So true, but the pic clearly shows you deeper in the turn. Just sayin' :D

That was 13 I believe. You come in hot off the interior straight, make 12 ok but gotta be careful to set yourself up for it. I f'd that one up more than once.

That will come in due time, best to worry about the things that really matter first and get those jitters out of the way. Congrats on getting her out on the track and getting some laps in Ron, it only gets better from here on.

Thanks Lance. One guy on this site has their priorities straight!

LOL! OK, lets compare the CG to apex.

I'm guessing we were running the same configuration.......awkward 180* right hander, onto the straight with the mini kink, the under the bridge into this quick right/left series.

Here's my vid for config confirmation: http://youtu.be/bSUA-No8CYU

Well I have been busy

Finally get back on the site and I see this. Where is the love and the "on site" updates from the track? Last time I checked the text train is alive and well.

Congrats! Big day for you. Looking forward to seeing you more on the track and less at the cruise in. LOL

Nice vid Scotty! You were running a slightly diff course, but 13 is the same corner:

I also checked the 'fast line' map and you nailed it way better than I did.

LOL, sorry Payton. There wasn't much time for the train.

I already ordered track pads for another outing. Now I've gotta find time to get in the garage and sort a growing punchlist!

You dog! That had to be good rush!

A typical lap had me hitting 160+ over the finish stripe, the rush for me was under braking as you had to scrub 60 mph on the banking to make the chicane on the pit-out section. That's where bikes are scary fun to me.

Get that thing prepped for Streets so you can get comfy with it!

Hey Ron...Any vids of the car at speed? Want to hear that thing scream...straights, turns...whatever! Maybe a burnout vid?? haha

Thanks man!

Ron in SoCal 10-27-2014 08:07 AM

Hey Dan,

No big track vid just yet. When I mount the GoPro outside the car the sound is awful. The camera is not rocking inside the case and my firmware is up to date. I called GP tech support and although cool guys, they were little help. I watched a bunch of vids on utube and it looks like this is a known/common problem.

The 3+ series can accept an external mic (after you mod the clear case or buy a the new perimeter case, no wonder the stock was rolling), but I think you can't run the mic outside the car for two reasons: 1 - the fluffy mic wind cover will never stay on at speed, and 2 - not sure tech would allow you to have a line running inside the car from the external camera? If 2 is an option I could clip the mic to the sun visor.

Once the mic arrives I'm gonna test mounting locations and see if there's room on the dash. If so, It'll pick up the driver's view and get in car engine sound. I don't have an a-pillar halo so no way to mount it there, and the seatbelt crossbar gives a good view of the cockpit but not really a good viewing angle for the track 'sense of speed' if that makes sense.

If anyone has any suggestions I'd love to hear it!

dontlifttoshift 10-27-2014 08:58 AM

Mount the mic in the trunk. No wind noise, just pretty exhaust sounds.

Hey Donny! So I mount the camera on the roof/sail panel or wherever the mic cable reaches and then run the cable inside the trunk. Not a bad ..

Hey Ron, I'm not sure what version GoPro you are using as I started on the last page of this thread but you can help a little with noise when mounting externally a couple of ways.

1) Pic a good location. Mounting on the roof above the windshield and on the quarter window of my car (with front window down) are the two worst places for sound at road course speeds. I've found that mounting almost anywhere along the side of the car to be much better with less wind turbulence.

2) If you have an older gopro like mine put a vacuum cap on the two button mounts (especially the forward facing one)

3) Use a button head screw instead of the long plastic thumb screws to mount the camera and attachments.

4) use the least amount of attachment links that you can.

Won't be perfect but it might help you some. Here is an example, still wind turbulence but won't make your ears bleed.

Ron in SoCal 10-27-2014 11:06 AM

Hey Chad - thanks for the tips! I'm using the 3+ Silver edition.

I'll try the quarter panel mount and see if it's any different. Just for giggles I tested it on the roof of my GF's bemmer after the firmware update and got the same (crappy) sound result.

Hey Ron,

I hope something works out for you. (I'm sure I'm not the only one waiting for for that vid ;-) It's funny how no one has come out with a direct solution for that same problem we all face. I would expect GP or any camera company that creates products specifically geared toward Motorsports, or any any related events, would have a solid tried and true solution by now.

From experience my buddies and I have found that attaching the mic to the rear bumper /rear valence seems to be one of the better locations. A close friend of mine first tried it at Buttonwillow and ran it for few laps with good results. I wonder if you could squeeze that by tech inspection on some of of the events you you attend. I would think that if the mic was attached as sturdy as anything else that it should be allowed. Logically it would be no different than say, a side view mirror... Right? At least, I personally, would argue that with a tech. Wait, do they make you take off side view mirrors? Haha.

Sieg 10-28-2014 06:36 AM

Ron - One thing I've noticed in the AMA Motocross series is none of the riders are using the waterproof case on their helmet mounted cameras. I'm guessing that's to improve audio performance though I haven't tried using the frame mount yet: http://shop.gopro.com/mounts/the-fra....html#/start=1

The skeleton case helps to some degree but I still think the only way to get halfway decent audio is utilizing a remote mic interior mounted.

You also might try performing another firmware upgrade as a form of reboot. I doubt the camera corrupts itself but........?

I was thinking about it, but no. I'm not bucking for an Optima invite this year and the only upside would be driving to the event. Since it's a new venue I have no idea if I can get it inside. In prior years I helped out with the camera crew and drove right in but this year the Mav crew is handling the duties so I get to actually watch the whole event.

As soon as the mic and adapter gets here I'll test different locations. There's gotta be a solution!

No more firmware updates. On your original suggestion I did that with no positive effect. Oh it gets worse...the firmware instructions on the website and linked youtube vid don't work for the 3+ series on up! The SD card is write protected when the camera is plugged directly into the computer. And I see they've updated their website now that I had to F with it for an hour. That was one of my questions during the tech call. Apparently they changed the way the micro SD card works and you need to put it in an adapter then into your PC to transfer files. Yeah, it'd help if they had publicized that somewhere??

Anyway Scotty I'm not buying another case. It's a mic issue and that's gonna be my fix one way or another. I am on strike with their $%^(*+ accessories.
