into a shoe with rear-weight bias. Bad ideas . . .

It sounds like you had a good time--you got to soak up the strip in style!

HeadInTheClouds 04-27-2016 05:28 PM

I read that whole truck build because I love those old Cummins trucks. I had a 2012 Cummins, and never had a problem with it. Recalls done on oil changes. In and out. Other than the steering one. You have some great builds, including this one. Thanks for sharing! Is the racing easier on the body?

I signed up for the Cascade Car club track day and instruction a week or so ago. Headed up to the class portion with Doug Bockman (sp). He put on a good class and went over a lot of the same stuff as the team continental class I took a few months ago. He went a little more in depth on car control and I took a good bit from his class.

We had 4-30 minute sessions on Friday at PIR, first two were in the rain. I was pretty bummed at first running in the rain but it turns out I got some really great car control lessons with the wet weather. Leaning how to keep the rear out without spinning it out, over correcting or lifting. After 60 minutes of in the rain I had a pretty good handle on getting around in the rain, it was slow, three cars went into the wall hard that day.

Third and Fourth sessions were in the dry and awesome. Truck worked well, track was fast, I picked up a lot about exit speed, getting on the gas faster. Slow in, Fast out is starting to mean something.

I tightened up the front coilovers 3 clicks and softened up the rear a couple and the truck was better, front end had a lot less dive and the truck was pretty balanced. I was able to get the rearend out on some faster corners but it was very predictable and controllable.

4th session I tracked down the fast car in the group a new z-28 and we did 6 or 7 laps around the track with me on his ass. He could pull me a little bit on the front straight but I could reel him in on the corners. We had a great time and passed our fair share of cars.

We talked after the session and he was impressed, could not believe I was able to hang with him the entire time.

I still need a lot more work, truck needs a little bit but I am getting better and more confident.

Onto a few pics I snapped.

Only on track action I got of it, hope to get some more.

Funny part was I loaded it up with a bunch of steel, tubing bender and a hydraulic ram today and did a bunch of running around.

Love this truck.

Congrats on all the progress made...with driver and truck.

Lookng at the stance on that thing is addictive...

SSLance 05-01-2016 06:05 AM

I did a couple of track sessions in the rain last weekend and learned a ton as well. Then in the semi dry session after I put what I learned to use and ti really showed. I loved driving the track in the wet, was giggling like a school girl when I came off track.

Curious if you made any adjustments to truck between the wet and dry session? I ran the exact same setup on both and seemed to be just fine.

GregWeld 05-01-2016 06:22 AM

Some of the best driving lessons I've received/learned from - was at DirtFish.... not only is it wet - it's gravel... you finally figure out how to control the car with just the loud pedal and begin to enjoy looking out the side windows! LOL

This truck is so kool - but YOU learning to drive it is way kooler!

DBasher 05-01-2016 12:46 PM

Nice job on the truck! It's looking better and better every time I see it, so basic, clean and just does what it's supposed to. The white with black wheels is just about my favorite color combo, diggin the canopy as well. :action-smiley-027:

I've got to schedule my track day at SIR (Actually Pacific but I'll never call it that) you should come up and show me how to drive.

It was nice meeting and talking to you at the Portland Transmission show.

And here I thought you were giving the auto hobby a break and going biking/hiking? Hope you have had time to work in a few here and there.
But I'm glad you picked it back up. I came to this site (from Tbricks) following the other Ford. Now this one. Well done! Really cool truck!

ps got the Volvo running! Finally!

hackster 05-24-2016 07:26 AM

Nonhog....that is awesome about the Volvo. Its about time =)

Thanks everyone else for the comments. I ran the setup three clicks softer in the rain and it seemed to really help out all around letting the truck move before it just broke loose.

Have gotten the truck out to two track days in the past few weeks. Last one was Friday night at the SCCA Tracks Night in America. We had Rain all week, then Friday was overcast and dry, it was meant to be. Got in three sessions and the truck did very well, getting faster each time out so I am learning my way around a track finally.

After the first fast session there was a crowd of suprised onlookers checking the truck out when I got back to the Paddock. Lots of questions and thumbs up and more than a few suprised fellow car guys there on track with me.

There was one car that I just could not hang with and that was a new hellcat on new Toyo r888 tires. Car was damn fast. I held my own with everyone else out there though, worked my way around a handful of Subaru's, Sti's, BMW's, 2 CTSV's and a few others. The truck works very well.

Here are a couple of photos from the last two track days cause everyone likes pictures.

