I'll give you a shout tomorrow - I need to line up some scales for a day so I can send the shocks out while the car is being painted. Cheers, |
It's actually a '67.
I've been following the cc post on splitters and am comfortable with where we are now. It needs track testing to fine tune the extension (both front and back) and we may play with materials once we have a final track proven layout in hand. |
That car looks like it will be fun to take out. Not to change the topic but the CC site looks like its not worth the time to join.

hmm.. the best part about observation is that you might be a knowitall when it comes to splitters but its really embarrassing when you cant even identify the year of the car.. and i think we dont need this site to become another Corner Carvers.... i think im not the only one on that topic.. and they paid for that.. so they took it. ---------------------------------------------------------------- on a lighter note.. Reboot.. the splitter and front end look AWESOME!! |

As far as the other stuff (not directing this at you VT), if you want to debate the merits of someone elses forum please do it elsewhere. |
Well, the car is in the paint booth as we speak. It's been boarded for the fourth time and is getting it's final wet sand before paint. With any luck Chris will being laying down paint before the end of the week. I'll try to shoot some pictures today.
In the mean time though I guess I should post something before the thread gets completely sidetracked. Since the splitter pics most of the progress has been subtle and is not really photogenic. We have got most of the engine wired and are waiting for four sensors before we can call it done. Plug wires are built and in place, and the AC lines are out being crimped as we speak (type... whatever). The exhaust is at the coater and the driveshaft is on it's way. At the back of the car, we have the Optima battery in place as well as the Safecraft fire bottle: http://www.onelapcamaro.com/OLC_pics/trunk%20stuff.JPG At the front we are looking at some bumpstop alternatives (some are more mundane than others while some are bordering on exotic). No decisions there yet (packaging is tight) but we did a bit of work on the steering arm - baer tracker mounting. One of the difficulties with wider front wheels on the stock subframe (and maybe aftermarket ones as well?) is that when using something like the Baer Tracker tie rod end and bump steer spacers is that the tapered stud is quite long and can interfere with the inner/outer lip of the wheel on the inboard side. Our HREs have nearly a 6" backspacing and interference was definately an issue. The solution is a minor modification to the steering arm and the use of a 5/8" bolt rather than the tapered stud: http://www.onelapcamaro.com/OLC_pics...%20end%202.JPG Three things to note: (1) there are no any spacers for bump steer in place yet as the car hasn't been aligned at this point (2) a safety washer below the heim is a must and (3) ultimately the castle nut on the top will have a cotter pin in place. Plenty of clearance now: http://www.onelapcamaro.com/OLC_pics...20end%201a.JPG |
Also up front Chris had been working on aligning the front sheetmetal and hood for the final time so we brought out the billet hood latch that Matt at RFR had machined for us:
http://www.onelapcamaro.com/OLC_pics...dlatch%201.JPG We have changed the design slightly from this version but wanted to test fit the piece as was and make sure the the alignment and adjustment was there. http://www.onelapcamaro.com/OLC_pics...lled%20far.JPG The final installation will use Ring Brothers hardware but i think the piece really adds a nice touch, especially since we do not need the safety catch. http://www.onelapcamaro.com/OLC_pics...led%20near.JPG |
The new design is slightly more refined and matches some of the other billet bits that we have integrated under the hood:
http://www.onelapcamaro.com/OLC_pics...0Hoodlatch.jpg http://www.onelapcamaro.com/OLC_pics...dlatch%202.jpg It will use the DSE stud and maintains a locknut on the backside: http://www.onelapcamaro.com/OLC_pics...Hoodlatch3.jpg I'll post more pictures of this when it is back from the anodizer and installed but there is something that is cool about newly machined raw pieces. We are planning on doing a limited production run of these (and/or the original version) if there is any interest. |
For now it's back off to the shop so hopefully some more updates coming tonight.
Thanks everybody! |
The car is now in the booth and getting ready for paint. Chris spent the last couple of days realigning all of the sheetmetal and giving the car it's final boarding. He started on the first wet sanding (400 grit) today (he was on the drivers side roof when I took these) and should have it ready for paint by midweek if everything goes well.

