You're one lucky man Tony!!! |

Good decision..... Pete I was really worried that you were gonna spend all that time effort and $$ only to have your work get compromised by the work Chris did. I would hate to see that happen.
|
Started stripping today, here's a few pics of the doors.

not only is Tony getting a new paint job but looks like Pete's is trimming some plastic weight off the car as well.
|
and here's some pics of the deck lid......

:wow: I cannot believe how thick the filler is in that car!! The door edge is staggering :faint: and of course the trunk lid.
Reminds me of this joke that a new housing contractor (pick one, Lennar, KB, whatever) was beaten nearly to death by a couple that showed up to check the progress on their home. When he woke up the cops asked him what they beat him with he couldn't describe what they used. After arresting the couple they determined the husband used a square and she used a level. Apparently if you beat the previous body guy to death with a body hammer and dolly he wouldn't know what hit him  |
Wow! Okay I'm not a body and fender type but that didn't look to good to me. Really glad you decided to strip the car!!! Keep at it, your doing awesome work!
|
|
The razor blade helps..... in some of the pix its hard to tell just how thick it is........damn.....
Tony......did the metal seem that bad? Where you expecting Chris to do alot of metal work before the filler work? Or did he just slap in on over pretty straight metal....which is even worse..... |
:faint:
|
pete/tony i think i have 2 extra lids here, both ok, no rust, maybe a ding or something small. let me know if u need it

Wow! I don't have a razor blade with me, but If I'm looking at that pic right, there is near 1/4" of filler? I'm speechless. A great story to follow. Hope to see the car in person someday. Keep up the good work for Tony!

Ned, the car had many new panels on it, so no I didn't expext to see much filler on the car. The doors were nice, so I have no idea what that's all about? He mentioned that the decklid wasn't fitting all that well and he didn't know how to fix it...looks like he finaly just built it up with plastic! I'm actually in a little bit of shock at the moment as I'm seeing these pics for the first time! I had no idea the car looked like that under the bad paint. Thank God Pete decided to strip the car!! Thanks again Pete!! |
Wow..If it walks like a duck it probably is a duck. Half ass one thing you are bound to half ass the rest. That was the main reason I brought up stripping the car a few weeks back. It wasn't challenging Pete as many thought, but generally people are pretty consistent. Bad or good. Pete...are you going to the Lateral G party?
|
Hey look at the bright side.............You had composite panels just like a Vette.......:willy: :willy: :willy: :willy: :willy:

This is a case of to much filler.....Just keep spreading till it feels good. There is no way it needed that much. I see fiberglass, plastic filler, poly putty, spray feather fill. I don't think there is anything else you can put on it. Tony's car has almost all new panels. It needs a little more metal work but not as much as the amount of filler it had on it. |
pete, let me get them out tomorrow, and we can meet or i am at nhms all next weekend for track day and time trials.

Pete...stupid questions here but I'm learning a lot.
What's up with that rough edge? Is that a sign of poor work? In the sanding of the fenders I noticed a lot of different colors. Is that different product being used? How much is normally on a good paint job? Thanks in advance for the education. |
The rough edge is were they welded to fix door gaps, very common with these cars and after market panels and some factory panels
The different colors are all different materials that were used. Each job is different ...but a good job...... not that much Maybe if you were doing an old 50 MERC in your backyard  |

Looking Good Pete
|
it looks like he skim coated the whole car ummmmmm errrrrrrr 2 or 3 times and forgot to block it between coats . good thing you decided to strip the car but she's lookin good now
|
pete nice work, let me know when you need the lid.
guys most high end cars get skim coated but his means 1/8 or under total thickness. |
recycle
Hey Pete the cars looking good now. To bad you couldn't reuse all that bondo dust, just add water, you wouldn't have to buy bondo for a year:rofl: . How is the sheet metal? The panels look pretty good. Thanks, Jon.
|
Pete...what do you guys use to strip a car like this? Sanding disk, stripping disks etc......
It looks pretty good under all the bondo.... From everything I've seen ALL the top cars get skim coated in bondo and then blocked down until there isnt much left... but theres a big differerence in refining the shape vs sculpting the car... |