First time with the truck in the rain....I was not happy but learned a ton about car control, it was a blessing in disguise actually.

http://i1133.photobucket.com/albums/...psqrvyokk2.jpg

The Subaru behind me was very fun car to play with. It had a full STI swap in it and was pretty quick. I ended up getting around him but we had several laps of fun before hand.

http://i1133.photobucket.com/albums/...psodvbjywn.jpg

Just a couple of the old girl on track.

http://i1133.photobucket.com/albums/...ps6ncpk7sw.jpg

http://i1133.photobucket.com/albums/...psx4bk2uio.jpg

And then there was this guy. 2015 z28. Car is just plain bad ass. He could pull on me by a car or so down the front straight but I could reel him back in through the corners. We had some traffic and both made it around them and got in a good 7 or 8 laps of me pushing him around the corners and him dragging me down the straights it was very, very fun.

This photos was at the end of the longstraight away into turn 4 at PIR.

http://i1133.photobucket.com/albums/...psoyqohnoe.jpg

I dragged my friend Chris in his Dinan tuned 335i out with me this past friday and we had an absolute blast at the track. His car is quick....he was not expecting the truck to be as fast as it was at all.

http://i1133.photobucket.com/albums/...psuoo8goj3.jpg

http://i1133.photobucket.com/albums/...psr2cpzjf9.jpg

Getting ready to head out for a session.

http://i1133.photobucket.com/albums/...pseuyi8jd2.jpg

So how does the truck work. After 5 track days including two Optima weekends I think the truck works pretty well. Its not a full tilt race car, its still an old truck.

I am pushing it pretty hard and its taking it. I need to work on getting the right springs on it and stiffening up the sway bar on the front a bit. It has a little body roll in the corners but you dont feel it in the truck at all, just in photos. I would like it to be a little flatter into the corners though.

It turns extremely well and corner exits are very good, I actually make up a fair bit of time on corner exit speed, the power cones on fast and the truck dead hooks once its through the corner and settled.

I am getting too much heat in the front pads and glazing the pads and rotors so I am going to try some other brake pads this week and see if that helps. I am running AC Delco Ceramic pads for the c5 vette. I think I am going to try some Hawk pads now, not too sure what to go with as i am driving the truck, tracking it and autocrossing it all in close proximity to the other.

Ill try and do a better job of keeping the thread updated. Have not been working on much lately so not much to report other than using the old girl exactly like I built it to be used.

Perfect testament to a well built vehicle, being run hard, put away wet and taking it like a champ. Thanks for the update and keep the pics and updates coming. Love reading about others out thrashing on the cars (and trucks) they've built with their own hands.

Just fantastic Sean!!!

Give your brake question to Ron Sutton - I'll guarantee he'll have something that will help.

Ask Ron about the springs as well, if the 450's are needed let me know.....what are you at now? 450F/250R?
Looks good and I'm glad you're hooked!

Thanks Lance, the truck really has done very well. Not even the around the track stuff, just staying in one piece. I have to say coming from a love of the LS engine that this engine is pretty fantastic. It is very docile around town and has excellent driveability. Just the truck staying together, no leaks of anykind to speak of and its a great driver. Probably my personal favorite of all the cars I have built so far.

I plan on it. I am going to attend his class in Ohio before the Goodguys event in July, hoping to get some good info on setup, since I really know very little it should be fun =)

Will do. Yes, 450f/250r springs still. I know I need stiffer springs but love how it rides on the street. Starts to blend the line between street car and track car. Maybe stiffer springs and soften up the coilovers on the street?

Went and picked up the KTM from my buddies house the other night in the f100. Whats nice is you dont really need a ramp to get it in or out :confused59:

Shooting for autocross out in the gorge on Saturday.

See if I can get the brakes all cleaned up again, they are glazing over after a track day.

Too "unglaze" those -- you're going to probably have to have .005 turned off of them - or more if they're warped from your track day.

You won't be able to drive them "clean".

After the last track day a friend told me to hit the rotors with red scotch brite and it worked very well. I got the bite back that I was missing. I also hit the pads with some 220 grit stuck to a flat board and it worked very well.

Pretty sure I have the wrong pads on the truck, need to get that sorted out soon.

I read that the glazing is caused by getting the pad too hot for too many cycles, is that correct?

You're info is right on! And yes - you can deglaze the pads with some 80 grit -- and "rough up" the rotor..... but obviously that's real stop gap.

Brake pad glazing is caused when the brake pad friction material is overheated.
This results in crystallized friction material on the pad surface and the brake disc.
Typical symptoms of glazed brake pads include: Poor stopping performance, vibration or brake judder, and cracks or fissures in the brake pad material.
Pad glazing is typically caused by operating the brake pads at a temperature above the specified temperature range of the friction material or not properly following the 'Bedding-in' instructions for the brake pads. Always follow the manufacturers brake pad bedding-in instructions and use a brake pad that has a temperature range that is sufficient for its intended use.

