Dude, long road to get there isn't it? Looks like you are enjoying it which is very cool. Hope to have everyone attend an event soon. Chad told me about an event at the El Toro base on July 12. Going to go and hope to see you and some of the boys there.

Ron in SoCal 06-29-2015 07:11 PM

I would LOVE that Doug!!

Sonar Chief 06-29-2015 08:26 PM

Nice work there!

Ron ... finally get to reap the rewards for all the effort put into this car, that's cool!

Question ... I went thru your thread again and wondered how the SEM Hot Rod black is holding up on the firewall and the inner wheel wells?

Thanks,

Michael

Ron in SoCal 06-29-2015 09:12 PM

Hi Chief! Ancient history Sir...back in the old days they let you spray acrylic, non-water borne paint. The stuff sticks well and the satin sheen looks better than the current mix. When I figured that out I pulled a mulligan :)

What kinda killjoy conversations do I find going on over here? A guy breaks a valvespring or two and suddenly he's being slapped with an RPM limit. You're no fun Tim...... no fun......

So there's good runners.... and then there's Matt and Gregg. Now that's pretty funny! :poke:

So has Rob taken official credit yet for your high finish? Ya know, because he apparently repaired your fuel vent or something that one time awhile back? :action-smiley-027:

Nope, Robo wants nothing to do with us cone chasers. He did shame me into buying $400 worth of flaring tools to fix 'his fix.' Next step is a beach chair, a beer and an egg timer in my garage so he can tell me how I'm doing it wrong

No official results yet, but I think I came in fourth behind Jake R, and two non interior AutoX race cars and a tenth out of third. Not bad for this rookie. Props to Matt and Gregg for the coaching!

...and he didn't come to this one either!

Ron in SoCal 07-01-2015 09:11 AM

Thanks Marty! I finally figured out, a little overcast and getting the camera position low shows off the real world lines

I'm a little slow sometimes, I know :D

Chad-1stGen 07-01-2015 11:05 AM

Sounds like a great outing Ron! I tried to sign up after talking to Matt the weekend before but I was too slow and it sold out.

syborg tt 07-01-2015 02:16 PM

LOL - Way back in the Day PHR did a pretty cool "Tips" article on shooting your car. I couldn't find it but I did find the one from Hot Rod

Glad you're getting wheel time and the car is performing well, Ron. I need to find an event that will let me make that many runs. Only getting 3 maybe 4 runs in here in ATL area just isn't going to cut it for me. I'd rather just cruise in the mountains.

Greg from Aus 07-02-2015 05:30 AM

Awesome stuff Ron, great to see it getting used.:woot:

Track Junky 07-02-2015 07:02 AM

Watched the vid Ron. Appears your getting closer if not right on your shock settings. Good looking run.

Chad it's such a fun set up, but you gotta sign up quick! Casey is freakin' PRO at laying out a fun yet challenging course. Next date is 7-11 and 12. I'm kinda thinking I'll do that instead of SCCA. And then Streets on the 18th!

I hear you Trey. Between so many classes and rules and minimal laps, it's tough to get up for SCCA.

Thanks Gae! To be honest, the shocks are close but there's a bit more to go. I've been working on the wingnut (driver) mod and only adjusting tire pressure the last few outings. I'm about ready to do a little shock and swaybar tuning now.

The vid doesn't really capture the brutality of the car, at least not to my eye. It's so easy to overpower (and push or get loose) the tires or the corner and screw up the line. It took me all day to get that one almost mistake free line. Even then, I could've cut it closer to the cones in some corners. Also the final dash to the finish I'm in second and probably doing 70, so I need to take it easy on the last jog and then nail it. Guys like Hobaugh or Maier make it look easy!

Thanks Greg. Tough, frustrating, challenging and exhilarating sport. Seat time sucks, but 15 run days makes it tolerable :D

Get out there Bob.

I wonder how different the Pantera feels with the weight bias to the rear?

Panteracer 07-02-2015 06:39 PM

Dead pool

Pantera actually crosses well
But it took me a couple of years
to balance the car and that is on Dot
Road race tires

Don't like to cross it too much as
all the damn bondo etc in the engine
bay cracks along with a few other spots

200 tires I can get for it are to tall up
front and too short in the back
Messes the handling up

Bob

Every autocross run is like a qualifying lap on a track, just condensed... It takes WAY more effort on the driver's part to do it well than a lap around a track. Plus, in most cases you only get 3-4 tries at it to get it right...

Panteracer 07-02-2015 08:20 PM

I think Lance hit the nail on the head
Autocrossing to me is the most challenging
Very rare to get a run right
I did quite a bit years back and
even won some divisional and regionals
in Scca. Points etc finally burned me out
Now I just want to run for fun but at the same
time want to get better. Car still needs tweaks then
maybe the driver can play catchup

Also would like to travel to SoCal and run different events

Ultimate autocross was actually running the Virgina City Hillclimb
5.1 miles up a road at sometimes 125 mph They say it takes
4 years to learn the course

Your car is a beast Ron.
I thought the driver did pretty good too.
Really liked that course layout.

For us auto-x fencesitters, it may be that for some of us, we were scarred by seeing multiple Top 5 SMOTY contenders plodding around on tiny figure 8 courses during our formative pro-touring years.

:D

Awesome Jerr! Let me know when?

Went out to Camarillo this weekend. I really dig the venue - cool breeze and a high of 77*. Lots of great cars and people too!

Finally some good pics. Photo credit goes to Casey Cronin. Thanks for the pics and driver coaching Casey!

Car needs more tuning. New pads with more bite, balance bar adjustment, more air pressure in the tires and some shock adjustment. I'll get there one day!

The typical plan Bob is four - 3 run sessions and then 3 timed runs, plus fun runs on occasion. Friday test and tun days are typically a "bring an extra set of tires" deal cause you get so many runs and then Sat / Sun is dependent on the number of drivers. Never less then three - 3 run sessions plus the timed runs.

Let's stay in touch and we'll plan a couple of good days out there when you come down.
