Project Intro: 68 Camaro "Cha Ching"
Looks stunning
So I’m sitting here on vacation and I jumped on tapatalk to kill some time while my family is still sleeping. To say I have a love for 67-68 Camaro’s is an under statement as the first car I ever owned was a 67 Camaro that I bought and put in storage immediately because I didn’t tell my parents as I was only 18. Somehow I clicked this thread again today and decided to start from the beginning. Reading your journey to this point was very touching and inspirational. Thank you for sharing you story and the build of this car. One day I would like to see the car in person maybe go for a ride and then buy you dinner. Someplace cheap as I have a daughter going to college next year. Ince again beautiful car and awesome story. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

Hey Marty - I appreciate the kind words and I'm certainly thankful that others find this thread inspirational...I can't think of any better compliment! Sounds like you were a renegade at 18...totally bold move to hide a 67 Camaro from your parents! I wanna hear more of that story:popcorn2: Hopefully one day, our paths will cross and you're definitely welcome to a ride! Lucky for you, I'm a cheap date! |

Here's some pics of the fire extinguisher mounted. Was gonna go with a 2.5lb unit until I realized it'd be way too big to fit where I wanted it so went for the 1.5lb'er instead.

Just a random car pic. Been driving it around town every chance I get to make sure if something happens, I'm at least close to home. It's proven to be quite reliable and although it's not been driven numerous miles at highway speeds, it does get pretty good gas mileage, despite some spirited revs! I even managed to set off a parked car alarm as I drove down the main strip at 30 mph in 3rd gear, much to the relief of my 13 year old who's been giving me grief for swapping out the 427 BB for the LS.
Went thru all my receipts the other day and made an Excel spread sheet of every part number, description, source, price and date...partly because I wanted to see what the total was at this point and partly because I wanted to have a comprehensive list of everything on the car. I had decided that I wanted another car to build so I made a trip to Memphis to look at a 68 Camaro shell with a clean title and VIN tag, or so I was told. Long story short, the car was pretty clean, however, the guy's shop had removed the VIN tag and put it on his aftermarket body. The cowl tag was still on the car and as the conversation unfolded, that's when it became apparent that the shop had swapped the VIN tag and so that deal went down the drain with a wasted trip...too bad, really, as the current body had a lot going for it and his mom had purchased the car new in 68, he was just unwilling to give up the VIN tag. On a happier note, I did get registered for the Hot Rod Power Tour today. Looking forward to it! |
Such a killer build!

Just stumbled across your build thread and read the entire thing this afternoon - amazing story, a great read and outstanding work! I’m working on a 63 Nova build myself (just started my build thread a few weeks ago), and our objectives are very similar. I’m definitely going to look into some of the parts that you’ve used - really like the Finch shifter and boot, the Recaros, and will also look into the custom harnesses you purchased. To this point, I’ve been considering the TMI Pro-Villain seats as I’ll likely use the new TMI molded door panels, but I may reconsider as those Recaros look so good. In any event, thanks for the great write up and the inspiration!

As far as the Recaros, if you go that route you won't be sorry. I bought mine from Northstar after having a fiasco with one of the primary vendors for Recaro on this site. They were great to deal with and got me my seats quick but you'd be wise to get them coming (especially at the pace you're moving) if you go that direction. Lead times are usually ugly but they're extremely comfy and worth the price tag IMO. Keep up the great work and keep the updates coming. Happy to be of assistance in any way I can! |

What kind of brake system did you go with? It doesn’t look like hydroboost or is don’t see the booster .... looks awesome and what pedals? Maybe I’m having a dumb moment.... Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |
I went with Baer Brakes for everything. I had struggled so long in the past trying to get good brakes so I opted to go with one manufacturer exclusively in an effort to minimize the risk of problems. My setup is a manual Baer Remaster master cylinder with 15/16" bore, 6P 14" front brakes and SS4 12" rear brakes. I'm using the stock pedals and the Remaster adjustable prop valve. I haven't dialed the bias in totally yet but the brakes are really good. I was gonna go power brakes but I've always had manual so figured I'd give it a try since I'd already bought the Remaster parts. I like the feedback I get from the manual brakes as well.

Ok so I am sane ! Thanks for the reply ... I went with the equivalent but Wilwood. I’m just trying to figure out what I want to do with the pedals. I did pick up a McLeod setup for the clutch. I’m using the stock clutch and pressure plate from GM since it’s the same one they use on the ZL1. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |
Gotcha. I ended up staying with the stock pedals and figured as long as I felt like I was able to re-bush/modify them for the clutch MC without having any issues then I'd give it a shot. Worst case, I'd have to upgrade them. So far so good.

Any videos of how the car is sounding ?

Ok, so got my magnetic numbers in for the car. Wanted magnets b/c I'm not sure I'd wanna leave them on consistently. I love the look of the "race dress" but I also like the subtle, clean look. I went with silver as I thought it'd complement the car nicely and got some extra numbers in the event someone else is already running my first combo.
For the next topic of discussion, I'd like to hear some feedback from the audience. My plan is to add some vinyl contingency decals to the car in black or silver. I'm personally kinda leaning towards the black vinyl as it goes with the whole subtle theme. The stripe on the car is black and I like the fact that only people looking closely ever see it. Having seen the silver numbers on the car, I'm also now thinking of going with that color. The decals will be tasteful, not over-done and all one solid color but I'm curious what you guys think...let me know. A buddy of mine has a computer program that he can add the decals to an uploaded pic of the car to help me see it before-hand so we'll see what it looks like either way. Thanks for the input! |

Duly noted on the black. I'm not so worried about paid sponsorships as they're likely not to happen anyway. I've considered the charcoal color as well. We'll see, I go back and forth on the whole idea anyway. Thanks!

Got the car tuned this week. I knew it ran rich but was smooth and strong. Ended up picking up another 80 rear wheel HP and I must say, Holy Crap! It's like another car. That thing pulls like a freight train:drive:
At the end of the day, I'm at 452hp and 426lb ft of torque at the rear wheels. Not the most powerful thing out there but definitely strong enough to cause trouble! I tried uploading video but no bueno... |

Ok, so here's a couple of videos I uploaded on YouTube of a couple of the dyno pulls... Let me know if the links don't work correctly.

Put all new glass in the car. Sourced it from Eckler's. All in all, everything fit well. I was dreading putting in the door and quarter windows but it actually went really smooth. Amazing what a difference glass can make!

So I ordered one of frankv11's cold air intake kits to take the place of the one I originally made for the car. The other one worked fine but needed a support brace and, most importantly, needed to be away from sucking hot air from behind the radiator. Frank's kit is really nice and he did a tremendous job getting my order turned around and out the door lightning fast. I wanted to have it in time to get it installed before HRPT so that obviously won't be a problem. Here's the initial mockup. Now I just need to get the tube pulled back out and painted before final assembly. This is one of the nicest kits I've seen for a first gen Camaro and well worth the money.