In prep for getting ready to autocross this weekend I pulled the front brakes apart again and found the pads still had plenty of meat on them but were severely glazed over and one had some pretty good cracks and even a spot that looked like it was going to break out of the middle of the pad on one.

I scuffed the rotor and put in a set of new pads (They were the only ones I had and a backup I kept in my tool box).

Holy crap, I did not know how bad those other pads were until I went for a spin to bed in the new pads. Brakes are back.

Going to get through this weekend, see how it does and order up some proper pads for it next week.

Truck and trailer are all loaded up and ready to headout first thing in the morning.

Hope you all have a good holiday weekend.

Thanks Greg,

Truck did great Saturday and I had a really good time. It was just a fun run but they were timed and the ORPCA posted up some results. Truck was fastest in its class of Non porsche RWD street tire. I was happy with that. The fastest cars out there were really fast, some of those guys are all about autocross all the time.

69 cars, an I was in the top 20 or so with the loose results.

I have a few things I need to work on. Driving the truck harder for one. Stiffer springs for another. Its going to get more body roll when the tires get bigger so it needs more spring. Going to order those tomorrow.

Looking forward to working on the truck again soon. Been working on house projects the past few weeks....wife is happy about that though :snapout:

Ill see if I can post some pics of the weekend up.

Thanks for the support.

Sean,

Nice truck, I saw it at the wet track day. Never had a chance to say hi but the truck looks great in person.

You might try bigger sway bars to control the body roll. Too stiff on springs can also hurt your track speeds.

Good to hear of another Oregonian on here Dan....seems to be few and far between. That wet track day was way more fun than I thought it would be and I learned a lot about car control.

You are the second person to mention the sway bar, then the third person mentioned it last night :thankyou: Basher

I have an ADDCO front sway bar on the other pickup so I ordered one up for this turd last night. I think it will be here before the next track day.

Sorry for the lack of progress here....not much going on in the shop right now, its house projects the last month or so but the house looks pretty awesome.

Thanks for the advice,

Sean

I met Sean and Marty at SIR for an SCCA Track Night last Friday. I think they shocked a lot of the NW crowd, the two oldest rigs by a long shot. Watching this truck run, seeing the reaction of others and watching all the point byes is really a hoot! It's fun listening to people describe a rear view mirror full of Ford grill and once he's around, he's gone!

Nice work on the truck and the driving Sean!

I love stories like these from folks with pro touring rides! I can only imagine what comments and surprise Sean's truck inspires!

hackster 07-12-2016 07:23 AM

Thanks Guys!! The truck has been really fun and surprisingly fast. I am looking for a little more rear grip on corner entry and probably the need to add some kind of rollover protection here soon. Ordered the large front sway bar a month and a half ago and it is still not in stock.

Work on the truck has been at a standstill, its pretty normal being in the HVAC Service side of the world, I get pretty hammered with work when its either hot or cold out.

Wheels should be here soon as well.

Managed to get a few days off last week and head out to the Ron Sutton class in Colombus Ohio just before the big Goodguys event. To say Ron knows a lot is an understatement. The amount of information that guy covers is immense and I came away with a much better understanding than I went into the class with.

I certainly have a few things to work on now, Bigger Front sway bar, Adjustable height on the Panhard Bar at the rear axle mount is in need too.

Ron was a great guy and I enjoyed the class a ton.

Then there was the Goodguys show....which by the way was just an added bonus we had no idea how big of a show it was. We went from hotel parking lot to hotel parking lot, burnouts in the streets to the actual show. Vendors for days, autocross with all the big dogs in attendance was amazing. Danny Popp is a machine and that vette is pretty damn fast.

The cars were just over the top. Some more than others.

Here are a few pics I took while back there.

Ill preface this with I am not a first gen camaro guy, nice cars but eh. This might have been my favorite car all weekend. It had just the perfect balance of new touches with the old styling. Interior was just enough race car, engine bay was still the resemblance of the original. Not covered up with fancy paneling and perfect paint. Excellent Balance in my opinion. Cool Build Busack.

The stock style swaybar is still not available and that might be the best news you've gotten. What do you think about an adjustable 3 piece set up? Easier to change rates, adjustable arms for different tracks....did you learn nothing from Ron's class :action-smiley-027:

Let me know if you need MY friend Ron Sutton's number.

It also seems we've got similar tastes in cars from the above pictures, thanks for sharing.

Yeah, you are right.....I need to get under there and try and figure out what will work and what rate bar to start with. Might need to get the truck on some race scales and see what the corner weight is.

The stock crown vic bar fits very good and clears the inside of the 18x10 by 0 mm. I would need the new one to have some custom machined and bent arms to clear the wheel and tire combo with the new wheels.

