Looks to me like he might have been on the bridge??

I didn't see the start finish -- that's what happens when you're on the road (just got home).... I thought the video was shot from overhead and figured it was the back straight from the bridge....

Where'd ya shoot that from Dave??

PS -- Spent 90 minutes uploading a video to YouTube -- and when I got all done the azzwipes tell me they deleted it because it was too long!

Hey Greg, do you remember how you were taking turn one? I usually brake in a straight line then turn in gradually applying throttle pedal through the middle and out of turn one.
I know I could pick up at least 2 more seconds there just need to figure it out. If I could get passed the pucker factor I'm thinking I could trail brake in. I did the math and with a 25.6 tall tire and 3:42 gears at 6200 rpm I'm doing close to 140 mph before turn one. I'm hoping the adjustments to my alignment are going to help me next time out.

GregWeld 05-02-2012 06:46 PM

I personally LOVE turn one! Mach 2 down the straight - I brake just enough to cause some turn in and hit the first apex with the front tire on the curb and carry wide and on throttle to the far side of the track and dang near put the passenger front in the dirt there... then I come back a bit for the beginning of turn 2... and just let the speed scuff off there feathering the throttle so as not to scuff off too much... and I gradually turn in for the apex on the far side - I drop to third and get hard on the gas just for a bit - then a tap on the brakes and scuff off and start that off camber turn in for 3... the one turn I don't like!

I passed a couple guys in that short straight just before 3 and I can tell you that going deep there and to the far left is NOT the place to be! That's pucker territory!

I'm hauling ass down the main straight WOT.... so yeah - a buck 40 or so is probably about right.

This time I used up the entire memory card in the Contour GPS for Gwens runs... so I didn't have the track data for my runs. I switched to the Go Pro for that. Tried to post that video to YouTube but the bungholes said it was "too long" - so I'll have to find a way to edit it and then repost it.

Track Junky 05-02-2012 07:01 PM

Interesting.....I carry speed as far as I can down the straight and move far right at end of straight braking as late as possible before turning in which is probably why I'm uneasy through there. Hoping the alignment changes are going to help.
I signed up for July 1st NCRC T Hill event but dont think I can wait that long. NASA will be there May 19th and 20th and I may have to do that one as long as there running the bypass configuration because that is the config I started tuning with.

GregWeld 05-02-2012 08:10 PM

Charley might chime in here -- he's run that track a bazillion laps. I'm a complete newb.... but I do - like you - like to listen to how others take various turns. One of the guys there that is smokin' quick - as in sub 2's with The Cyclone (Kevin) was discussing his line with us...

Of course it's one thing to take his line - it's quite another to take his line at the speeds he's taking them! He also reminded me --- that I'm on 245's.... so "relatively" skinny tires. There was an early Mustang out there running 315's on the front and he was much faster. Not sure what else was on the car - but his tires were steam rollers compared to what Charley - Chet - and Pete and I are running on our "vintage" track cars. Charley's '66 is running drum rears!

Track Junky 05-02-2012 08:36 PM

I just got a message from the chief pre-grid steward that NASA will most likely be running bypass. We'll see how my latest changes will turn out.
Hopefully Charlie will chime in. Turn 1 and turn 9 is what I'll be working on. I dont use all of 9 and need to pick up my speed going in and comeing out of 9. I know your supposed to trail brake about in the middle of 8 and 9 in order to set up for 9.
I need to be in the 2:04's to be satisfied. That will mean knocking 3.5 seconds off of my current times.

GregWeld 05-02-2012 08:51 PM

I'm reposting a shortened video now to YouTube --- so give me an hour and I'll have it up.

Track Junky 05-02-2012 08:59 PM

I don't know how bikes compare but we were using as much track as possible to the right (crossing the pit exit line) to get the angle on the apex and drifting to the cushion on the exit, straight speeds sound similar in the 140's and turning in at 90-100 and on the gas through the apex. It's a scary fast turn in on a bike.

Just for comparison if there is any - My weak corners on the bikes were carrying good speed through 2, the off-chamber 3 due to the surface on the inside line, nailing 4 to get drive up to the Cyclone then braking hard enough and timing the turn in, exiting 5 tight enough to properly hit 6 which allows you to nail 7, lack of balls to pin it through 8 (berm phobia), braking into 10 due to elevation changes, 11 is testy technical, cutting 12 a given :woot: , and 14-15 with the seam was my weakest corner period, I was never statisfied with the amount of drive I obtained out of 15.

GregWeld 05-02-2012 09:53 PM

Okay --- #1 ---- The GoPro was upside-down so when I flipped the video it appears that I'm running the track in the wrong direction..... :D

#2 - Sorry for the squished bug guts.:wow:

But this will show you my line - not that it's worth anything.

Might scare Todd... so be forewarned buddy!

OK, no offense but you need to burn that video. Everything that was supposed to be a left was a right and vice versa. Too hard to watch for me. I thought I was bad with my GoPro. How to you manage to video upside down?

