Bryce, love the garage setup. Simple, effective, and has the requisite stuff.

I need a bigger sway bar to reduce body roll. I think there is some daylight on the inside tire acclerating out of a turn.

Bryce 03-19-2013 12:44 PM

Found out I have some slop in my low friction ball joints. Too much slop for me, time for upgrades. I will be going to a sperical bering instead and have some roll center and camber gain adjustments. But this change will put out for GG del mar.

I cant wait to see the tech write-up for this one. Sounds interesting.

I think I like engineering and building more than I like driving. HAHA. Race four laps then take the car down for a month or more and do upgrades.

LOL... I here ya... I just finished getting the car back on the road, had a great Goodguys weekend, and now have a list 12 items long with 7 sub-items to be completed before Goodguys comes back in October. :bang:

Everyone likes car part porn!

And that should stiffen things up a little.

Now I am trying to get this ride height:

I have been sick for the last week, but I was still able to order parts.

http://media.motortopia.com/files/ca...Thumbnail1.jpg

These are aluminum hosing ball joints that will thread into my upper and lower control arms. This should give me a better, more precise pivot point. It also allows me to adjust my suspension. Add or remove shims from the LCA and raise/lower the car. Add or remove shims from the UCA and adjust camber gain. Also I can adjust roll center at the same time.

You engineers come up with the coolest stuff. Now where did you find that at?

Mocked up the sway bar with a very quick and efficient way to locate the bar and arms. looks hokey in pictures though.

Bryce,

I have been looking into a similar swaybar setup. Ground clearance is one of my goals. My plan is to hole saw a couple of holes through the frame and mount bar just in front of the crank pulley. The arms will be above the control arms. This will also allow me to move my strut rod mounts inboard further so I can get some additional steering angle with the 17x9s.

GrabberGT 04-07-2013 05:02 AM

I wimped out about going either of these routes. Thru the frame - I figured by the time you get the bar far enough forward to clear the pulley, the arms would be 2' long and in the way of the tires as the higher you go, the more tire you have to clear. Going below as Bryce is doing put my end-links to close to the ground. Im currently waiting for delivery of a custom bent adjustable piece from Addco.

Yes, the sway bar is low, but will not be a ground clearance issue. ITs the same height as the pan, the canton road race pan.

I thought about drilling a hole in the frame, I dont really like the idea. However since I have moved the radiator back 3" I do not have room between the radiator and crank pulley. So the only logical place on my car was as previously shown. I really havent cut up my car that much, basically still bolt on suspension. I want to keep it that way.

My endlinks will be closer to the ground, but not much closer than the rotor. so it shouldn't cause any problems, the arms are inboard of the strut rods so I wont lose any turning radius.

I cant wait to see your custom Addco bar. I talked to them at SEMA and they were not that interested.

Alright. My brain finally caught up to how the roll center adjustment is possible with these. Thats pretty cool. Any idea what the range of adjustment is for your car?

I think I have 3/4" adjustment upper and lower. So I havent done any geometry work too see the effect on RC or camber gain.

The brackets are finished, just need to order some aluminum rod ends and cut/drill the arms and my car will be back together.

I am trying to get it done by the 28th.

Bryce 04-23-2013 06:21 AM

The sway bar is in the car finally.

I cut the arms down.

http://media.motortopia.com/files/ca...Thumbnail1.jpg

My dad drilled them out to save some weight.

http://media.motortopia.com/files/ca...Thumbnail1.jpg

This sway bar is twice the stiffness of the old bar and 3 pounds lighter.

http://media.motortopia.com/files/ca...Thumbnail1.jpg

I am not sure if those rod ends will make it on the final install. I am getting some bind at full bump and full droop.

Now ever suspension and steering attachment point front and rear is a spherical bearing.

A little bit more clearancing of the outer shock tower support and the car will be going back together. SCCA this Sunday is still my target.

Balitic fabrication has some cool concial spacers that will help with the binding.

I placed a McMaster order last night for some high misalignment rod ends. Those should work just fine. Plus I wanted them this week and did not want to wait for a new company to order from.

Thanks for the supplier info. I have seen them on the web before.

You might could use a little more thread engagement as well. Especially if you start using that inner adjustment hole on the arm.

That was a test fit trying to get less bind. The longer was not much better. My plan is to quick release pin the arm attachment on and not adjust the link length.

Update:

New motor mounts.

http://media.motortopia.com/files/ca...Thumbnail1.jpg

http://media.motortopia.com/files/ca...Thumbnail1.jpg.

http://media.motortopia.com/files/ca...Thumbnail1.jpg

I re-made the side plates from aluminum. This took some weight off the front end and gave more adjustment.

Bryce 07-13-2013 10:46 PM

I spent the day dialing in the Falcon for the SCCA event next Sunday.

My front suspension is adjustable in every aspect and really allowed me to dial in the characteristics I will be trying this time.

I pulled in a little more caster and adjusted the suspension for more clearance with the inner fender. I also spent a lot of time measure my dynamic camber changes during turning. I now have 1 degree of negative camber gain at full steering angle. I ended up around 8.5 degree of caster and 2.5 degrees of negative camber. 8:1 manual steering is kinda tuff. Oh well I guess I will workout a little next week.

Tomorrow I will nut and bolt everything and the car will be ready for the 21st. See all the san diego guys out there!

Bryce 07-22-2013 01:16 PM

The falcon did really good yesterday. I finished 3rd in SU and 2nd in pro-touring. (.070 seconds behind rich in his 69 mustang).

The car felt great, all of the front end push was gone. The rear shocks were noticeable bad ( I knew there was no compression dampening at all). I was getting wheel hop on acceleration as the car would hit the bump on full compression then oscillate violently. Also the car was porpoiseing over the bumps. I think some fine tuning and new shocks and I will competitive.

I will post video and pics tonight.

Bryce 07-22-2013 09:36 PM

It was actually a lot of fun. The 8:1 steering with only 1.75 turns lock to lock keep the car pointed in the right direction.