Oh and FYI....18x11's on the front :walkingdog:

Should be here sometime next week. Tires are at the tire place waiting for me.

KILLING ME with suspense.

Sean

Ron talked about you and your car in the class... I felt special since I knew who you were and could relate from your build thread. Yeah...11's I was really having a tough time with tire choice for the wheels until I took Ron's class. He has a lot of experience and said that he would much rather have a car with the right size tire on it than a huge tire on a smaller rim. We talked more specifics in the class and I settled on 295/40 on the 11" rim. Looking at the tires this am, I am a little worried they might be stretched a bit but hope they are just right.

Thanks man appreciate the feedback. I had my suspicions so I tore the pan off and was quickly greeted by the cause of the noise. Thrust bearing was gone. I believe I have about .040 endplay on the crank shaft. It probably just needs some bearings and it will be good to go.

Well after a couple of months of waiting, these sexy bitches showed up at my work yesterday. A couple little issues with packaging from the builder ended up with three wheels not being perfect. Ill work with Jason on that front, not sure what to do.

He did the hidden valve stems on the wheels and although they are super cool just would not work so I picked up some flush mount valve stems to plug the holes and got to work drilling holes in the front lips on my brand new wheels... Yes you heard that right.

But lots of measuring and prep and they are drilled with some nice clean valve stems in there.

I went out on a limb with the color on these a little bit. I love brown, its such an elegant under utilized color on cars and with the tan/Beige color on the truck with the brown interior I thought it would work well. Jason nailed the color and finish on the wheels they are incredible.

Well, an update that is worthy of some pics for a change.

I decided on the Falkens. I know that they are not the best tire out there but for the truck size they are the best tire for me right now. Ordered these up a few weeks ago and got them mounted up this afternoon.

So with that, I got the other side done. Cut the lips on the rear openings and rolled them in as far as I could. I might need to pull the bedsides out just a touch to clear the tire at full bump, but it has a bit of room in there now.

I pulled the front fenders as far as I could at that point. It is very subtle and looks very clean and nice.

Here is what she looks like, first trip around the neighborhood.

All in all its been a ton of work to get them on there but I am super happy and the truck looks mean, just like I wanted it to.

Keep it clean and in one piece till Goodguys next weekend, then back to the track.

Keep on truckin!!!

You are building one hell of a truck. Nice job!

Chad-1stGen 07-21-2016 08:43 AM

what method did you use to pull the front fenders out? Truck looks great!

Thanks Chad.

First was working with the real sheetmetal, I folded the inside lips flat, then rolled them up and in as far as I could with a hammer and dolly. They are really thick metal and took a lot of work. Tried the fender roller with reasonable results but with the non round opening it was a pain in the ass.

Then I got it on the ground and went to work with the old piece of 2" and 1.5" metal DOM tubing (no seams) and I did not think it was going to do anything. Turns out that method worked suprisingly well to actually pull the fender out.

I bet it pulled the lip and fender out below the beltline about 3/4" or so. It worked far better than I thought it would have.

Nice build man - I missed this entire thread, lol.

Looking at this Holden - I think thats a Chevy SS that has been badge converted. It looks like the steering wheel is on the left hand side of the car.

I wondered about that.....damn cool car but was loud as all get out.

Thanks for the props, easy to miss with all the crazy cool builds going on here at Lat-G.

For those following along.....first time with the camper on the old 12 valve dually and it was night and day difference, half the power of the 14 but it handled the camper so much better than the 14. I was shocked. Truck did extremely well. Need a few things for it. Steering box needs replaced, and it desperately needs the 3k governor springs. Those are next on the list but I was very happy how the truck did with the camper, trailer and F100 in tow.

What a weekend.

Got up to the fairgrounds about noon on Friday and got the truck unloaded and the camper all setup, its just better on the dually.

We hit the show about 1 or so and met up with my old man there. I was surprised how many cars were there on a Friday. Got to meet some cool people there that day. It was hot out.

Few pics from the show on Friday.

We got done at Puyallup and headed out to the drags. I cruised out there with my dad, F100 did great in the hot weather and sitting in traffic, I was pretty happy.

Met up with Rushforth and a few of his buddies for some Karting time.. I had no idea that I would be sore afterwards. For being a pretty big fella, I was happy with mid pack, 8 of 15 guys. It was a blast. 2 fifteen minute sessions were enough though. If you are ever up there, check this place out, its totally worth it.

I met this chap at the track and talked with him for a while. Super cool old truck. It was an original short bed that someone used to tow with and was just cool. I talked with him a bunch over the weekend. Great guys.

Was an awesome first day up there. I walked a lot, was pretty tired and hot by the end of the day and was so busy having fun I had forgotten to eat or drink anything from about 1 or so on.