The gopro has an option to flip the filming video so you can mount the camera up side down..That sure is a nice looking track and your car sounds good Greg. I did like the OH SH*T moment over the riser.

It was the start/stop. I walked up some stairs off the side of that main building there and watched for awhile.

You have 2 options when you mount cam upside down (only way I've ever mounted mine).

1 -- If you are on the original firmware, you just have to edit the "rotation" in your video editer (I use MPEG Streamclip -- one of the recommended editors on their Support website page) and switch it to Flip.

2 -- Upgrade your firmware (also available at their Support webpage) and that allows you to select the upside down setting right on the camera. That upgrade also has the much needed One Touch feature. Now I find the GoPro is a lot easier to work with while you are geared up in your car.

fleet 05-03-2012 02:04 AM

That pony can gallop...nice work Greg.

Sieg 05-03-2012 06:01 AM

Nice work Greg! Very smooth driving and that motor sounds wonderful.

GregWeld 05-03-2012 06:30 AM

#1 - I agree -- watching the video makes my stomach flip flop just a bit - because in my mind I should be setting up for the turns the other way! A couple times I've said to myself - "get over! get over! You're on the wrong side of the track for this turn!"

#2 - I'm NOT a GoPro fan.... it has lousy set up functionality - nobody can remember all the BS you have to change or how to change it. I did the firmware upgrade - twice - still don't have the one touch and can't find the upside-down flipper.

#3 - The little Mutt is far better than the driver

#4 - Regarding the OShizzle pucker.... Try as I might - it's impossible to take turn 5 "at speed"... Maybe I should quit trying?!?!:wow: :D

I clocked many laps of various cars that were running green group.... my lap times were faster than many of them. BUT --- big butt --- they had more traffic than I did. The new Mustang Jack built (the original builder of my car) was running 2:08's -- and everyone said the 'bypass' was a 4 second difference - so he'd be running 2:04's

He has KILLER brakes -- HUGE tires (315's all around) -- is light (think carbon fiber roof and doors etc) -- the car is set up -- and the driver is experienced (sounds like a line from Jimi Hendricks) So if you get to 2:04 you are smokin' hot!!

One of the very experienced drivers and set up guys took Chets Mustang out (similar to Charley and my cars) - granted it's not as powerful as mine - and might not be set up as well etc (but it might be set up better? Who knows).... but think Mary Pozzi -- Kevin is going to wring out a time in it... and he was running 2:16's. So I was happy with my 2:10/2:12/2:14 laps

or you can keep trying and end up sliding across the track, sideways downhill through the dirt. Now that's REAL pucker factor. :wow: :faint:

It took me a lot repetitions, and carrying a copy of the instruction sheet to the track. The Hero2 menu is improved but still complex due to the amount of varibles packed into the small package.

Wow, impressive on two levels. One that track is amazing. and Two... you took down a big black ? Pantera or GT at 4:50. You were going so fast I couldn't tell. Loved your lines as you warmed up. Could tell you are getting pretty comfy with that yellow bee.

you know, maybe you should post this in the Button Willow smack talk. Might shut a few comments up. lol

Nice work and proud to see ya out on the track.

Thanks Brett!

I've learned not to go out on cold tires and be the busy bee... and first lap out is always on yellow. If you watch - I picked up the pace after the green dropped. If I could have posted the video in full -- I did pass the two cars that I was reeling in right there at the end. There's just something about chasing down a car ahead.... I don't know what it is - but I got it bad!

I'm letting the smack talk flow over there.... and keeping my mouth shut - thus keeping the expectations low.

Well it appears I did my math wrong. 2.5 seconds will get me into the 2:04's. Easily obtainable on a set of Hoosiers. I'm pretty sure with the changes I made this time around I should be able to do it on my 100 tread wear tires.

I hadn't touched my alignment in 6 years and the car was very neutral. When the alignment guys gave me the original figures after recently aligning my car I told them, "That cant be right" and blamed it on the new lower control arms and vette wheels with the spacers and changed from what I originally had to what someone had recommended. Obviously that didn't work.
I also raised my roll center....after remeasuring I found that I had the watts pivot about 1 1/2" to low.
We'll see on the 19th.

Don't you have a birthday party to go to or sumthin?!?! :D

It's really just more of the same - no drama - just runnin' 'em down... reel in whoever is ahead, catch 'em and then slide on by...

Have to say - this was my second time out - and being familiar with the car - and the track - made it far nicer to just get out there and log some laps. I kept hoping someone would come out and play that was faster so I could go to school on 'em but it didn't happen. I really don't know enough to know if my line is right - or if I could get away with deeper breaking etc - so it would be nice to have someone runnin' out front.

Next time we get Mark out here for an event at that track take a few laps with him in your car. Great teacher, very patient, and will show you the line. He's run several sessions at that track in that car.

Get the alignment specs and tuck them away just in case you need them some day. Its a good thing I saved my last alignment printout.