James,
You are making great progress. The car/fab and design is just awesome. One of the badest builds imo. You must be pumped. Look forward to the painted pictures even though I am little jealous  |
sweet since the thread got off track again james will be posting more pic!!! lol
i love the color you chose, cant wait to see that bad boy in color!! james what color your planing on finishing the splitter/spoiler with? |
Quote:
I am debating that myself right now. My initial plan was to paint the spoiler grey and leave the splitter portion natural aluminum but we have now been considering painting the spoiler portion body color and either leaving the splitter natural or painting it grey. I think that decision will be made once the car is in color. I'll have to take some more pictures tonight and tomorrow... |
One last piece of business that we wanted to get to before paint was running the AC lines in the engine compartment. We tucked the Vintage Air bulkhead high under the passenger fender and although it was ideal for hiding the lines there, it really made getting them hooked up more of an exercise as a contortionist than a builder. Suprisingly they cooperated from the start and we were able to get all of the hoses run with a fraction of the cussing that I used during the original mock up.
We'll clean the hoses up a bit after paint but I think we were able to run them with minimal clutter. http://www.onelapcamaro.com/OLC_pics/AC%20lines.JPG |
Well, it's been two and half years since we started on the '67 and we are finally in the paint booth this weekend. Yesterday was dedicated to the last of the clean up after it's final wet sanding:
http://www.onelapcamaro.com/OLC_pics/wet%20sand%201.JPG http://www.onelapcamaro.com/OLC_pics/wet%20sand%202.JPG http://www.onelapcamaro.com/OLC_pics/wet%20sand%203.JPG http://www.onelapcamaro.com/OLC_pics/wet%20sand%204.JPG |
and we got the car masked for paint... unfortunately, as is usually the case, my camera battery died after the first couple of pieces:
http://www.onelapcamaro.com/OLC_pics/masking%201.JPG It's masked now and Chris just wanted to spend a bit more time on the hood (the carbon fiber has proven a challenge to get ready for paint) and give the trunk lid one final pass before starting the paint. Of course today is the hottest day of the year so he was thinking about starting a little later in the day to make the process a bit more bearable. |
James the car looks awesome and I can't wait to see some color on it. Get some fresh batteries for that camera!
:D |

Awesome picture Matt

A couple of final pictures of the car fully masked and ready for paint:
http://www.onelapcamaro.com/OLC_pics/mask%201.JPG http://www.onelapcamaro.com/OLC_pics/mask%202.jpg http://www.onelapcamaro.com/OLC_pics/mask%203.JPG |
Chris started painting this morning after a final day of masking and prepping yesterday. The day started off with 5 coats of base applied with all of the body parts in their proper location to minimize variations in the metallic and ensure consistency over the entire car.
http://www.onelapcamaro.com/OLC_pics...20base%201.JPG http://www.onelapcamaro.com/OLC_pics...20base%202.JPG |
With the base coats done the car was partially blown apart again, with the hood, trunk, header, and valance coming off and four coats of clear being laid down over the course of the afternoon.

With five passes of wet sanding and three rounds of polishing there is another 40 hours of work before we start reassembly. |
looks fantastic James....................

We got a couple of new bits and pieces from Matt at RFR while Chris was finishing with the wet sanding and polishing. The first part is our newly designed hood latch:
http://www.onelapcamaro.com/OLC_pics...dlatch%201.JPG http://www.onelapcamaro.com/OLC_pics...dlatch%202.JPG http://www.onelapcamaro.com/OLC_pics...dlatch%203.JPG http://www.onelapcamaro.com/OLC_pics...dlatch%204.JPG http://www.onelapcamaro.com/OLC_pics...dlatch%205.JPG |
Chris is nearly finished the wet sand and polish, with just over 50 hours into the body at this point. That includes five passes of wet sanding ending at 2500 grit and three round of polishing. With the body now unmasked we are working on the final assembly.

The power windows are in and the glass is in place. We are working on the wing windows now and hopefully have them rebuilt tomorrow. Then we'll start aligning the glass.

We also got the exhaust back from Top Gun today with the entire assembly ceramic coated and ready for installation tomorrow. We've got an awesome new electrical system coming this week which we'll get in next week - it is completely revolutionary and has some killer features.
